Phase Transitions of Polymer Blends and Block Copolymer Melts in Thin Films

‘Intrinsic’ profiles and capillary waves at interfaces between coexisting phases in polymer blends
2001
Abstract Lateral fluctuations in the local position of the center of the interface between coexisting phases in unmixed polymer blends lead to a broadening of interfacial widths; comparing self-consistent field predictions for the ‘intrinsic’ profile to simulations (or experiments), this ‘capillary wave’ broadening needs consideration. This problem has been studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model for symmetrical polymer mixtures, both for free interfaces (between bulk phases) and for confined interfaces (in thin films between parallel walls). While the capillary wave predictions at large length scales are confirmed, the extraction of the ‘intrinsic’ profil…
Interfaces between coexisting phases of polymer mixtures: Comparison between Monte Carlo simulations and theoretical predictions
1997
Large scale Monte Carlo investigations of the interface between A-rich and B-rich phases of symmetric binary (AB) polymer mixtures are presented, using the bond fluctuation model of flexible chains with NA=NB=N=32 effective monomers. The temperature range studied, 0.144<T/Tc0.759, includes both the strong and the weak segregation limit. Interfacial free energy and interfacial structure are studied, and compared to predictions based on the selfconsistent field theory. Also the broadening of the interfacial width due to capillary waves is considered, and finite size effects due to the confinement of interfaces in thin films of polymer blends are discussed.
A missing member in the family of chalcogenophene-substituted 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine: 4′-(tellurophen-2-yl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine, its Ru(II) comple…
2019
Abstract The new terpyridine derivative 4’-(tellurophen-2-yl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine and its homoleptic Ru(II) complex have been prepared and characterized by different techniques (NMR, UV–Vis, mass spectrometry). Additionally, a thin polymer film was obtained through electrochemical oxidation and coupling of tellurophene moieties. The obtained organic coating showed very interesting electrochemical and electrochromic properties, thanks to its Ru(terpy)2 groups.
Characterization of poly(N-alkylanilines) by Raman spectroscopy
2007
Abstract Thin films of poly( N -alkylaniline) were synthesized in acidic aqueous solution and in mixtures of aqueous and organic solvents. The polymer films (alkyl = methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl) were characterized by Raman spectroscopy with the excitation wavelengths of 514.5, 632.8 and 780 nm. The main Raman bands have been characterized for the leucoemeraldine, emeraldine and pernigraniline oxidation states between −0.2 and 0.8 V (vs. Ag|AgCl). This fundamental study shows that the structure of the half-oxidized emeraldine form contains quinoid units, which supports the commonly accepted oxidation and reduction scheme of poly( N -alkylanilines).
Atomic force microscopy study of conducting polymer films near electrode's edge or grown on microband electrode
2013
Abstract Polypyrrole (PPy) films of different thicknesses (within the range from 200 nm to 2.5 μm) were electrodeposited on two types of inhomogeneous substrates, single band and double-band Pt electrodes. Topographic images of the polymer layers were obtained by means of ex situ large-scale AFM technique to demonstrate how the propagation rates of the film growth above the electrode (in the normal direction to the electrode surface) and along the insulating surface surrounding the single- or double-band electrodes (in the horizontal direction) change with the deposition charge. It is proved that variations in the film thickness over the double band electrodes and progressive changes of the…
Multilayer Thin Films by Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Hole- and Electron-Transport Polyelectrolytes: Optical and Electrochemical Properties
2006
In this paper, we pressent the synthesis of a series of p-type and n-type semicondnctring polyelectrolytes with triarylamine, oxadiazole, thiarliazole and triazine moictes. The synthesized polymeric hole and electrom iransport materials were examined optically and electrochemically using UV/Vis spectroscopy. PL spectroscopy and CV. Based on the optical and electrochemical data, each of the energy levels were calculated and all values suggested that the were promising hole-(p-type) or alectron=transprot (n-type) materials for devices. Moreover, the synthesized ionie polymers were suitable for LBL thin film deposition from ditute polymer solutions and the multilayers were fully characterized …
Poling Induced Mass Transport in Thin Polymer Films
2013
In this study we report investigation of the polymer film morphology modifications during their corona poling for fabrication of nonlinear optically (NLO) active materials. We demonstrate that at certain poling conditions surface and spatial inhomogeneities in the poled area of the sample appear. Densities of the inhomogeinities depend on the strength of the poling field, the sample temperature during the poling, and the prepoling conditions. Optimization of the poling conditions directed toward avoiding surface modifications enables us to increase the overall observable effective nonlinearity of the sample up to 10 times. To investigate, understand, and eventually explain the formation of …
Optical properties of different polymer thin films containing in situ synthesized Ag and Au nanoparticles
2009
Here we report on the in situ synthesis of Ag and Au nanoparticles inside several polymer matrixes by solid-state chemical reduction of a metallic salt. Poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI), poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), novolak, poly(4-vinylphenol) (P4VP), poly(4-vinylphenol)-co-(methyl methacrylate) (P4VP-co-MMA) and poly(styrene-co-allyl alcohol) (PS-co-AA) were able to reduce Ag(I) and Au(III) to the corresponding nanoparticles during the baking process. The nanoparticle diameters of Ag and Au were found to range from 2 to 25 nm. TEM also indicated a uniform distribution of nanoparticles embedded in the thin film. This approach is suitable for controlling t…
Symmetric naphthalenediimidequaterthiophenes for electropolymerized electrochromic thin films
2015
A new symmetric naphthalenediimidequaterthiophene (s-NDI2ODT4) was synthesized and exhibited the capability to electropolymerize alone or with EDOT affording polymers with controlled donor/acceptor monomer ratios. s-NDI2ODT4-EDOT-based copolymers showed low band gaps, wide optical absorption ranges extending to the near IR region, tuned electrical properties, thin-film surface morphology and hydrophilicity as well as high coloration efficiency in electrochromic devices.
