How to develop strategies of adaptation to climate change based on a foresight exercise?

2019

Context and purpose of the study ‐ Prospective studies raise a real intellectual interest for those who contribute to them or take cognizance of it. But they are often considered too difficult to operationalize, and most of the prospective exercises are not followed by action plans, particularly at value chain level. To overcome this difficulty in linking the work of experts and the decisions of stakeholder of value chains, a particular effort was made to operationalize the outcomes from a prospective study on the French vine and wine industry in the context of climate change. The approach consisted in collecting and using the feed‐back of professionalsfrom the wine industry about these out…

2010

Terroir is a key-concept in viticulture that is more and more widely recognized to explain variations in wine quality and wine style. Terroir refers to an area and thus possesses a geographical dimension. Hence, zoning of viticultural terroir is necessary. This paper addresses soil related aspects of terroir zoning. The first step of the zoning process is a clear identification of the objectives that are being pursued: demarcation of production areas, the adaptation of the viticultural management practices to variations in soil types or the protection of viticultural landscapes. The second step is the definition of a scale adapted to the objectives. The precision of the zoning increases wit…

2020

During April 2019 France experienced several frost events that caused extensive damage to almost all of its winegrowing regions. In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté the frost effects were very punctual and spatially diffused, the greatest damage being observed in the early bud breaking winegrowing sub-regions of Saône-et-Loire and the south of the Côte de Beaune. This study focuses on the multi-scalar analysis of the spring frost event underwent during the night between the 4th and 5th of April on a vineyard plot located in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune appellation. The analysis highlights the impact of local parameters (topography, surface discontinuity, etc.) on the spatio-temporal structuring of tem…

Regionalizing rainfall at very high resolution over la Réunion island using a regional climate model.

2014

Abstract Regional climate models (RCMs) should be evaluated with respect to their ability to downscale large-scale climate information to the local scales, which are sometimes strongly modulated by surface conditions. This is the case for La Réunion (southwest Indian Ocean) because of its island context and its complex topography. Large-scale atmospheric configurations such as tropical cyclones (TCs) may have an amplifying effect on local rainfall patterns that only a very high-resolution RCM, forced by the large scales and resolving finescale processes, may simulate properly. This paper documents the capability of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) RCM to regionalize rainfall…

Climate zoning of the Burgundy winegrowing region

2018

As one of the most emblematic wine regions of cool climate terroir viticulture, Burgundy is endowed with a set of very specific natural features suitable to the production of high quality wines, where climate is arguably one of the main factors to profoundly influence vine physiology/phenology and grape composition. These environmental nuances have led to a wide variety of styles in Pinot noir and Chardonnay wines that have been largely acknowledged and appreciated by the international market and vitivinicultural industry. However, individual grape varieties optimum quality is known to be closely related to well-defined climate and geographical ranges. Climate change and global warming late…

Variations in soil-water use by grapevine according to plant water status and soil physical-chemical characteristics - A 3D spatio-temporal analysis.

2016

14 pages; International audience; Understanding plant and soil-water relationships is crucial to optimise agricultural management. In this multidisciplinary work, soil geophysics and plant physiological measurements are coupled and a statistical method is proposed to visualising plant soil-water uptake in space and time. The method is applied in a vineyard context and shows differences in the use of tranpirable soil water by grapevine according to the type of soil and the time of the day (day/night).During two years the water stress experienced by a single Chardonnay/SO4 grapevine clone was monitored both at pre-dawn and midday by leaf water potentials in two field plots exclusively differe…

Using foresight exercise to design adaptation policy to climate change: The case of the French wine industry

2018

Foresight studies are regularly conducted at sectoral or geographical scales, in order to help policy makers and economic actors to define their strategy of adaptation to climate change (CC). Some studies are rather “quick exercises”, in which a panel of experts is consulted to define the expected impacts of CC and to identify adaptation leviers for future policy. In other cases, a true foresight methodology is developed, leading to the building of scenarios based on : i) a systemic and participatory approach, ii) the definition of key variables, iii) the choice of assumptions and the coherent relations between these assumptions, the narrative description of scenarios. This participatory di…

2009

Climate projections over France wine-growing region and its potential impact on phenology

2022

Climate change represents a major challenge for the French wine industry. Climatic conditions in French vineyards have already changed and will continue to evolve. One of the notable effects on grapevine is the advancing growing season. The aim of this study is to characterise the evolution of agroclimatic indicators (Huglin index, number of hot days, mean temperature, cumulative rainfall and number of rainy days during the growing season) at French wine-growing regions scale between 1980 and 2019 using gridded data (8 km resolution, SAFRAN) and for the middle of the 21th century (2046-2065) with 21 GCMs statistically debiased and downscaled at 8 km. Water status modelling : impact of local rainfall variability in Burgundy (France)

2016

6 pages; International audience; Water status is a key factor in vine development and berry ripening. Water status is strongly affected byenvironmental parameters such as soil and climate. Whereas at local scale the soil variability is frequentlyaccounted for, little scientific reports are available concerning the impact of local rainfall variability ongrapevine water status. In order to accurately register the space and time variations of rainfall at local scale, adense rain-gauges network has been installed in Burgundy. It is composed of 45 rain-gauges over a 28 km² area.Rainfall data collected by each rain-gauge in 2014 and 2015 was used as input variables in the grapevine waterbalance m…

The use of soil electrical resistivity to monitor plant and soil water relationships in vineyards

2015

Abstract. Soil water availability deeply affects plant physiology. In viticulture it is considered as a major contributor to the "terroir" expression. The assessment of soil water in field conditions is a difficult task especially over large surfaces. New techniques, are therefore required to better explore variations of soil water content in space and time with low disturbance and with great precision. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) meets these requirements, for applications in plant sciences, agriculture and ecology. In this paper, possible techniques to develop models that allow the use of ERT to spatialise soil water available to plants are reviewed. An application of soil wate…

2019

Powdery mildew, one of the most widespread grapevine disease, causes damage to the plant foliage, reduces yields and altersquality of grapes. This fungus development is strongly controlled by climate conditions and viticulture requires in many regionslarge quantities of pesticides for disease control. Projecting the impacts of climate change on these disease and developinga better understanding of future disease risk is crucial, given the increasing societal pressure for pesticide reduction andsustainability. This study focused on (i) the elaboration of an empirical model that establishes links between monthly climate dataand annual powdery mildew pressure in Champagne and (ii) the use of t…

2019

The warming undergone by the global climate does not necessarily entail a decrease in frost risk in agriculture/viticulture. Since both plant and climate are likely to evolve under changing environmental conditions, plant vulnerability and the meteorological phenomenon (frost) should be considered jointly when assessing the evolution of frost risk. This study aims at documenting the spatial and temporal frost risk changes in the winegrowing subregions of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The period between budburst and the last spring frost occurrence date has been considered as the most vulnerable for grapevines. We considered a plant as being stressed by a frost event when the temperature drops be…
