Benign and severe early-life seizures: a round in the first year of life

2018

Abstract Background At the onset, differentiation between abnormal non-epileptic movements, and epileptic seizures presenting in early life is difficult as is clinical diagnosis and prognostic evaluation of the various seizure disorders presenting at this age. Seizures starting in the first year of life including the neonatal period might have a favorable course, such as in infants presenting with benign familial neonatal epilepsy, febrile seizures simplex or acute symptomatic seizures. However, in some cases, the onset of seizures at birth or in the first months of life have a dramatic evolution with severe cerebral impairment. Seizure disorders starting in early life include the “epilepti…

A Systemic Review with Visualization using Adjutant: Application in Case of Febrile Seizure Research

2020

Febrile seizures (FS) on pediatric age is challenging because it’s higher incidence and recurrence as neurologic disorder in childhood. Our study show an approach to perform a systemic, in-depth, updated review analysis with visualization on current knowledge about febrile seizure. We performed a literature search of Pub Med research articles related to febrile seizure that were published until August 2020. The automated search was conducted using R open source package Adjutant with the following query terms: “febrile AND (seizures OR convuls*)”. The search resulted in 8200 documents corpus and 45 cluster topics. This kind of analysis and visualization could be useful for practitioners and …

PRELIMINARY-OBSERVATIONS OF METABOLIC CHARACTERIZATION OF BILATERAL TEMPORAL EPILEPTIC FOCUS, USING PROTON MAGNETIC-RESONANCE SPECTROSCOPY - 3 CASES

1994

International audience; Abstract: The authors report the case of 3 patients with bilateral temporal lobe epilepsy demonstrated by EEG and sphenoidal electrodes. Two out of the 3 patients presented with childhood febrile convulsions. Their neurological and mental examination was normal. EEG showed spikes within the anterior part of the 2 temporal lobes. CT scan and MRI showed no atrophic lesion within the 2 temporal lobes. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, performed within a cube of 8 cube-centimetres localized in the anterior part of the 2 temporal lobes showed a significant decrease of N-acetyl-aspartate in the 2 temporal lobes of the 3 cases, compared with controls matched with age,…

An authentication case study: Antonio Palomino versus Vicente Guillo paintings in the vaulted ceiling of the Sant Joan del Mercat church (Valencia, S…

2012

In 1695, the Valencian artist Vicente Guillo was engaged in painting the vault of the Sant Joan del Mercat church in Valencia, Spain. After preliminary work was carried out, his contract was cancelled. In 1697, Antonio Palomino, renowned for the publication of his technical treatise entitled El Museo Pictorio y Escala Optica, was finally selected as the painter in charge of decorating the vaulted ceiling of Sant Joan del Mercat. This paper reports an analytical study focused on the characterisation and discrimination of the palette and painting procedures used by Palomino and Guillo in the frescoes of Sant Joan del Mercat. For this purpose, Raman spectroscopy combined with light microscopy,…

Seizure in isolated brain cryptococcoma: Case report and review of the literature

2021

Background: Central nervous system (CNS) cryptococcosis is an invasive fungal infection predominantly seen among immunosuppressed patients causing meningitis or meningoencephalitis. Rarely, cryptococcosis can affect immunologically competent hosts with the formation of localized CNS granulomatous reaction, known as cryptococcoma. Common symptoms of CNS cryptococcoma are headaches, consciousness or mental changes, focal deficits, and cranial nerve dysfunction. Rarely, seizures are the only presenting symptom. Case Description: We report the case of an immunocompetent patient with a solitary CNS cryptococcoma presenting with a long history of non-responsive generalized seizure who has been s…
