Isostructural Potassium and Thallium Salts of Sterically Crowded Thio‐ and Selenophenols: A Structural and Computational Study
Because of their similar cationic radii, potassium and thallium(I) compounds are usually regarded as closely related. Homologous molecular species containing either K+ or Tl+ are very rare, however. We have synthesized potassium and thallium salts MEAr* [M, E = K, S (2a); K, Se (2b); Tl, S (3a); Tl, Se (3b); Ar* = 2,6-Trip2C6H3, Trip = 2,4,6-iPr3C6H2] derived from terphenyl-substituted thio- and selenophenols. In the solid-state structures of dimeric 2a, 2b, 3a, and 3b additional metal-ηn–π-arene interactions to the flanking arms of the terphenyl substituents of different hapticity n are observed. Remarkably, the homologous potassium and thallium complexes 2b and 3b crystallize in isomorpho…

Ambident PCN Heterocycles: N- and P-Phosphanylation of Lithium 1,3-Benzazaphospholides
Synthetic and structural aspects of the phosphanylation of 1,3-benzazaphospholides 1(Li), ambident benzofused azaphosphacyclopentadienides, are presented. The unusual properties of phospholyl-1,3,2-diazaphospholes inspired us to study the coupling of 1(Li) with chlorodiazaphospholene 2, which led to the N-substituted product 3. Reaction of 1(Li) with chlorodiphenyl- and chlorodicyclohexylphosphane likewise gave N-phosphanylbenzazaphospholes 4 and 5, whereas with the more bulky di-tert-butyl- and di-1-adamantylchlorophosphanes, the diphosphanes 6 and 7 are obtained; in the case of 7 they are isolated as a dimeric LiCl(THF) adduct. Structural information was provided by single-crystal X-ray d…

Aryldimethylsilyl Modified Hypersilanes
Aryldimethylsilyl-substituted hypersilanes ArSiMe2Hyp [Hyp =Si(SiMe3)3; Ar = Mes (3a), Bph (3b), Mph (3c), Pph (3d), Tph (3e); Dpp (3f); with Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, Bph = 2-PhC6H4, Mph = 2-MesC6H4, Pph = 2′,3′,4′,5′,6′-pentamethylbiphenyl2-yl, Tph = 2′,4′,6′-triisopropylbiphenyl-2-yl and Dpp = 2,6-Ph2C6H3] have been synthesized by a multi-step reaction starting from the readily available starting materials ArI and (thf)xKHyp. For this purpose the aryl iodides were first converted into the lithium aryls by lithium-halogen exchange with n-butyl lithium. A salt-metathesis reaction with SiMe2Cl2 gave the corresponding arylchlorodimethylsilanes (2a–e) in excellent yields. Finally, reaction of 2a–e…
“Excess and Irony in Transatlantic Cable Poetry”
The completion of the first successful transatlantic telegraph link in August 1858 was a major technological triumph which sparked an extreme reaction among the American public. Not only was the laying of the cable one of the most ambitious and costly engineering projects of the nineteenth century, but the celebrations in the United States which ensued in the weeks following the establishment of this instantaneous communications link between Europe and America were unprecedented and may well ...

Present Uncertainty and Looking to the Past: The Ambiguous Literary Nationalism of Putnam’s Monthly
Putnam’s Monthly (1853-1857) was one of the best literary and general interest magazines in antebellum America. Besides its high quality, what made the New York-based magazine stand out was its commitment to publishing American writers and focusing on American themes at a time when, with no reliable international copyright protection in place, many periodicals in the United States were in the habit of reprinting the works of foreign (primarily British) authors, sometimes without payment. However, despite its optimistic literary nationalism, Putnam’s Monthly expressed uncertainty about the quality of contemporary American literature and, indeed, about the capacity of American society to enco…

Template-controlled assembly of ditopic catechol phosphines: a strategy for the generation of complexes of bidentate phosphines with different bite angles.
A rational approach to the synthesis of heterobi- or -trimetallic complexes based upon self-assembly of a flexible ditopic catechol-phosphine ligand with [(cod)PdCl(2)] and simple metal halides such as GaCl(3), BiCl(3), SnCl(4), or ZrCl(4) is described. All products were characterized by spectroscopic and analytical data and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The molecular structures can be described in terms of cis-configured palladium complexes with supramolecular bisphosphine ligands that are formed by the assembly of two phosphine catecholate fragments on a main group/transition metal template. Of particular interest are the distinct decreases in P-Pd-P bite angles and P...P dist…

Sterically crowded triazenides as novel ancillary ligands in copper chemistry
Abstract We have synthesized copper salts MN3RR′ derived from the biphenyl- or m-terphenyl-substituted triazenes Tph2N3H (1a) and Dmp(Tph)N3H (1b) (Dmp = 2,6-Mes2C6H3 with Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2; Tph = 2-TripC6H4 with Trip = 2,4,6-i-Pr3C6H2). The homoleptic copper triazenide [CuN3Tph2] (2a) was obtained in high yield from the metallation of 1a with mesityl copper in n-heptane, while the complex [CuN3(Dmp)Tph] (2b) was generated by the same method in situ only. Reaction of 2a with triphenylphosphane gave the 2:1 adduct [CuN3Tph2(PPh3)2] (3a), regardless of the used complex/donor ratio, while reaction of 2a or 2b with a stochiometric amount of t-butylisonitrile afforded the 1:1 adducts [Tph2N3Cu…

Ambident Reactivity of P˭CH‒N‒Heterocycles: Lithiation and Substitution Sites
Abstract Benzofused 1H-1,3-azaphospholes are lithiated at the N-atom by tBuLi but phosphinylation takes place at either the N- or the P-atom. Smaller chlorophosphines react at nitrogen, bulkier react at phosphorus. Substituents at C2 promote the latter mode. N-Substituted 2H-1,3-benzazaphospholes undergo CH-metalation or addition at the P˭C bond, depending on the conditions, and allow access to 2-functionally substituted benzazaphospholes or their 2,3-dihydro derivatives, new σ2P,X or σ3P,X hybrid ligands (X=O,P).

“The Rhetoric of Nationalism in Emerson’s ‘The American Scholar’”
This article studies the nationalistic rhetoric in Emerson’s “The American Scholar.” It argues that if the current critical tendency to downplay the essay’s nationalism can be seen as a welcome corrective to certain traditional readings, the address, in fact, includes a significant presence of embedded nationalistic rhetoric that has largely been ignored. The study focuses on Emerson ’s incorporation of the language of expansionism and imperialism, his adoption of an ahistorical perspective and his use of the vocabulary of action, heroism and Anglo-Saxonism to show that both the address’s nationalistic rhetoric and Emerson ’s complicity in the nationalistic ideology of his time are more pro…

Silver(I), Copper(I) and Copper(II) Complex of the New N,Se-Chelate Ligand 2-Phenylselenomethyl-1H-benzimidazole: Electrochemistry and Structure
Abstract. 2-Phenylselenomethyl-1H-benzimidazole (psbi) can form complexes in 2:1 ratio with coinage metal ions. Crystal structure analysis revealed a flattened metal coordination for [AgI(psbi)2](BF4) (1), approaching a distorted planar arrangement with weak Ag-Se bonds (d > 2.9 A) and confirmed as energy minimum by DFT calculations. The typical Jahn-Teller system [CuII(psbi)2Cl2] (2) exhibits a planar CuN2Cl2 core with weak Se---Cu---Se axial ligation (3.2944(8) A Cu--Se distance). The oxygen-sensitive compound [CuI(psbi)2](BF4) (3) exhibits electrochemically reversible oxidation in contrast to the silver(I) analogue 1.

Strukturanalytische Untersuchungen P-substituierter 1,3,2-Diazaphospholidine
2-Diphenylphosphanyl-1,3,2-diazaphospholidines were prepared via metathesis from 2-chloro-1,3,2-diazaphospholidines and LiPPh2. For some of the products, symmetrisation to tetraphenyldiphosphane and 2,2′-bis-1,3,2-diazaphospholidinyls was observed. Most of the derivatives were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which showed that all compounds studied feature elongated exocyclic P–Cl or P–P-bonds, respectively. The extent of this bond lengthening is in the P-phosphanyl-substituted species similar and in the P-chloro-derivatives less pronounced than in corresponding CC-unsaturated 1,3,2-diazaphospholenes. Structure correlation involving comparison of exocyclic P–X and endocycl…

“From Savage to Sublime (And Partway Back): Indians and Antiquity in Early Nineteenth-Century American Literature”
This article examines the comparisons made between Indians and Antiquity in early nineteenth-century American literature (notably in the works of Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper); to do so, it begins by reaching back to references in European and American writings of the eighteenth century. One of the main motivations behind the associations between Native Americans and the Ancient World made in the early decades of the nineteenth century was to “elevate” Indians in order to transform them into worthy symbols of the recently established United States. Such associations also rendered them suitable subjects for treatment by authors inspired to a large extent by the Romantic Moveme…

“Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie and the Ambiguous Afterlife of the History of the Acadians”
Abstract Longfellow’s Evangeline was hailed as a great and distinctively American work when it appeared in 1847, and the poem’s use of North American history was a key element in its favourable reception. This use of history, however, is ambiguous and complex. The epic continues, first of all, in a long tradition of romanticized retellings of the heart-rending story of the Acadians. But the work also engages in a dual-level dialogue with both the mid-eighteenth-century history of the Acadians, who are pitied, without inciting indignation, and the contemporary history of midnineteenth-century America, whose expansionism it both implicitly celebrates and criticizes. Resume Evangeline, le poem…

The title compound, [Er(Dmp)(C5H4Me)2] (Dmp = 2,6-Mes2C6H3, with Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) or [Er(C6H7)2(C24H25)], was obtained by the reaction of LiDmp with Er(C5H4Me)3. The Er atom is η5-coordinated by two methylcyclopentadienyl ligands (average Er⋯centroid distance = 2.341 A) and η1-coordinated by the ipso-C atom of the aryl substituent [Er—C = 2.434 (4) A]. An additional π-arene contact with one of the Mes groups [Er⋯C = 3.077 (4) A] gives rise to the pyramidalization of the metal-atom environment.
A sterically crowded triazene: 1,3-bis(3,5,3′′,5′′-tetramethyl-1,1′:3′;1′′-terphenyl-2′-yl)triazene
A tetranuclear organorhenium(i) complex of the 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane radical anion, TCNQF4˙−
The radical complex {(mu(4)-TCNQF4)[Re(CO)(3)(bpy)](4)}(PF(6))(3), as prepared and isolated from the reaction between TCNQF4 and [Re(CO)(3)(bpy)(MeOH)](PF(6)), was studied electrochemically and by IR vibrational spectroscopy, UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, and by EPR at 9.5, 190 and 285 GHz. The isotropic g factor of 2.0058, the detectable g anisotropy, and the (185,187)Re EPR hyperfine coupling of 0.95 mT for four equivalent metal nuclei support predominant, but not exclusive, spin localisation at the bridging ligand. Nitrile and metal carbonyl stretching frequencies as well as the typically structured near infrared absorption band lend further support to (TCNQF4 (-))(Re(I))(4) as the…

Heterotetranuclear Complexes of Reduced and Non-reduced Bridging 1,2,4,5-Tetrazine Ligands with 1,1′-Bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-ferrocene-copper(I)
The complexes {(μ-bptz)[Cu(dppf)]2}(BF4)2 [(1)(BF4)2] [bptz = 3,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine, dppf = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ferrocene] and {(μ-bpztz)[Cu(dppf)]2}(PF6)2 [(2)(PF6)2] [bpztz = 3,6-bis(2-pyrazinyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine] contain two redox-active heterodinuclear FeIICuI moieties, bridged by a redox-active ligand. A crystal structure determination of (1)(BF4)2·2CH2Cl2 confirms the non-reduced aromatic nature of the bridge, in contrast to previous results on dicopper(I) complexes of bptz. Facile one-electron reduction produces the radical complexes {(μ-bptz)[Cu(dppf)]2}+ (1+) and {(μ-bpztz)[Cu(dppf)]2}+ (2+), which could be isolated [as (1)(BF4)] and studied by variable freq…
“Allochronic Views of Native Americans; or, Vanished Vanishing Indians in The Last of the Mohicans”
James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans; A Narrative of 1757, first published in 1826, offers an archetypal example, perhaps the archetypal example, of a literary expression of the trope of the Vanishing Indian. This theme is present in many works of nineteenth-century American literature that include Native Americans as their subjects, but Cooper’s romance, whose very title evokes the disappearance of an entire tribe, takes the sad fate of North America’s indigenous peoples as one o...
