H-2, H-3(+) and the age of molecular clouds and prestellar cores

2012

Measuring the age of molecular clouds and prestellar cores is a difficult task that has not yet been successfully accomplished although the information is of paramount importance to help in understanding and discriminating between different formation scenarios. Most chemical clocks suffer from unknown initial conditions and are therefore difficult to use. We propose a new approach based on a subset of deuterium chemistry that takes place in the gas phase and for which initial conditions are relatively well known. It relies primarily on the conversion of H 3 + into H 2D + to initiate deuterium enrichment of the molecular gas. This conversion is controlled by the ortho/para ratio of H2 that i…

Electroweak baryogenesis from a dark sector

2017

Adding an extra singlet scalar $S$ to the Higgs sector can provide a barrier at tree level between a false vacuum with restored electroweak symmetry and the true one. This has been demonstrated to readily give a strong phase transition as required for electroweak baryogenesis. We show that with the addition of a fermionic dark matter particle $\chi$ coupling to $S$, a simple UV-complete model can realize successful electroweak baryogenesis. The dark matter gets a CP asymmetry that is transferred to the standard model through a $CP\ portal\ interaction$, which we take to be a coupling of $\chi$ to $\tau$ leptons and an inert Higgs doublet. The CP asymmetry induced in left-handed $\tau$ lepto…

What can gender tell us about the pre-retirement experiences of elite distance runners in Finland?: A thematic narrative analysis

2016

Abstract Objectives This study explores gendered experiences of the mastery stage in endurance runners' athletic careers in terms of (a) key themes in this period of life, (b) retirement decision-making and (c) changes in athletic and runner identities. Design and method Ten male and nine female athletes aged between 25 and 62 participated in individual interviews. The data were analyzed via thematic narrative analysis. Results and conclusion Gendered meanings permeate career decision-making and retirement patterns of Finnish runners. Female athletes reported many difficulties, including health problems, loneliness, societal pressure and lack of social support during the final years of thei…

Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) as a new technique to determine the ice nucleation capability of individual atmospheric aerosol par…

2007

Abstract Heterogeneous ice nucleation on synthetic silver iodide, natural kaolinite and montmorillonite particles via condensation, freezing and deposition modes was studied by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) in the temperature range of 250–270 K. By increasing the H2O pressure in the sample chamber at constant temperature, ice formation can be studied in situ and can be related to the chemical composition of the particles that can be determined simultaneously. For silver iodide and kaolinite, supersaturation values of first ice formation are in good agreement (1–2% absolute) with diffusion chamber experiments. For both substances, threshold temperatures for the condensati…

New particle-dependent parameterizations of heterogeneous freezing processes: sensitivity studies of convective clouds with an air parcel model

2015

Abstract. Based on the outcome of laboratory results, new particle-dependent parameterizations of heterogeneous freezing were derived and used to improve and extend a two-dimensional spectral microphysics scheme. They include (1) a particle-type-dependent parameterization of immersion freezing using the numbers of active sites per mass, (2) a particle-type and size-resolved parameterization of contact freezing, and (3) a particle-type-dependent description of deposition freezing. The modified microphysical scheme was embedded in an adiabatic air parcel model with entrainment. Sensitivity studies were performed to simulate convective situations and to investigate the impact of ice nuclei con…

Nucleation in physical and nonphysical systems

2003

Abstract The aggregation of particles out of an initially homogeneous situation is well known in physics. Depending on the system under consideration and its control parameters, the cluster formation in a supersaturated (metastable or unstable) situation has been observed in nucleation physics as well as in other branches. We investigate the well-known example of condensation (formation of liquid droplets) in an undercooled vapour to conclude that the formation of bound states as a phase transition is related to transportation science. We present a comparison of nucleation in an isothermal–isochoric container with traffic congestion on a circular one-lane freeway. The analysis is based, in …

Influence of gas environment on the dynamics of wetting transition of laser-textured stainless steel meshes

2021

We analyze the role of surrounding gas and aging in ambient air in the wettability behavior of laser-processed stainless steel meshes. Laser texturing of meshes was carried out in the presence of different gases (N2, O2, CO2, Ar, and SF6) in ambient atmospheric air and under different vacuum conditions. The influence of each gas on the evolution of the wettability properties after aging in ambient air is analyzed. The effects of low-pressure and vacuum aging allowed transforming the initial superhydrophilic characteristics of the laser-structured meshes to an almost superhydrophobic state.

Ab Initio Study of the Mechanism and Thermochemistry of the Atmospheric Reaction NO + O3 → NO2 + O2

2002

The atmospheric reaction between NO and ozone has been investigated using ab initio methods. The structures of all reactants, products, intermediates, and transition states of reaction 1 have been optimized and characterized at the UMP2(full) level of theory. The 6-31G(d), 6-311G(d), and 6-311G(df) basis sets have also been used to calibrate the effect of the basis set functions on the optimized structures and energies of all stationary points. Finally, we have reoptimized at the UMP4(SDQ, full)/6-31G(d) and 6-311G(d) levels. The energetics of the reaction has been studied more accurately within the G2 and G2(MP2) schemes. Also, QCISD(T)/6-311G(d) single-point calculations have been perform…

Full configuration interaction calculation of singlet excited states of Be3

2004

The full configuration interaction (FCI) study of the singlets vertical spectrum of the neutral beryllium trimer has been performed using atomic natural orbitals [3s2p1d] basis set. The FCI triangular equilibrium structure of the ground state has been used to calculate the FCI vertical excitation energies up to 4.8 eV. The FCI vertical ionization potential for the same geometry and basis set amounts to 7.6292 eV. The FCI dipole and quadrupole transition moments from the ground state are reported as well. The FCI electric quadrupole moment of the X (3)A(1) (') ground state has been also calculated with the same basis set (Theta(zz)=-2.6461 a.u., Theta(xx)=Theta(yy)=-1/2Theta(zz)). Twelve of …

A Theoretical Study of the Low-Lying Excited States of trans- and cis-Urocanic Acid

1999

A multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) study of the lowest lying states in the gas-phase electronic spectra of trans- and cis-urocanic acid is presented. Geometries of both isomers have been optimized at the MP2/6-31G(d) and π-CASSCF/ANO-L(4s3p1d,2s) levels of theory. The geometries are found to differ considerably between the two levels. The vertical and 0−0 excitation spectra were calculated for each isomer. Both singlet and triplet states are described for each, including the lowest lying ππ* excitations and the nOπ* excitations. Remarkably, in the trans spectrum, it is found that the nOπ* state has a higher vertical excitation energy than the lowest ππ* (5.12 v…
