Is the Theory of Entrepreneurship Applicable to Franchising?

This essay takes an entrepreneurship viewpoint toward franchising. The applicability of the general theory of entrepreneurship presented by Shane (“A general theory of entrepreneurship. The individual-opportunity nexus”. Edward Elgar, Cheltenham, 2003) is explored in the franchising context. Shane introduced a model of the entrepreneurial process in response to the failure of prior research to provide one. According to Shane, prior research has tended to look at only part of the entrepreneurial process, with the result that no general theory of entrepreneurship has been developed. Entrepreneurial Processes of the Finnish Franchisee Training Program’s Graduates

The current study reports the results of the third and final phase of the longitudinal study on trainees of the Finnish franchisee training program. The study targeted the 46 respondents who in the previous phases indicated that they became either franchisees or self-employed in stand-alone businesses after graduation. The purpose of the study was to find out what factors influenced the respondents’ entrepreneurial decision-making processes and what role the training program played in these processes. Finnish Franchisee Training Program — Findings from the First Ten Programs 1999–2001

The Finnish franchisee training program is a unique training because it is given to prospective franchisees by a third party. The program aims to find people interested in franchising and to give them the essential skills and knowledge a franchisee needs. Additional goal is to help the trainees to choose a franchise. In total, more than 200 trainees graduated from the first ten programs held in 1999–2001. The graduates comprise the samples of the current study. The data was collected in two separate phases. Franchisee Discontinuance and Failure Empirical Findings from Finland

The present study focuses on franchisee discontinuances and failures during 1999–2001. The paper deals with notions relating to discontinuance and failure. Franchising is approached from entrepreneurs hip viewpoint and taken as a form of starting and conducting entrepreneurship and business. The study was carried out in 2002 in Finland. The 46 member franchisors of the Finnish Franchising Association (FFA) were surveyed. Altogether 33 responses were received, adding up to a response rate of 72%. The organizing parties were the Finnish Employment and Economic Development Centres and a private consultation company specialized in franchising.
