Dune systems' characterization and evolution in the andalusia mediterranean coast (Spain)

2020

This paper deals with the characterization and evolution of dune systems along the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia, in the South of Spain, a first step to assess their relevant value in coastal flood protection and in the determination of sound management strategies to protect such valuable ecological systems. Different dune types were mapped as well as dune toe position and fragmentation, which favors dune sensitivity to storms&rsquo

Future Climate Forcings and Olive Yield in a Mediterranean Orchard

2014

The olive tree is one of the most characteristic rainfed trees in the Mediterranean region. Observed and forecasted climate modifications in this region, such as the CO2 concentration and temperature increase and the net radiation, rainfall and wind speed decrease, will likely alter vegetation water stress and modify productivity. In order to simulate how climatic change could alter soil moisture dynamic, biomass growth and fruit productivity, a water-driven crop model has been used in this study. The numerical model, previously calibrated on an olive orchard located in Sicily (Italy) with a satisfactory reproduction of historical olive yield data, has been forced with future climate scenar…

Treatment of Oily Wastewater with Membrane Bioreactor Systems

2017

The aim of the present work was to investigate the behavior of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) system for the treatment of oily wastewater. A bench scale MBR was fed with synthetic wastewater containing diesel fuel. Organic carbon, hydrocarbon and ammonium removal, kinetic constants, extracellular polymeric substances production, and membrane fouling rates were monitored. The MBR plant was operated for more than 200 days, and the results highlighted good carbon removal and nitrification, suggesting a sort of biomass adaptation to hydrocarbons. Membrane fouling analysis showed an increase in total resistance, likely due to hydrocarbons, which caused an irreversible fouling (pore blocking) mainly…

QSPR prediction of retention times of phenylurea herbicides by biological plastic evolution.

2012

A simple/sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic method, with ultraviolet (UV) detection, was developed for phenylurea-herbicide analysis, which involves preconcentration using solid-phase extraction. Mobile phase was acetonitrile/water at flow-rate of 1 mL.min-1 with direct UV absorbance detection at 210 nm. Analyte separation studied on a C18 column was applied successfully to herbicide analysis in soft drink's brands and tap water. Good linearity/repeatability was observed for all pesticides. Retention times increase as: metoxuron < monuron < diuron < matazachlor < linuron. They are modelled by structure-property relations. The effect of different types of features is analyzed:…

Solid-phase extraction in multi-residue pesticide analysis of water

1993

The determination of pesticides in water is fundamental to the solution of environmental problems as natural waters are usually contaminated with a large number of pesticides. The selection of an isolation and/or concentration technique depends largely on the class of pesticides to be determined. It is often necessary to determine simultaneously a wide variety of compounds in a water sample. Application of solid-phase extraction techniques offers a solution. The mechanisms of solid-phase extraction, types of sorbents and their application to multi-residue pesticide analysis are reviewed.

Impeller optimization in crossflow hydraulic turbines

2021

Crossflow turbines represent a valuable choice for energy recovery in aqueducts, due to their constructive simplicity and good efficiency under variable head jump conditions. Several experimental and numerical studies concerning the optimal design of crossflow hydraulic turbines have already been proposed, but all of them assume that structural safety is fully compatible with the sought after geometry. We show first, with reference to a specific study case, that the geometry of the most efficient impeller would lead shortly, using blades with a traditional circular profile made with standard material, to their mechanical failure. A methodology for fully coupled fluid dynamic and mechanical …

Multi Sources Water Supply System Optimal Control: A Case Study

2014

The optimal operation of a multi quality network was analysed applying Linear Programming methods. The peculiar service condition of the industrial city of Gela (Italy) was investigated. The network is supplied both from waters derived from a desalination plant and other natural sources. The method aimed to minimise energy cost and find the optimal operation control, while satisfying demand and quality constraints, specifically with regard to water temperature. The method proved to be effective in the selection of the optimal management strategy after the definition of a specific water quality target. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

A statistical study of the quality of surface water intended for human consumption near Valencia (Spain)

2007

Water quality in the European Union is subject to legislation through directives that are applicable in all Member States. The directives specify a set of physical and chemical parameters that should be regularly controlled using a network of sampling points, with sampling based on the intended use of the water. This paper presents the results of a statistical comparison of the quality of water intended for human consumption at two different locations (the Canal de Benagéber and the Canal Júcar-Turia) near the town of Valencia (Spain). These are currently the only canals that could supply Valencia and other nearby towns with drinking water. The parameters considered in this paper are the on…
