Transitivity prominence within and across modalities
2020
The idea of transitivity as a scalar phenomenon is well known (e.g., Hopper & Thompson 1980; Tsunoda 1985; Haspelmath 2015). However, as with most areas of linguistic study, it has been almost exclusively studied with a focus on spoken languages. A rare exception to this is Kimmelman (2016), who investigates transitivity in Russian Sign Language (RSL) on the basis of corpus data. Kimmelman attempts to establish a transitivity prominence hierarchy of RSL verbs, and compares this ranking to the verb meanings found in the ValPal database (Hartmann, Haspelmath & Bradley 2013). He arrives at the conclusion that using the frequency of overt objects in corpus data is a successful measure o…
Yläkoulun S2-oppilaiden transitiivi-ilmausten käyttö Eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen taitotasoilla
2014
Artikkelissa tarkastelen, miten transitiivi-ilmausten kaytto kehittyy ylakouluikaisten suomi toisena kielena -oppilaiden Eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen (2003) taitotasoille arvioiduissa kirjoitelmissa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittaa, miten nuoret kirjoittajat kayttavat yleista ja monikayttoista ilmaustyyppia, transitiivikonstruktiota, oppijansuomessa ja miten konstruktion toteutumat muuttuvat ja varioivat kielitaidon kehittyessa. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu Jyvaskylan yliopiston Cefling-hankkeessa 7.–9.-luokkalaisilta S2-oppilailta keratyista kirjoitelmista, joita analysoin transitiivi-ilmausten taajuuden ja tarkkuuden kannalta. Laadullisen tarkastelun lahtokohtana on kayttopohjainen konst…
The fluted fragment revisited
2019
AbstractWe study the fluted fragment, a decidable fragment of first-order logic with an unbounded number of variables, motivated by the work of W. V. Quine. We show that the satisfiability problem for this fragment has nonelementary complexity, thus refuting an earlier published claim by W. C. Purdy that it is in NExpTime. More precisely, we consider ${\cal F}{{\cal L}^m}$, the intersection of the fluted fragment and the m-variable fragment of first-order logic, for all $m \ge 1$. We show that, for $m \ge 2$, this subfragment forces $\left\lfloor {m/2} \right\rfloor$-tuply exponentially large models, and that its satisfiability problem is $\left\lfloor {m/2} \right\rfloor$-NExpTime-hard. We…
A criterion for zero averages and full support of ergodic measures
2018
International audience; Consider a homeomorphism $f$ defined on a compact metric space $X$ and a continuous map $\phi\colon X \to \mathbb{R}$. We provide an abstract criterion, called control at any scale with a long sparse tail for a point $x\in X$ and the map $\phi$, which guarantees that any weak* limit measure $\mu$ of the Birkhoff average of Dirac measures $\frac1n\sum_0^{n-1}\delta(f^i(x))$ s such that $\mu$-almost every point $y$ has a dense orbit in $X$ and the Birkhoff average of $\phi$ along the orbit of $y$ is zero.As an illustration of the strength of this criterion, we prove that the diffeomorphisms with nonhyperbolic ergodic measures form a $C^1$-open and dense subset of the s…
Transitivity in coherence-based probability logic
2016
We study probabilistically informative (weak) versions of transitivity by using suitable definitions of defaults and negated defaults in the setting of coherence and imprecise probabilities. We represent p-consistent sequences of defaults and/or negated defaults by g-coherent imprecise probability assessments on the respective sequences of conditional events. Moreover, we prove the coherent probability propagation rules for Weak Transitivity and the validity of selected inference patterns by proving p-entailment of the associated knowledge bases. Finally, we apply our results to study selected probabilistic versions of classical categorical syllogisms and construct a new version of the squa…
Unaccusativity
2012
Abstract My research is an attempt at suggesting a cross-linguistically valid definition of verbs characterized by unagentivity and affectedness such as “burn”, “die”, “sink”, “fall”, “slide”, etc., which according to the present analysis constitute the semantic core of unaccusativity. Both synchronic and diachronic approaches are followed. Various definitions have been attributed to these verbs (eventives, anticausatives, transformatives, inchoatives, decausatives). Although Perlmutter & Postal (1984) classify unaccusative verbs on the basis of their syntactic behavior, they also argue that the syntactic expression of arguments is always determinable on the basis of the meaning of the verb…
Adding Transitivity and Counting to the Fluted Fragment
2023
We study the impact of adding both counting quantifiers and a single transitive relation to the fluted fragment - a fragment of first-order logic originating in the work of W.V.O. Quine. The resulting formalism can be viewed as a multi-variable, non-guarded extension of certain systems of description logic featuring number restrictions and transitive roles, but lacking role-inverses. We establish the finite model property for our logic, and show that the satisfiability problem for its k-variable sub-fragment is in (k+1)-NExpTime. We also derive ExpSpace-hardness of the satisfiability problem for the two-variable, fluted fragment with one transitive relation (but without counting quantifiers…
Ukrainas krīzes attēlojums plašsaziņas līdzekļos
2015
