Phytochemical investigation and antitumor activity of coumarins from Sicilian accession of Ferulago nodosa (L.) Boiss. roots

2023

Ferulago nodosa (L.) Boiss. (Apiaceae) is a species occurring in the Balkan-Tyrrhenian area being present in Crete, Greece, Albania, and probably in Macedonia. From the roots of this accession of species, not previously investigated, four coumarins, grandivittin, aegelinol benzoate, felamidin and aegelinol, and two terpenoids, (2E)-3-methyl-4-[(3-methyl-1-oxo-2-buten-1yl)oxy]-2-butenoic acid and pressafonin-A, were isolated and spectroscopically characterized. The last one was never detected in Ferulago species. The evaluation of the anti-tumor effects of F. nodosa coumarins on colon cancer HCT116 cells showed only a modest effect on reduction of tumor cell viability. For aegelinol, the red…

Comparison between SiC and GaN switching devices in fast-recharging systems for electric vehicles

2023

Recently, the improvement of the semiconductor devices to achieve higher efficiency and higher power density has risen to interest. Si carbide and gallium nitride offer faster switching frequency and lower losses; however, the knowledge of the behaviour of these devices is not mature. In this paper, a system for fast charging of batteries for electric vehicles based on an isolated DC-DC converter equipped with both SiC and GaN devices is presented and an interesting experimental comparison among these two technologies will be given in terms of dynamic performances, electromagnetic compatibility, stability, efficiency, and so on.

Synthesis, X-ray Structure of Two Hexa-Coordinated Ni(II) Complexes with s-Triazine Hydrazine Schiff Base Ligand

2023

The hydrazine s-triazine ligand (E)-4,4’-(6-(2-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)dimorpholine (DMPT) was used to synthesize two new Ni(II) complexes via a self-assembly technique. The two complexes were synthesized by a one-pot synthesis strategy and characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis to be [Ni(DMPT)(H2O)3](NO3)2.3H2O (1) and [Ni(DMPT)(H2O)3](NO3)2.H2O (2). The structures of both complexes were very similar regarding the coordination sphere and counter anions, but differ only in the number of the crystal water molecules. In the case of complex 1, there are three water molecules instead of one H2O molecu…

Erenumab and Possible CGRP Effect on Chronotype in Chronic Migraine: A Real-Life Study of 12 Months Treatment

2023

The introduction of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) directed against the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), or its receptor (CGRPr), revolutionized migraine management due to their high efficacy and few side effects. Data suggest that the CGRP may even be implicated in circadian rhythm, but studies about the effect of anti-CGRP treatments on sleep are still lacking. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of erenumab (70 and 140 mg per month), a human mAb directed against CGRPr, on chronotype in chronic migraineurs; secondly, we assessed its efficacy, safety, and the effects on anxiety and depression. Sleep was evaluated using self-administrable questionnaires investigating …

Developing response-ability in human-wasp encounters

2023

Learning to live with unloved others is crucial in the ecological crisis. Unloved wasps are feared and disliked for their sting. Understanding of their ecological importance is increasing, however. Human-wasp encounters are changing with environmental changes, and strategies for multispecies cohabitation are needed. This multispecies study highlights features of wasp biology affecting human-wasp encounters and analyzes how conflicted human-wasp relations could be mitigated. The geographical focus is Finland, in the Northern boreal region. Biological analysis specified spatiotemporal aspects affecting human-wasp encounters: human and wasp habitats and preferences overlap ubiquitously. From a…

Moving mass over a viscoelastic system: asymptotic behaviours and insights into nonlinear dynamics

2023

AbstractMoving masses are of interest in many applications of structural dynamics, soliciting in the last decades a vast debate in the scientific literature. However, despite the attention devoted to the subject, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is a lack of analysis about the fate of a movable mass when it rolls or slips with friction on a structure. With the aim of elucidating the dynamics of the simplest paradigm of this system and to investigate its asymptotic response, we make reference to a two-degree-of-freedom model made of an elastically vibrating carriage surmounted by a spherical mass, facing the problem both theoretically and experimentally. In case of linear systems…

Inference of the Life Cycle of Environmental Phages from Genomic Signature Distances to Their Hosts

2023

The environmental impact of uncultured phages is shaped by their preferred life cycle (lytic or lysogenic). However, our ability to predict it is very limited. We aimed to discriminate between lytic and lysogenic phages by comparing the similarity of their genomic signatures to those of their hosts, reflecting their co-evolution. We tested two approaches: (1) similarities of tetramer relative frequencies, (2) alignment-free comparisons based on exact k = 14 oligonucleotide matches. First, we explored 5126 reference bacterial host strains and 284 associated phages and found an approximate threshold for distinguishing lysogenic and lytic phages using both oligonucleotide-based methods. The an…

The Riverine Organism Drift Imager: A new technology to study organism drift in rivers and streams

2023

1. Drift or downstream dispersal is a fundamental process in the life cycle of many riverine organisms. In the face of rapidly declining freshwater biodiversity, there is a need to enhance our capacity to study the drift of riverine organisms, by overcoming the limitations of traditional labour-intensive sampling methods that result in data of low temporal and spatial resolution. 2. To address this need, we developed a new technology, the Riverine Organism Drift Imager (RODI), which combines in situ imaging with machine-learning classification. This technique expands on the traditional methodology by replacing the collection cup of a drift net with a camera system that continuously images r…

Winnicott and the (un)integrated self

2023

The capacity to relax and letting one's mind wander is one of the cornerstones of psychoanalysis. In cases where this capacity seems hindered, the reasons are characteristically sought from particular and specific inhibitions: what is thereby taken to be interfered is not the capacity of relaxation but only the activation of this capacity in a particular regard. In contrast to this mainstream way of thinking, Winnicott argues that the capacity for mental relaxation is a developmental achievement and presupposes a safe sense of integration. The present article investigates this dynamism. It clarifies how an integral sense of self arises out of primary unintegration, explains how a well-estab…

Novel insights into cancer stem cells targeting: CAR-T therapy and epigenetic drugs as new pillars in cancer treatment

2023

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) represent the most aggressive subpopulation present in the tumor bulk retaining invasive capabilities, metastatic potential and high expression levels of drug efflux pumps responsible for therapy resistance. Cancer is still an incurable disease due to the inefficacy of standard regimens that spare this subpopulation. Selective targeting of CSCs is still an unmet need in cancer research field. Aberrant epigenetic reprogramming promotes the initiation and maintenance of CSCs, which are able to escape the immune system defense. Promising therapeutic approaches able to induce the selective inhibition of this stem-like small subset include immunotherapy alone or in combi…

Forhandlinger Med Omkostninger. Muslimske Foregangskvinner i Den Norske Offentligheten.

2023

The last few years an increasing number of Muslim women have found a clear voice in the public sphere in Norway. Research into Islam confirms that Muslims, especially Muslim women, are presented in media in a way that is unrecognizable to themselves. The debates in the media surrounding Islam, especially the hijab controversy in both 2004 and 2009, have centered around gender equality, collective peer pressure vs individual freedom, and the urge to be made visible vs invisibility. This article explores how Muslim women in the public sphere in Norway negotiate identity in a partially contradictory dichotomy. Applying the perspective of theory on cultural studies, I will demonstrate how women…

La testimonianza scritta nel processo tributario

2023

Chromosome Painting in Cercopithecus petaurista (Schreber, 1774) Compared to Other Monkeys of the Cercopithecini Tribe (Catarrhini, Primates)

2023

The Cercopithecini tribe includes terrestrial and arboreal clades whose relationships are controversial, with a high level of chromosome rearrangements. In order to provide new insights on the tribe’s phylogeny, chromosome painting, using the complete set of human syntenic probes, was performed in Cercopithecus petaurista, a representative species of the Cercopithecini tribe. The results show C. petaurista with a highly rearranged karyotype characterized by the fission of human chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, and 12. These results compared with the literature data permit us to confirm the monophyly of the Cercopithecini tribe (fissions of chromosomes 5 and 6), as previously proposed by ch…

The Impact of Omnichannel Strategies on Franchisee-Franchisor Relationship Quality

2023

International audience; While omnichannel strategies have become increasingly ubiquitous in franchising, there is a dearth of academic research on how franchisees perceive omnichannel retailing and how the latter impacts the franchise relationship. Yet, the rise of omnichannel strategies could modify the relationship between the franchisor and the franchisees in different ways. For instance, the diversity of channels could reduce the ability of franchisors to monitor their franchisees and could empower the latter (Lee et al., 2019). Some channels, mainly the brand’s website, could introduce new forms of intra-brand competition between the franchisor and franchisees’ units (Bridges, 2017; Cl…

Sustained attention required for effective dimension-based retro-cue benefit in visual working memory

2023

In visual working memory (VWM) tasks, participants’ performances can be improved through the use of dimension-based retro-cues, which direct internal attention to prioritize a particular dimension (e.g., color or orientation) of VWM representations even after the stimuli disappear. This phenomenon is known as the dimension-based retro-cue benefit (RCB). The present study investigates whether sustained attention is required for the dimension-based RCB by inserting interference or interruption between the retro-cue and the test array to distract attention. We tested the effects of perceptual interference or cognitive interruption on dimension-based RCB when the interference (Experiments 1 and…

Ferritin Metabolism Reflects Multiple Myeloma Microenvironment and Predicts Patient Outcome

2023

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic malignancy with a multistep evolutionary pattern, in which the pro-inflammatory and immunosuppressive microenvironment and genomic instability drive tumor evolution. MM microenvironment is rich in iron, released by pro-inflammatory cells from ferritin macromolecules, which contributes to ROS production and cellular damage. In this study, we showed that ferritin increases from indolent to active gammopathies and that patients with low serum ferritin had longer first line PFS (42.6 vs. 20.7 months and, p = 0.047, respectively) and OS (NR vs. 75.1 months and p = 0.029, respectively). Moreover, ferritin levels correlated with systemic inflammation markers …

Dealing with missing participants in the opening phases of a videoconference

2023

Abstract The paper explores the social interaction that takes place during the initial phases of videoconferences. The focus is on the problem of absent participants, which is often considered a reason for delaying the official beginning of the meeting. One of the resources that the participants have is to reach the absent participant by cellphone. We observed a recurrent pattern of action whereby one of the participants disengages from the video meeting to reach the missing person by phone. This negotiation process moves through four steps: (1) the detection of the problem, (2) the offer to call the missing person by one participant, (3) the acceptance of this offer by the moderator, and (…

On conditional probabilities and their canonical extensions to Boolean algebras of compound conditionals

2023

In this paper we investigate canonical extensions of conditional probabilities to Boolean algebras of conditionals. Before entering into the probabilistic setting, we first prove that the lattice order relation of every Boolean algebra of conditionals can be characterized in terms of the well-known order relation given by Goodman and Nguyen. Then, as an interesting methodological tool, we show that canonical extensions behave well with respect to conditional subalgebras. As a consequence, we prove that a canonical extension and its original conditional probability agree on basic conditionals. Moreover, we verify that the probability of conjunctions and disjunctions of conditionals in a rece…
