Chlorophyll fluorescence as a tool for management of plant resources

1994

Abstract Light-induced chlorophyll fluorescence has become a tool which has ever-increasing potential application to experimental plant physiology. The effects of frost, heat, and drought have been analyzed using the kinetics of individual leaves of two representative types of life form: an evergreen tree (holm oak) dominant in the Mediterranean Basin and an annual cultivated legume (soybean). Various indices were used to quantify their response to environmental stress. Canopy fluorescence for the two types of plants was simulated. For two levels of measurement, leaf or canopy, light-induced fluorescence appears to be helpful for forest or crop management in the Mediterranean area.

Fracturas de húmero complicadas con lesión arterial

1994

1994

Efficiency of financial markets is one of the most studied subject in theoretical finance. Formalization of this idea is realised by the random walk model. Numerous tests have been developped to validate the hypothesis of identically and independantly distributed innovations. But the results of empirical works are not unanimous ; the acceptation of the random walk is not systematic and depend too much on sample features. This constatation leads us to study the impact of the sample frequency on empirical results by distinguishing two different methodologies of tests : the first one is based on unit root (DICKEY et FULLER 1979, 1981) and the other one on variance ratio (LO et MACKINLAY 1988).…

Observation of monojet events and tentative interpretation

1994

Abstract A data sample corresponding to almost two million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP has been searched for monojet events. Three events were found, in agreement with the expectation from the process e + e − → γ * v v ¯ , with γ * → f f ¯ . Two events are hadronic, the third one being an e + e − pair. All monojet masses are in excess of 3 GeV/ c 2 , and two of the event have large transverse momenta: 18.5 and 20.3 GeV/ c . These kinematic characteristics are quite unlikely in the process e + e − → γ * v v ¯ . The probability of their occurence increases substantially when processes involving further Z or W exchanges are taken into account, but still remains at …

Shape analysis for image retrieval

1994

The main aim of this paper is to describe a method for locating a subimage of a stored image that approximately matches a given query image. This matching can support naive users in accessing an image database according to image contents rather symbolic attributes. The query image can be either composed using painting tools or cuts out of an actual scanned image. Our method is based on the extraction of features from the query image and from the stored images. The following three steps are involved: (l) an ISODATA algorithm is applied to segment (into region) both the query image and the stored images; (2) the normalized moment and geometrica! features are computed from the segmented region…

The Effect of Erythropoietin on Tumor Oxygenation in Normal and Anemic Rats

1994

Anemia associated with malignancy is a common clinical problem. Its etiology is varied and includes nutritional causes, hemorrhage, hemolysis, bone marrow metastasis and hypoplasia, paraneoplastic syndromes, and chemotherapy1, with many patients presenting with anemia even before they receive cytotoxic therapy and even if their bone marrow is not invaded by tumor cells2. The response of tumors to standard radiotherapy and oxygen-dependent chemotherapy in these patients is often less satisfactory than in subjects with normal hemoglobin levels3. This is presumed to be due to the worsening of tumor oxygenation as a result of the decreased oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood in these anemic t…

The Role of Oxygen Tension Distribution on the Radiation Response of Human Breast Carcinoma

1994

The response of tumors to radiation is heterogeneous even in animal tumor systems where tumors all originate from the same cell culture, are implanted in genetically similar age-matched animals in a constant anatomic locationl. Hence great heterogeneity of response exists even in situations where intrinsic genetic or epigenetic factors are minimally variable. Several metabolic factors are known to influence the probability of tumor control after radiation. These metabolic factors are also known to vary widely between tumors in humans2,3 and even in animal tumor models. Heterogeneous variables include tumor oxygen tension distribution, glutathione content, glucose delivery and utilization ra…

Synthesis And Sorptive Properties Of Dodecasil 1 H With An Acessible Pore System

1994

Abstract The synthesis of Dodecasil 1H was studied in the system SiO2/1-adamantylamine/NH3/water with the objective of controlling the particle size and the morphology of the crystals. Since nucleation occurs in a very early stage of the synthesis, the heating rate to the final temperature have a strong influence on both parameters. Using seed crystals and such a heating programme, the expensive template 1-adamantylamine can be reduced to so small amounts, that a nearly template free pore system is achieved. The emptiness of the pore system was demonstrated from adsorption measurement using He and H2.

Homologies Between Different Forms of 2-5A Synthetases

1994

(2′-5′) Oligoadenylate synthetases (2-5A synthetases; EC 2.7.7.19) are present in mammalian cells and tissues and synthesize from ATP a series of oligomers termed 2-5A [general formula: ppp(A2′p)nA; with 1 ≤ n < 18 and usually 1 ≤ n < 6] (Hovanessian 1991). For full enzymic activity of the 2-5A synthetases, binding of double-stranded RNA is required (Sen 1982). Three principal 2-5A synthetase isoenzymes have been described with Mr’s of 40–46, 69, and 100 kDa (Chebath et al. 1987; Hovanessian et al. 1987, 1988). In the following they are classified as 2-5A synthetase I [Mr 40–46 000], II [Mr 69 000] and III [Mr 100 000]. All three isoforms are induced in cells by interferon (Cohen et al. 198…

The Role of Artificial Intelligence Concepts in System Modelling and Simulation: An Overview

1994

The impact of modelling and simulation methodology research on the daily practice of the simulation community is becoming clearly perceivable. The same applies to the application of the artificial intelligence research in a diversity of computer related fields. As both fields are strongly based on models as the main way they convey their knowledge, the fact of synergy caused by combining these two computer related areas comes as a more or less logical consequence. There is an increasing interest of incorporating methods and techniques developed by and for the artificial intelligence community into modelling and simulation methodology and practice. This paper addresses common aspects and dif…

Brain met-enkephalin immunostaining after subacute and subchronic exposure to benzene

1994

Benzene is used in a wide variety of domestic and occupational activities, and due to its lipophilic nature, it accumulates in lipid-rich tissues like the brain. In this sense, neurotoxic action has long been associated with organic solvent exposure and it has been shown that benzene, injected in a single dose or during a prolongued administration, modifies the content of dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin and its main metabolite 5-hydroxy indolacetic acid, in several brain regions of the rat, then revealing a stimulating action on brain monoamine synthesis and turnover. However, information concerning neurotoxic action of benzene exposure in vivo on peptidergic neuromodulatory systems is s…

Role of two operators in regulating the plasmid-borne raf operon of Escherichia coli

1994

The plasmid-borne raf operon encodes functions required for the inducible uptake and utilization of raffinose in Escherichia coli K12. The expression of three structural genes for alpha-galactosidase (rafA), Raf permease (rafB) and sucrose hydrolase (rafD) is negatively controlled by the binding of RafR repressor (rafR) to two operator sites, O1 and O2, that flank the -35 sequence of the raf promoter, PA. In vitro, O1 and O2 are occupied on increasing the concentration of RafR, without detectable preference for one site or the other or any indication of cooperative binding. Nucleotide substitutions at positions 3, 4 or 5 in an operator half-site prevented repressor binding, supporting a mod…

Calculation of shear influences on the phase separation of polymer blends exhibiting upper critical solution temperatures

1994

Calculations were performed on the basis of a generalized Gibbs energy of mixing G γ, which is the sum of the Gibbs energy of mixing of the stagnant system and E s, the energy stored in the system during stationary flow. With increasing shear rate γ, the demixing temperatures shift to lower values (shear-induced mixing; diminution of the heterogeneous area), then to higher values (shear-induced demixing), and finally to lower values again before the effects fade out. The details of the rather complex phase diagrams resulting for a given shear rate are primarily determined by a band in the T/χ plane (χ = mole fraction) within which (∂2 E s/∂χ2) T UCST where they submerge. Solidification behavior of the theta system 2-propanol/poly(n-butyl methacrylate) I. Influences of thermoreversible gelation on stationary flow

1994

Zero shear viscosities, η0, were determined by means of a magnetoviscometer for melts of poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (M = 8.7 to 450 kg/mol, T =53.5 to 200°C) and for concentrated solutions of the highest molecular weight sample in isopropanol (T = 34.8 to 131.5 °C). Master curves can be constructed in both cases if the reference temperature is set proportional to the gelation temperature of the particular fluid. Special intersegmental interactions (eventually leading to thermoreversible gelation) can above all be felt in η0 (T) and in M c , the critical molecular weight determined in plots of log η0 vs. log M. As the temperature is lowered, the behavior changes from WLF to Arrhenius, and M …

Construction and validation of a computer-based diagnostic module on average velocity

1994

This article describes the process of building a computer-based diagnostic module concerning the understanding of the average velocity concept. The first step consists of the production of a student model that takes into account student errors and reasoning paths. The computer module formulates its diagnosis by leading users along different patterns foreseen according to the hypothesized student model. Results are reported concerning a correlation analysis between automatic and human diagnoses.

Derived sets and inductive inference

1994

The paper deals with using topological concepts in studies of the Gold paradigm of inductive inference. They are — accumulation points, derived sets of order α (α — constructive ordinal) and compactness. Identifiability of a class U of total recursive functions with a bound α on the number of mindchanges implies \(U^{(\alpha + 1)} = \not 0\). This allows to construct counter-examples — recursively enumerable classes of functions showing the proper inclusion between identification types: EXα⊂EXα+1.

Metabolic integration in locust flight: the effect of octopamine on fructose 2,6-bisphosphate content of flight muscle in vivo

1994

The biogenic amine octopamine was injected into the haemolymph of 20-days old male locusts,Locusta migratoria, and the content of fructose 2,6-bisphosphate, a potent activator of glycolysis, was measured in the flight muscle after various time. Octopamine brought about a transient increase in fructose 2,6-bisphosphate. After the injection of 10 μl of 10 mmol·l-1 d, l-octopamine fructose 2,6-bisphosphate was increased by 61% within 2 min. Ten minutes after the injection fructose 2,6-bisphosphate was increased to 6.71±0.89 nmol·g-1 flight muscle, almost 300% over the control value. Flight caused fructose 2,6-bisphosphate in flight muscle to decrease, but this decrease was counteracted by octo…
