Éducation primaire et croissance économique en Afrique subsaharienne : les conditions d'une relation efficace

This article is looking at the causes of the low effectiveness of educational investment in Subsaharan Africa, both at the micro level (effect on labour productivity), and at the macro level (effect on the rate of economic growth). Several recent empirical studies have shown that education impact is systematically weaker in this region than in the rest of the world, and even sometimes negative, as in the case of agricultural productivity. Two series of causes may explain this lack of impact : first, inappropriate economic policies at the macro level which hamper the role of education, either through negative incentives structures, or because of the absence of provision of associated factors…

Sur la dynamique des acquisitions à l'école élémentaire

On the dynamics of learning in elementary schools. - The statistical results presented in this paper are based on data from a longitudinal survey of elementary school children in the Dijon area. They provide strong support for the hypothesis — which stresses the cumulative aspect of learning, predicting that better mastery of concepts and higher levels of initial learning are inputs which aid in further acquisition of learning — indicating that differences in learning in grade 1 that are attributable to pedagogical inputs exert a large and statistically significant effect on learning in grades 2 and 3.

Les aides-éducateurs à l'école primaire : entre polyvalence et spécialisation, quelle efficacité pédagogique ?

This paper examines the situation of classroom assistants who were recruited three years ago in French schools. This research took place in 150 schools (academy of Burgundy) in which two age groups (8 and 10) were assessed both at the begining and the end of the school year. It concerned a large sample of classroom assistants (150) whose timetables have been collected to know precisely how their time is used in schools and how it may influence students achievement. First of all, the main results show that classroom assistants take part in a lot of varied activities, especially in academic fields. L'enseignement des langues vivantes à l'école élémentaire : éléments d'évaluation des effets au collège

This evaluation is based on a longitudinal survey carried out over two years concerning 1 500 pupils who started secondary school. Some of them were initiated in English in the last two grades of Primary school (experimentation launched by the Ministry of Education), the other pupils had started learning English at Secondary School. Two kinds of results were obtained : first, we described a certain number of factors that influence pupils' acquisitions in English ; second, we tried to show the extent to which the outcome of early initiation explains the differences between pupils during the secondary school.
