Analysis of compressor architectures in MOS current-mode logic

This paper is concerned with the design and the comparison of different compressor architectures for high performance multipliers in MOS current-mode logic (MCML). More specifically, three architectures have been designed for 3-2, 4-2 and 5-2 compressors and two architectures for 7-2 compressors. The various implementations for each type of compressor have been compared one another. This investigation indicates that the architectures based exclusively on three-level MCML gates are the most suitable for MCML implementation in terms of speed, power consumption and area. Design guidelines are provided to improve compressor performance. All the compressors were designed in a TSMC 180nm CMOS tec…

A delay model valid in all the regions of operation of the MOS transistor for the energy-efficient design of MCML gates

This paper presents a novel delay model for MCML circuits valid in all the regions of operation of the MOS transistor, i.e., weak inversion (sub-threshold), moderate inversion (near-threshold) and strong inversion. The proposed delay model was employed to develop an automated methodology for the energy-efficient design of such circuits. The tradeoff that can be realized between energy and delay was investigated. Experiments were performed using different technologies to understand the impact of technology scaling on that tradeoff too. Major results of this study are as follows. In a circuit designed for minimum energy consumption, the minimum energy point occurs in the near-threshold region…

A Local Selection Algorithm for Switching Function Minimization

The minimization algorithms which do not require any preliminary generation of all the prime implicants (PI's) of a function are the most efficient. In this work a new algorithm is described which follows such an approach. It is based on a local selection of PI's carried out by examining a set of vertices whose number is never greater than the number of PI's of a minimum cost cover. This algorithm takes advantage of a technique which uses numerical equivalents of the function vertices as pointers. For this reason it is well suited for implementation by computer. To illustrate the features of this algorithm a few examples are reported.

Power-aware design of MCML logarithmic adders

This paper describes the low-power design of a MOS current-mode logarithmic adder. The adder utilizes the Brent-Kung tree structure. The design strategy adopted is very simple and effective. Moreover, it can be utilized also for other types of logarithmic adders. To validate it, several adders were designed in a TSMC CMOS 130nm technology. Results of simulations indicate that the proposed methodology offers a good starting point before fine-tuning the design by SPICE simulations. Finally, the tradeoff that can be realized between performance and power consumption is discussed.

A numerical method for imaging of biological microstructures by VHF waves

Imaging techniques give a fundamental support to medical diagnostics during the pathology discovery as well as for the characterization of bio-medical structures. The imaging methods involve electromagnetic waves in a frequency range that spans from some Hz to GHz and over. Most of these methods involve ionizing waves and scanning of a large human body area even if only a focused inspection is needed. In this paper, a numerical method to evaluate the shape of microstructures for application in the medical field, with a very low invasiveness for the human body, is proposed. In particular, the tooth’s root canal is considered. In fact, this is one of the hot topics in the endodontic procedure…
