Child-Centered and Teacher-Directed Practices in Two Different Countries: A Descriptive Case Study in Finnish and Japanese Grade 1 Classrooms

This descriptive case study examined how teaching practices were evidenced in Grade 1 classrooms in two different cultural and educational contexts, Finland and Japan. Teachers’ teaching practices were video-recorded in 53 classrooms in Finland and six classrooms in Japan and rated with the Early Childhood Classroom Observation Measure by trained investigators. Four Finnish teachers and two Japanese teachers having the highest scores in either child-centered or teacher-directed practices were selected for a descriptive case study to take a closer look at how teaching practices in terms of management, climate, and instruction are evidenced in authentic classroom situations. Understanding the intellectual demands of an intended curriculum is crucial as it defines the frames for actual teaching and learning processes and practice during the lessons. In this study, upper-secondary school chemistry curricula contents in Czechia, Finland, and Turkey were analysed, and their objectives were compared using the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (RBT). Societal and cultural norms are important in shaping how individuals live, study, and work. Of particular interest in recent research is the role of mindfulness, defined as the ability to focus on the present moment, and how it can impact cognitive function and productivity. This study examines the relationship between scholastic achievement and mindfulness among university students in China, Finland, Germany, South Africa, and the United States. Tässä pro gradu –tutkielmassa tutkitaan, minkälaisia koodinvaihtofunktioita esiintyy lukion ruotsin ja saksan opetuksessa ja miksi opettajat vaihtavat kieltä luokkahuoneessa. Lisäksi tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, onko koodinvaihtofunktioissa huomattavissa samankaltaisuuksia vai eroavatko ne toisistaan. Tutkimusta varten kerättiin materiaalia nauhureiden avulla yhdeltä lukion pitkän ruotsin ja yhdeltä lukion pitkän saksan kurssilta yhteensä 12 tuntia (6h+6h). Tämän laadullisen tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tutkia Suomessa ja Isossa-Britanniassa asuvien eri kieli- ja kulttuuritaustaisten pariskuntien näkemyksiä kaksikielisyydestä perheen arjessa ja millä keinoin lasten kaksikielistä kasvua edistetään. Lisäksi selvitetään miten kaksikielisyys ja monikulttuurisuus vaikuttavat perheenjäsenten välisiin suhteisiin sekä perheiden lasten identiteetin rakentumiseen. Yhtenä tutkimuskohteena on myös vanhempien käsitys näiden kahden yhteiskunnan osallistumisesta kaksikielisten perheiden elämään. Finnish and German student teachers’ motivations for choosing teaching as a career : The first application of the FIT-Choice scale in Finland

This study introduces and validates the Finnish version of the FIT-Choice scale and uses the scale to explore Finnish undergraduate students' motivations for choosing teaching as a career as well as their perceptions of teaching as a profession in comparison to German student teachers. The results replicated the FIT-Choice structure both in Finland and Germany. Sample comparisons revealed that motivations for teaching and perceptions of the teaching profession reflected both differences and similarities between Finland and Germany.
