Potential Application of Voltammetry of Microparticles for Dating Porcine Blood-based Binding Media used in Taiwanese Architectural Polychromies

A method for dating Hemoglobine-containing archaeological samples using the voltammetry of microparticles is described. This is based on the record of the voltammetric response of such materials attached to paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes in contact with aqueous acetate buffer. Signals attributable to the Fe(III)/Fe(II) iron couple and their catalytic enhancement in the presence of H(2)O(2) can be correlated, via first-order reaction kinetics, with the time of aging of the samples. The method has been applied to the study and dating of the polychromed architectural decoration of different parts of the architectural complex of the Longshan Temple in Lukang (18(th)  century, Taiwan).

Ultrastructural changes of sparkling wine lees during long-term aging in real enological conditions.

Ultrastructural changes of lees of three series of sparkling wines produced using the traditional method during long-term aging (4 years) were assessed by high-pressure freezing in combination with transmission electron microscopy. The stratified structure of the cell wall disappeared throughout aging. After 18 months, the microfibrous material of the cell wall appeared more diffuse and the amorphous midzone of the inner wall layer was progressively degraded. From 30 months onward, the cell wall consisted of a tangled structure of fibers. In spite of these changes, the cell wall of yeasts remained unbroken at 48 months of wine aging. Influence of organic amendments on diuron leaching through an acidic and a calcareous vineyard soil using undisturbed lysimeters.

9 pages; International audience; The influence of different organic amendments on diuron leaching was studied through undisturbed vineyard soil columns. Two composts (A and D), the second at two stages of maturity, and two soils (VR and Bj) were sampled. After 1 year, the amount of residues (diuron þ metabolites) in the leachates of the VR soil (0.19e0.71%) was lower than in the Bj soil (4.27e8.23%), which could be explained by stronger diuron adsorption on VR. An increase in the amount of diuron leached through the amended soil columns, compared to the blank, was observed for the Bj soil only. Release of macromolecules by Saccharomyces cerevisiae during ageing of French flor sherry wine “Vin jaune”

The French flor sherry wine "Vin jaune" spends 6 years and 3 months in the same barrel under a yeast velum. Because of temperature variations in the cellars, this velum sinks partially into the wine and a deposit of dead yeasts cells accumulates in the bottom of the barrels, favouring the formation of new velum. Growth and autolysis occur simultaneously. This study investigated the evolution of macromolecules released by yeasts during the ageing of "Vin jaune" in a model system closely simulating winemaking. Quantifying the individual effects of ethanol and temperature on the fitness advantage of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The presence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in grape berries and fresh musts is usually very low. However, as fermentation progresses, the population levels of this species considerably increase. Changes in the Phytoalexin Content of Various Vitis Spp. in Response to Ultraviolet C Elicitation

The phytoalexin production potential of three American Vitis species and that of three cultivars of Vitis vinifera were evaluated in response to UV-C irradiation. Time course changes in resveratrol, piceid, epsilon-viniferin, and pterostilbene contents were studied within 3 days after a short UV-C irradiation. Results show that the two major stilbenes accumulated as a response to UV-C elicitation are resveratrol and epsilon-viniferin, a resveratrol dehydrodimer, the concentration of both compounds usually reaching quantities >100 microgram/g of fresh weight. Influence of respiratory rate and end-expiratory pressure variation on cyclic alveolar recruitment in an experimental lung injury model

Introduction Cyclic alveolar recruitment/derecruitment (R/D) is an important mechanism of ventilator-associated lung injury. In experimental models this process can be measured with high temporal resolution by detection of respiratory-dependent oscillations of the paO2 (ΔpaO2).
