This update on treatment of asthma exacerbations in children is the result of an Italian Pediatric Society Task-force, made up of a panel of experts working in 2007–2008. The aim is to give clear indications on the use of the drugs most employed in children, grading the quality of evidence and the strength of recommendations. Suggestions on their limits due to unlicensed and off-label use are reported. The level of evidence and the strength of recommendations for different therapeutic approaches demonstrate that frequently the use of drugs in children is extrapolated from the experience in adults and that more studies are required to endorse the correct use of different drugs in asthmatic …

Modulation of Nitric Oxide Production by Tetracyclines and Chemically Modified Tetracyclines

Chemically modified tetracyclines (CMTs) dose-dependently decreased inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and, consequently, nitric oxide (NO) formation by the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated J774 line. The inhibitory effect was due to a specific reduction in the iNOS protein content in the cells, as attested by Western blot analysis and by the inhibition of iNOS mRNA accumulation. Furthermore, CMTs cause a dose-dependent increase in cell death in the J774 line mediated by the NO-independent apoptotic mechanism.

Interleukin-6 plays a central role in regulating the immune system, hematopoiesis, and acute phase reaction. It interacts with a receptor complex consisting of a specific ligand-binding protein (IL-6R, gp80) and a signal transduction protein (gp130). In this report, serum levels of IL-6 and a soluble form of the interleukin-6 receptor (sIL-6R) were evaluated in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The correlation between IL-6 and sIL-6R values, the stage of hepatocellular carcinoma, and main liver function tests was also studied.

The potential leishmanicidal activity of interleukin-15 (IL-15) was examined while priming with the cytokine phorbol-myristate-acetate (PMA)-activated macrophages and infecting them with Leishmania infantum parasites. The activation of macrophage cultures with IL-15 determined a significant anti-leishmanial activity, comparable with that induced by interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). The killing of Leishmania in macrophages primed with IL-15, as well as with IFN-gamma, was followed by an increase in the IL-12 synthesis. Acquisition of thermotolerance in sea urchin embryos correlates with the synthesis and age of the heat shock proteins.

Preheating at 31 degrees C induces thermotolerance in Paracentrotus lividus embryos, which therefore become able to withstand 1-h treatment at the otherwise lethal temperature of 35 degrees C, and to develop normally. The acquisition of thermotolerance is positively correlated with the amount of heat shock proteins produced during the 31 degrees C treatment. Evidence is provided that the heat shock proteins, although present in the embryo for long periods after synthesis, lose their effect on thermotolerance within 3 h of the cessation of synthesis.

A case-control study on breast, cervix and endometrium cancer cases registered in Ragusa between January 1, 1983 and June 30, 1985 has been conducted. Information on risk factors has been obtained by means of a structured questionnaire. Risk factors for endometrium cancer were: few children (1–2 vs > 4 OR 15.18, 95%CL 1.96–117.64), oestrogenic treatment (OR 2.20, 95%CL 1.05–4.90), obesity (Quetelet index >30 vs 2 vs 0 OR 9.87, 95%CL 1.46–66.66), no contraception (OR 8.33, 95%CL 2.38–25.00), younger age of mother at birth (OR 6.89, 95%CL 1.71–27.70). Some important facilities offered by the information technology to innovate the development of traditional floras are illustrated and discussed. These include: random access interactive tools for the identification of species, low cost, easy updating, virtually unlimited space for high resolution images and texts, on-line utilities, strong synergy between authors and users. It is argued that the combination of printed books with integrated digital utilities and data-sources is the most desirable structure for future floras.
