Suicide is a global public health problem. Media impact on suicide is well confirmed and there are several recommendations on how media should and should not report on suicide to minimize the risk of copycat behavior. Those media guidelines have been developed to improve responsible reporting on suicide (RRS). Content Analysis as a Research Method: A Content Analysis of Content Analyses in Sport Communication

Content analysis is a popular method in communication and media research. However, to what extent and in which contexts it is used in sport communication research has hardly been investigated. In order to provide empirically grounded insight, the authors conducted a quantitative content analysis of scholarly journal articles using content analysis as a research method, focusing on three major international sport communication journals during the 10 years between 2010 and 2019 (N = 267). The Press Coverage of Celebrity Suicide and the Development of Suicide Frequencies in Germany

The existence of the so-called "Werther effect" is well confirmed, and there are several recommendations on how the media should (not) report suicide to minimize the risk of copycat behavior. Unfortunately, very little is known about how suicide is actually reported. The article examines the German press coverage of six celebrity suicides with respect to compliance with guidelines on suicide reporting and analyzes changes in suicides in the wake of the reporting. It concludes that German media do not respect the recommendations in a substantial number of their articles. In addition, a significant increase in suicides and similar suicides is found.
Construct Validity and Population-Based Norms of the German Brief Resilience Scale (BRS).

Abstract. The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) measures the ability to recover from stress. To provide further evidence for construct validity of the German BRS and to determine population-based norms, a large sample (N = 1,128) representative of the German adult population completed a survey including the BRS and instruments measuring perceived stress and the resilience factors optimism, self-efficacy, and locus of control. Confirmatory factor analyses showed best model fit for a five-factor model differentiating the ability to recover from stress from the three resilience factors. Methode Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick zum aktuellen Forschungsstand und beleuchtet methodische Probleme der Prävalenzforschung in Deutschland. Angesichts von jahrlich mehr als 800.000 Todesfallen weltweit, davon mehr als 10.000 in Deutschland, kommt wirkungsvollen Masnahmen zur Suizidpravention auf nationaler wie internationaler Ebene entscheidende Bedeutung zu. Die Kommunikation uber Suizide gilt dabei zum einen als Risikofaktor, zum anderen als Moglichkeit, Suizide zu verhindern. Der Beitrag nahert sich diesem Spannungsfeld zwischen „Werther-“ und „Papageno-Effekt“, beschreibt theoretische Hintergrunde, Forschungsstand und Implikationen und leitet Empfehlungen fur die Kommunikations- und Medienpraxis ab.
