COMBINED USE OF INNOVATIVE PASSIVE CONTROL DEVICES AND CONVENTIONAL BASE ISOLATION STRATEGIES

2021

This manuscript contains the main part of my research performed in the last three years at the Department of Engineering, University of Palermo, at the Department of Basic Sciences in Engineering Sciences (Unit of Applied Mechanics), University of Innsbruck, Austria and at the company FIP Mec, Selvazzano Dentro, Padova. Within the research framework of Structural Control, this dissertation proposes novel passive control strategies to mitigate the dynamic response of base isolated structural systems. Among the several types of devices proposed in literature, Tuned Mass Dampers and Tuned Liquid Column Dampers are undoubtedly the most widely employed vibration control devices for coupling with…

2021

In meetings between the silversmiths Pietro Accardi and Silvano Barraja with Luciana Macaluso, professor of architectural design, the events that reduced the church of San Eligio in Palermo to ruins were retraced and a different destiny for the monument has been envisioned. The church was built by the silversmith confraternity in 1650 and dedicated to their patron saint, a silversmith of French origins. The earthquake of 15 January 1940 damaged the structure and, three years later, a bomb destroyed the roof of the main body. During the 1950s, the shops in the square of the same name multiplied to the point of occupying part of the church. The subsequent decline in craft activities and the g…

2021

Ovid’s production of exile reveals a different look at the city: a ‘mental image’ that dialogues with the rhetorical codification of the laudes urbium and, at the same time, selects the places that best celebrate the monumentality of Augustan Rome. Of particular interest is the description of the monumental complex on the Palatine Hill (Tr. 3, 1), inside which the protagonist (the liber) follows an itinerary that leads him directly from the Forum to the Palatium and its library. The library-curia, commissioned by Augustus, a political and cultural emblem, as well as a religious one, of the regime is a part of a monumental complex conceived as the new seat of power and represented a few year…

SICILIAN MANGO PEEL INDUCES CELLULAR STRESS ACCOMPANIED TO MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION IN COLON CANCER CELLS

2021

Currently, cellular stresses as the oxidative, metabolic and genotoxic stress are considered the cause of many different human pathologies as neurodegenerative diseases (e.g.,Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), alcoholic liver disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and also cancer. Although the role of cellular stress has been largely debated in cancer, nowadays some therapies aim to target the intracellular pro-oxidant/anti-oxidant balance triggering the tumor commitment to cell death. Therefore, it has become more necessary an improved understanding of cancer response to cellular stress that could be advantageous to develop cancer tailored therapies. In this…

2021

In 1932 a "dictatorship of doctors" (Salazar) emerged in Portugal: the cathedocracy. This neologism crosses the words kathedra (καθέδρα: seat/chair) and kratein, derived from kratos (κράτος), which implies the idea of a power that has its source in itself. Sovereign power is thus handed over to a learned and wise class which offers as a guarantee its profession, that of university professor, and its degree, that of doctor, most often in law. The constitutionalism that the regime engenders has an astonishing nature, although grafted onto the monarchical heritage of the granted constitutionalis of the 19th century. In order to counter pagan Caesarism and Hegelianism, the doctrine seeks to mak…

On the conversation between female videobloggers and commentators

2021

2021

The regime of the execution of the sentence is analyzed, starting from the powers of declarative and executive substitution of the contentious-administrative judge. It begins with the reference to the constitutional guidelines of the administrative process. Then, the different modalities of judicial substitution are described in the types of sentences (declarative, constitutive and conviction) regulated in the project, to then refer to the regime of executive seizure of public goods. It ends by describing: the powers granted to the judge to agree indirect measures that assist with the execution of the judgment, the cases of impossibility of execution and the extension of the sentence to thi…

HR scenario game : Learning human resource management in a virtual environment

2021

This paper introduces a computer-based online scenario game that was developed to enhance the learning of human resource management (HRM) in an undergraduate course at a business school in Finland. What makes this game unique is that students played an important and active role in developing the game in collaboration with lecturers. Our findings show that the game enhances learning, interaction, and collaboration among students. We discuss how computer-based games and their development in collaboration with students can be used as a means for learning and improving working-life skills in higher education.

Antecedents and consequences of problematic smartphone use: A systematic literature review of an emerging research area

2021

Abstract This article provides a systematic review of existing research on problematic smartphone use (PSU) to guide other researchers in search of relevant studies, and to propose areas for future research. In total, 293 studies were analyzed leading to the development of an overview model in the field of PSU, presenting findings on demographic factors, explanations for smartphone use and why this use becomes problematic, consequences of PSU, and how such use can be corrected. In addition, we considered in which contexts, with which methods, and with which theoretical lenses this stream of research has been studied to date. Smartphone use is most often explained by the smartphone design, a…

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder in adult renal transplant recipients: case series and review of literature

2021

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is serious life-threating complication of transplantation. The clinical picture differs from lymphomas observed in the general population, with different manifestation, histopathology, higher aggressiveness with involvement of sites beyond the primary lymph node, and poorer outcome. The objective of the study was to present nine cases of PTLD observed in our centre among the kidney transplant recipient population and discuss the results with up-to-date literature. We performed a retrospective single-centre assessment of PTLD incidence in the cohorts of kidney transplant recipients followed by our centre. We found nine cases of PTLD, five m…

Compliance, practices, and attitudes towards VTIs (Vehicle Technical Inspections) in Spain: What prevents Spanish drivers from checking up their cars?

2021

Objective Mechanical conditions of vehicles may play a determinant role in driving safety, the reason why vehicle periodical technical inspections (VTIs) are mandatory in many countries. However, the high number of drivers sanctioned for not complying with this regulation is surprisingly high, and there is not much evidence on what kind(s) of motives may explain this concerning panorama. This study aimed to identify the aspects that modulate the relationship between complying (or not) with VTI’s standards in a nationwide sample of Spanish drivers. The study design also addressed the drivers’ awareness regarding different risky behaviors while driving, depending on their sex and their crash…

Zabezpieczenia akcesoryjne w kredytowaniu konsorcjalnym - problem separacji podmiotowej

2021

Rewilding Language Education: Emergent Assemblages and Entangled Actions

2021

Integrating concepts and techniques from ethnomethodology and sociomaterialism, this article investigates the observable material processes involving human action and place‐based contexts of language use enabled by locative media. The focal pedagogical intervention utilized mobile augmented reality (AR) activities, the development of which was inspired by research on learning ‘in the wild.’ Applying the principle of reverse engineering, we introduce a pedagogical approach termed ‘rewilding’ for its emphasis on designing supportive conditions for goal‐directed interaction outside of classrooms. Three instances of AR materials use are presented from an out‐of‐class activity associated with un…

Apoftegmaty Ojców Pustyni. O pamięci oralnej w zapisanych tekstach

2021

The paper analyzes selected apophthegms that are part of two collections: alphabetical and systematic. These texts had initially circulated in oral transmission between 330–460 AD and were written down in the mid-fifth century. In this form they are available up until today. The purpose of the analysis at hand is to try to find traces of oral transmission in the apophthegms, which has been attempted by considering the rather rich literature on oral cultures and oral transmission. The studies by E. A. Havelock, J. Goody, and W. B. Ong have proven most useful here. Oral memory in the recorded apophthegms was discerned at the level of the text itself, its form, structure, composition, the subj…
