Modulation of folic acid bioaccessibility by encapsulation in pH-responsive gated mesoporous silica particles

[EN] A study on the controlled release of folic acid (FA) from pH-responsive gated mesoporous silica particles (MSP) is reported. The MCM-41 support was synthesized using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as hydrolytic inorganic precursor and the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as porogen species. Calcination of the mesostructured phase resulted in the starting solid. This solid was loaded with FA to obtain the initial support S0. Moreover, this FA-loaded material was further functionalized with 3-[2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyltrimethoxysilane (N3) in order to obtain the gated polyamine-functionalised material S1. Solids S0 and S1 were characterized using standar…

Protective effect of mesoporous silica particles on encapsulated folates.

Mesoporous silica particles (MSPs) are considered suitable supports to design gated materials for the encapsulation of bioactive molecules. Folates are essential micronutrients which are sensitive to external agents that provoke nutritional deficiencies. Folates encapsulation in MSPs to prevent degradation and to allow their controlled delivery is a promising strategy. Nevertheless, no information exists about the protective effect of MSPs encapsulation to prevent their degradation. In this work, 5-formyltetrahydrofolate (FO) and folic acid (FA) were entrapped in MSPs functionalized with polyamines, which acted as pH-dependent molecular gates. The stability of free and entrapped vitamins af…

IMPACT OF THE "COMUNICAT" METHODOLOGY ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE "EFFECTIVE ORAL COMMUNICATION" STUDENT OUTCOME OF THE STUDENTS OF THE MASTER IN FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY MANAGEMENT

[EN] During academic course 2017-2018 the Comunica't methodology was created to help students to self-learn all the skills needed to master the areas of domain of the general student outcome effective oral communication. After two academic years of implementation, the goal of this work is to analyse the degree of contribution of this methodology to development of the "Effective Oral Communication students outcome of students that followed the methodology during the subject Audits of Food Safety and Quality Systems, belonging to the Master in Food Safety and Quality Management. To this end, at the beginning of the subject, students were asked to present a topic related to the subject and eva…

Double Drug Delivery Using Capped Mesoporous Silica Microparticles for the Effective Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

[EN] Silica mesoporous microparticles loaded with both rhodamine B fluorophore (S1) or hydrocortisone (S2), and capped with an olsalazine derivative, are prepared and fully characterized. Suspensions of Si and S2 in water at an acidic and a neutral pH show negligible dye/drug release, yet a notable delivery took place when the reducing agent sodium dithionite is added because of hydrolysis of an azo bond in the capping ensemble. Additionally, olsalazine fragmentation induced 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) release. In vitro digestion models show that S1 and S2 solids are suitable systems to specifically release a pharmaceutical agent in the colon. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies in rats show …

ACTIVITIES TO PROMOTE THE SELF-LEARNING OF THE EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION STUDENT OUTCOME

[EN] Universities all over the world are implementing a competence-based type of teaching and learning to guarantee certain student learning outcomes at the end of the studies. To reach these student outcomes, active methodologies should be included in teaching practice at the same time that carefully designed rubrics might be used for the evaluation of the students. Despite the fact that teachers introduce more and more authentic tasks in the classroom, these activities are not still well employed by all the University teaching staff. The goal of this work is to propose a guideline of activities to promote the self-learning of the effective communication outcome by the students. For that p…

Stability of different mesoporous silica particles during an in vitro digestion

Mesoporous silica materials have the ability to entrap drugs, nutrients and functional biomolecules and can be able to act as smart delivery systems capable to control and target the release of their cargo in a particular part of the gastrointestinal tract when administrated orally. However, the aptness of these encapsulation supports in in vivo oral controlled release relies on their chemical stability through the digestive tube. In this context, we have evaluated the stability of four different mesoporous silica particles, frequently used as encapsulating supports, during an in vitro digestion process comprising buccal, stomach and intestinal phases. Results showed that after 4 h of diges…

Encapsulation of folic acid in different silica porous supports: A comparative study.

Although folic acid is essential to numerous bodily functions, recent research indicates that a massive exposition to the vitamin could be a double-edged sword. In this study, the capacity of different caped mesoporous silica particles (i.e. Hollow Silica Shells, MCM-41, SBA-15 and UVM-7) to dose FA during its passage through the gastrointestinal tract has been evaluated. Results confirmed that the four capped materials were capable to hinder the delivery of FA at low pH (i.e. stomach) as well as able to deliver great amounts of the vitamin at neutral pH (i.e. intestine). Nevertheless, the encapsulation efficiency and the deliver kinetics differed among supports. While supports with large p…

Application of a self-learning methodology for the enhancement of the oral communication student outcome in International Business studies

[EN] Effective oral communication is one of the most demanded student outcomes in the labour market, especially for degree students on International Business. Although this outcome is usually evaluated in several subjects along the curriculum, it is barely worked neither inside nor outside the classroom, mainly due to lack of time and to unavailability of proper learning methodologies. The PIMECOE project, an innovation and educational improvement project on this matter, has developed a self-learning methodology on the Effective Oral Communication student outcome, in which auto-diagnosis tests, selflearning tools and peer assessments are conveniently combined to enhance the proficiency leve…

Satisfaction analysis of 'food safety and quality management' master degree's students with the 'comunicat' methodology for the enhancement of the 'effective oral comunication' student outcome

The main goal of the present study is to analyze the satisfaction level of the students from the master degree "Food Safety and Quality Management" with the "ComunicaT" methodology, which was applied to improve the mastery level of the "Effective Oral Communication" student outcome. This methodology is being developed under an innovative and educational improvement research project funded by the Universitat Politècnica de València, and the general idea behind it is that the student, after performing an auto-diagnosis test, becomes capable to autonomously improve its oral communication skills. Thereby, the student, starting from his initial mastery level on this student outcome, follows a se…
