The effect of a unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesion and/or repeated administration of levodopa (L-DOPA) to normal and 6-OHDA-lesioned rats on alpha-synuclein mRNA expression was investigated by in situ hybridization histochemistry. A 6-OHDA lesion of the nigro-striatal pathway alone, confirmed by the loss of nigral tyrosine hydroxylase mRNA expression, markedly decreased alpha-synuclein mRNA in the lesioned substantia nigra (SN). Several receptor systems in the bladder causing detrusor smooth muscle contraction stimulate phospholipase C (PLC). PLC inhibition abolishes bladder contraction via P2Y6 but not that via M3 muscarinic receptors, indicating a receptor-dependent role of PLC. Therefore, we explored the role of PLC in rat bladder contraction by bradykinin. The antihypertensive and diuretic effects of the flavonoids extracted from Spergularia purpurea Pers. (SP) were studied both in normotensive (NTR) and spontaneously hypertensive conscious rats (SHR). Daily oral administration of the flavonoid mixture (5 mg/kg for 1 week) exhibited a significant decrease in blood pressure with variation coefficient (Delta) of 20 in SHR rats and 11 in NTR rats. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly and respectively with 17 and 24% in SHR, and with 11 and 16% in NTR. Abstract The present study was designed to explore the possible antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects of the aqueous extract of Ajuga iva (0.5% in the diet) in rats fed a high-cholesterol (1%) diet (HCD). The results indicated that the HCD-Ai versus HCD treatment led to many changes in biochemical parameters. They showed a decrease of plasma total cholesterol (TC) and VLDL-cholesterol but an increase of HDL2-cholesterol. The triacylglycerol contents were reduced in plasma and in VLDL. The lipid peroxidation determined by TBARS was decreased by 75% in plasma. TBARS in liver, heart and kidneys were highly reduced excepted in the adipose tissue. Rats with carnitine deficiency due to trimethylhydrazinium propionate (mildronate) administered at 80 mg/100 g body weight per day for 10 days developed liver steatosis only upon fasting. This study aimed to determine whether the transient steatosis resulted from triglyceride accumulation due to the amount of fatty acids preserved through impaired fatty acid oxidation and/or from up-regulation of lipid exchange between liver and adipose tissue. It has been demonstrated that the posteromedial cortical amygdaloid nucleus (PMCo), is sexually dimorphic. It is shown (Experiment 1) that male orchidectomy on the day of birth (D1) decreases the volume and number of neurons of the PMCo, while a single injection of propionate testosterone to the female on D1 masculinizes the PMCo in this gender. Since male gonadectomy on D1 (Experiment 2) is counteracted by a single injection of estradiol benzoate in males it has been suggested that the masculinization of the PMCo is due to the aromatization of testosterone to estradiol in this structure.
