Proton spin and the cheshire cat principle

1991

Abstract We discuss the proton matrix element of the flavor-singlet axial current (FSAC), often referred to as proton spin, in terms of the chiral bag model with due account of the axial anomaly and quantum number fractionation. We conclude that the contribution due to gluons is significant for large bag radii and that it is crucial in order to establish the Cheshire cat principle.

Classical anomalies of supersymmetric extended objects

1991

Abstract The hamiltonian form of the action for a p-extended supersymmetric object is presented, and used to deduce both the algebra generated by the constraints, in agreement with previous results for p=1,2, and the algebra of the supersymmetry charges. The “anomalous” contributions in each algebra (for given p) are shown to be related, and the origin of their different properties is exhibited. In particular, it is shown why only in the charge algebra are the “anomalous” contributions always topological and the commutators of the translations always zero.

Dactylogyrids on the gills of roach in central Finland: Features of infection and species composition

1991

Monogenean parasites were examined from the gills of 660 roach (Rutilus rutilus) in four interconnected lakes in Central Finland between February and November 1986 and in three of the same lakes between February and December 1988. One of the lakes is eutrophic and polluted due to a paper and pulp mill, one is oligotrophic and in a natural state, and the other two lakes are eutrophic. The prevalence of Dactylogyrus infection was always high. Differences between the lakes and the years were observed in the intensity of infection, which was significantly higher in the polluted lake. The intensity was also higher in older fish. Nine Dactylogyrus species were found, and of these D. crucifer and …

An Unusual Geometry of Five-Coordinate Copper(II): The Structure of Cu(terpy)I2 and Spectroscopic Investigations of Complexes Cu(terpy)X2 (X: I, NCS)

1991

The structure of the compound Cu(terpy)I2 (terpy 2,2′: 6′, 2″ terpyridine) was determined at room temperature. It is monoclinic, space group I2/c with a = 13.689(3), b = 9.510(2), c = 11.605(3) Å, β = 97.59(4)° and Ζ = 4. The copper(II) ions are five-coordinated by the three nitrogen atoms from the terpy ligand and the two iodine atoms. The CuN3I2 polyhedron exhibits the same unusual “reverse” geometry as is observed for Cu(terpy)(NCS)2. Single crystal EPR measurements of the iodide and the isothio-cyanate complexes confirmed the structural results, excluding the possibility of a dynamically averaged geometry.

A second pathway of activation of the Torpedo acetylcholine receptor channel

1991

We have studied the interaction of the reversible acetylcholine esterase inhibitor (-)physostigmine (D-eserine) with the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) from Torpedo marmorata electric tissue by means of ligand-induced ion flux into nAChR-rich membrane vesicles and of equilibrium binding. We find that (-) physostigmine induces cation flux (and also binds to the receptor) even in the presence of saturating concentrations of antagonists of acetylcholine, such as D-tubocurarine, alpha-bungarotoxin or antibody WF6. The direct action on the acetylcholine receptor is not affected by removal of the methylcarbamate function from the drug and thus is not due to carbamylation of the receptor…

Prediction of rapid versus prolonged healing of infective endocarditis by monitoring vegetation size.

1991

The diagnostic value of transesophageal echocardiography in monitoring the clinical course has been evaluated in 83 patients with echocardiographic evidence of infective endocarditis. A total of 103 vegetations attached to the aortic or mitral valves were detected by use of the transesophageal approach. The patients were monitored for a mean of 74 weeks and underwent a minimum of two consecutive transesophageal echocardiographic examinations. Group A included patients with increasing or remaining constant size of vegetation (8.2 +/- 1.5 to 11.2 mm, p less than 0.05) during 4 to 8 weeks of antimicrobial therapy, whereas group B was formed by patients with decreasing vegetation size (8.3 +/- …

Interferon for non-A, non-B chronic hepatitis

1991

Abstract We reviewed randomised clinical trials evaluating the effect of lymphoblastoid or recombinant α-interferon in non-A, non-B chronic hepatitis. The outcomes assessed were the rates of serum alanine aminotransferase normalization and relapse during and after stopping interferon. Data were pooled by meta-analysis and a 50% overall rate difference, favouring treated patients, was found. Results showed homogeneity in direction of treatment effect both after short-term (2–6 months, ≥ 2 mega-units thrice weekly) and long-term (9–18 months, variable dose) interferon course. Moreover, results did not change when type of publication (abstracts vs. full reports) and treatment duration or sched…

A new method in investigations of bubble cluster shapes in two-phase flow

1991

Abstract In this paper a new probabilistic method is used to analyse the distribution of air bubbles in two-phase flow. So far, the method has been applied in astronomy and cosmology to investigate the distribution of galaxies. The basic idea is presented and the method applied to the photographed population of air bubbles in a liquid. The method allows the homogeneity of the flow to be evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively.

17 keV neutrino in a singlet-triplet majoron model

1991

Abstract We investigate the possibility of a cosmologically safe 17 keV neutrino which may have been observed in the decays of tritium, S 35 , and C 14 within a singlet-triplet majoron model. Consideration of the leptonic decay of K + and X rays associated with the radiative decay of massive relic neutrinos severely constrains the scale of the spontaneous lepton number violation. It is argued that the mass density of relic 17 keV neutrinos is constrained as Ω v ⩽ 0.05 h −1 (0.01/ sin 2 θ ) in view of the observed diffuse X ray background.

Superoxide generation by human neutrophils induced by low doses of Escherichia coli hemolysin.

1991

Escherichia coli hemolysin (Hly) was isolated from bacterial culture supernatants by polyethylene glycol precipitation and centrifugation in glycerol density gradients. The toxin preparations contained less than 1 mol of lipopolysaccharide per 10 mol of protein, and they had no fatty acids. The capacity of purified hemolysin to stimulate superoxide anion production in polymorphonuclear leukocytes was monitored kinetically in a lumimeter by using the lucigenin assay and was correlated with the kinetics of transmembrane pore formation. When applied to leukocytes suspended in protein-free buffer, very low concentrations (0.02 to 0.1 HU/ml) of the toxin strongly stimulated the production of sup…

Capillaries within human skeletal muscle fibers.

1991

Internalized capillaries, i.e. capillaries within muscle fibers, represent a rare myopathological feature. This was systematically studied in 923 muscle biopsy specimens and found in 24, chiefly in the gastrocnemius muscle, more rarely in the biceps and quadriceps muscles affecting males more often than females and most frequently associated with juvenile spinal muscular atrophy or Becker's muscular dystrophy. Internalized capillaries, often multiple, ran along the long axis of the muscle fiber within an "internalized" extracellular space and were almost exclusively seen in type I myofibers. Internalization seems to start at the site of fiber splitting while penetration through the intact s…

A dynamic load-balancing algorithm for molecular dynamics simulation on multi-processor systems

1991

Abstract A new algorithm for dynamic load-balancing on multi-processor systems and its application to the molecular dynamics simulation of the spinodal phase separation are presented. The load-balancer is distributed among the processors and embedded in the application itself. Tests performed on a transputer network show that the load-balancer behaves almost ideally in this application. The same approach can be easily extended to different multi-processor topologies or applications.

Evidence for an involvement of NMDA and non-NMDA receptors in synaptic excitation of phrenic motoneurons in the rabbit

1991

Abstract The action of endogenous excitatory amino acids on phrenic motoneurons was studied in anesthetized, vagotomized, paralyzed and artificially ventilated rabbits. The NMDA receptor antagonists APV and ketamine, as well as the non-NMDA receptor antagonists GAMS and DNQX were administered by microinjection into the ventral horn of the spinal segments C3-C5. Injection of each antagonist resulted in a reversible reduction of the phrenic nerve activity. Results suggest an important function of endogenous excitatory amino acids in the excitation of phrenic motneurons. NMDA as well as non-NMDA receptors are involved. The functional role of both receptor types in bulbospinal neurotransmission…

Influence of Microspore Development on Pollen Protoplast Isolation in Digitalis obscura

1991

Summary Protocols for the enzymatic isolation of Digitalis obscura pollen protoplasts are described. The developmental stage of the microspores was a critical factor for successful isolation since protoplasts were obtained only from tetrads. The highest yield of viable protoplasts was achieved with an enzymatic mixture containing helicase, cellulase and pectolyase in 0.5 M sucrose. In different culture techniques employed, cell wall regeneration took place only when protoplasts were plated in agarose drops.

On the shell structure and geometry of monovalent metal clusters

1991

The Huckel model is used to study the electronic structure of monovalent metal clusters. In an fcc cluster the Huckel model gives an estimate to the electronic structure of a free electron cluster. It is shown that the surface faceting of the fcc cluster can destroy the electronic shell structure already when the cluster has about 100 electrons. In the Huckel model the icosahedral structure has smaller total energy than the fcc structures, from which the Wulff construction has the smallest energy already when the cluster has 600 atoms.

Abstract For a finite incidence structure D with a set X of blocks let [ X ] be the number of points common with all blocks contained in X . We define the functions M(t)(B1,…; B1)=ΣB [B1, B]…[B1,B], and, for every partition ϖ = ϖ1,…,ϖ1) of t, the function Mϖ(B1,…,B1) = Σ Πm [Bi | i ϵ Rm], sum over all decompositions {l, …, t} = R1, ⊃ … ⊃ Rl, |Rm| = ϖm. We show: If D is t-fold balanced, then M(t) = Σϖ cϖMϖ, where the, coefficients cϖ are linear combinations of the parameters b1,…,bt, the constant numbers of blocks through any l,…, t distinct points. 1H,13C and17O NMR study of substituted nitropyridines

1991

1H, 13C and 17O NMR spectra for 22 substituted nitropyridines were measured and their 1H NMR spectra were analysed. The most significant variations in the NMR parameters are found for isomeric hydroxy derivatives, owing to the possibility of keto–enol tautomerism. The prevalence of the keto form is observed in 2- and 4-hydroxy derivatives, while the 3-hydroxy derivative exists in its enol form. Among the three nuclei studied, 17O seems to be the best nucleus for probing the keto–enol tautomerism. No correlation is observed between the torsion angle of the nitro group and its 17O NMR chemical shift. Molecular mechanics calculations were performed to clarify the torsional energetics of the ni…

A study of the interaction between iron(III)oxide and titanium(IV)oxide at elevated temperatures

1991

Abstract The bulk interaction between iron(III) oxide and titanium(IV) oxide occurs at temperatures in excess of 773 K. Initially iron(III) ions dissolve in the titanium(IV) oxide structure to produce a substitutional solid solution. Magnetic evidence suggests that there is a solubility limit of iron(III) ions in the region of ca. 3 atom %. Significantly the phase transition from the anatase phase to the rutile phase is observed to occur approximately 200 K lower in the presence of iron than when it is absent. Further reaction between iron(III) oxide and the saturated solution in the rutile phase occurs at 1073 K with the formation of pseudo-brookite. Under high vacuum conditions the therma…

The Nutcracker Syndrome: New Aspects of Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment

1991

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to study vascular anatomy in 3 patients with the nutcracker syndrome and in 10 healthy volunteers. From these studies an abnormal branching of the superior mesenteric artery from the aorta was identified as being the cause of the nutcracker syndrome. Consequently, surgical transposition of the left renal vein to achieve an unobstructed renal venous backflow was performed successfully in 2 patients, while 1 underwent nephrectomy. In 1 patient adjuvant ureteral instrumentation became necessary to aid occlusion of persisting shunts between peripelvic venous varicosities and the urinary tract. 1991

Autoantibodies directed against cytoplasmic antigens of neutrophils (ANCA), especially proteinase 3 (C-ANCA), have proved to be a useful clinical tool to support the diagnosis or to monitor disease activity in Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). Till now, human neutrophil granulocytes have represented the major antigen source used to detect antibodies in WG by the immunofluorescence technique (IFT). We have tested serum samples of 164 patients with different connective tissue diseases (50 suffering from clinically active WG) performing IFT on a human renal cancer line (SK-RC11) and have found antibodies against the nuclear and cytoplasmic antigens in 39 patients. Acute effects of transient vertical whole-body vibration

1991

The question as to whether shock-type whole-body vibration causes increasingly acute strain was investigated. Random vibrations were superimposed with shocks differing in amplitude and in number per unit of time in a systematic manner. The weighted root mean square (rms) acceleration was kept constant in all over the varied experiments. A total of 17 men were exposed to vibration from an electrohydraulic simulator. The following strain criteria were used: biodynamic behavior of the trunk and the head, electrical activity of the muscles of the back and the neck, subjective sensation, skin temperature in the lumbar area and visual and tracking performance. It was found that increasing shock a…

Symmetric frames on Lorentzian spaces

1991

Symmetric frames (those whose vectors are metrically indistinguishable) are studied both, from the algebraic and differential points of view. Symmetric frames which, in addition, remain indistinguishable for a given set of concomitants of the metric are analyzed, and the necessary and sufficient conditions for a space‐time to admit them are given. A new version of the cosmological principle then follows. Natural symmetric frames (induced by local charts) are also considered, and the space‐times admitting them are obtained.

Zotepin versus Perazin bei Patienten mit paranoider Schizophrenie: eine doppelblind-kontrollierte Wirksamkeitsprüfung

1991

The dibenzothiepine zotepine is a new potential "atypical" neuroleptic exhibiting powerful antiserotonergic and antidopaminergic properties. The efficacy of zotepine was evaluated in a double-blind controlled trial versus the tricyclic neuroleptic perazine in 41 patients suffering mainly from the paranoid-hallucinatory type of schizophrenia. The key outcome variable was the extent of mental disturbance as defined by the total score of the BPRS. Additional outcome variables were GAS and CGI. In addition, adverse reactions and extrapyramidal side effects were assessed according to the FSUCL scale and the Gerlach and AIMS rating scale, respectively. Pair potential calculation of molecular associations: a vectorized version

1991

Abstract The program AMYRVF is a vectorized and largely modified version of a previous program called AMYR for calculating molecular associations by means of Fraga's pair-wise atom-atom potential. Three new minimization procedures have been implemented as well as other improvements such as the inclusion of new pair-wise dispersion energy terms with damping functions, and the calculation of topological indices. Benchmark tests have been carried out on an IBM 3090 150E VF; the timings for the new vector algorithms and for the standard scalar computations, as well as the dependence of the overall performance gain on the size of interacting systems are reported for the VS Fortran 2.4 compiler e…

Abstract p-Tol6PbSn has been synthesized by reaction of p-Tol3PbLi with p-Tol3SnI in THF/ether (1:2) at −78°C. The crystal structures of p-Tol4Pb (I 4 ) and of p-Tol6Sn2, p-Tol6PbSn and p-Tol6Pb2 have been determined. The three dinuclear compounds crystallize not strickly isomorphous. They exhibit the same space group (R 3 and rather similar unit cell dimensions. Yet according to the solvent of crystallization, two types with differing atomic position parameters can be distinguished (“homoeotypism with differences of parameters” in the definition of Laves). Cross sections for nuclear reactions in collisions of238U+238U and238U +197Au near and below the coulomb barrier

1991

Cross sections for nuclear reactions at beam energies near and below the spherical Coulomb barrier V c were measured in the very heavy collision systems238U +238U and238U +197Au. The most probable reaction channel with mass transfer is the one-neutron transfer. Its excitation function is understood in terms of Rutherford trajectories together with the quantal process of neutron tunnelling over large distances. In addition, the exchange of up to 15 nucleons is observed down to 0.90 V c . The excitation functions for the multi-nucleon transfer products have much steeper slopes than that for one-neutron transfer, and are steeper for238U +197Au than for238U +238U, suggesting that nuclear contac…

Antiferroelectric betaine phosphate (BP: (CH3)3NCH2COO · H3PO4) and ferroelectric betaine phosphite (BPI: (CH3)3NCH2COO · H3PO3) are molecular crystals of the amino acid betaine and the phosphoric or phosphorous acids, respectively. In both compounds the inorganic components are linked by hydrogen bonds to one-dimensional chains. The two isostructural compounds form solid solutions BPxBPI1-x at any concentration. Here we report measurements of the dielectric permittivity for concentrations 0.85 ≤ × ≤ 1 at frequencies 10−2 ≤ v ≤ 109 Hz and temperatures 2 K ≤ T ≤ 300 K. Physical model, theoretical aspects and applications of the flight of a ball in the atmosphere. Part II: Theoretical aspects in the case of vertical …

1991

If a ball is viewed as a rigid body, its flight in the atmosphere can be described by a system of six ordinary differential equations, which has been derived in the first part of this paper. In this following second part, the theoretical aspects such as the curvature of the orbit and certain velocity functions will be investigated in the case of the vertical angular frequency of the rotating ball, in which the differential equations reduce to a planar dynamical system. This system turns out to be not explicity solvable. The solutions of the corresponding ordinary or boundary value problems. computed numerically, are used to treat certain problems in international ball games. for example, th…

In rat brain, histaminergic (HAergic) fibres are particulary rich in the hypothalamus. This prompted an investigation of the influence of bath-applied HAergic compounds on the spontaneous electrical activity of SCN neurons, recorded extracellularly in the hypothalamic slice preparation. Cells activated by bath application of HA ( n = 28) outnumbered those inhibited by HA ( n = 6). 48% of cells tested ( n = 28) were unresponsive to HA application. HA-induced activation of SCN neurons' discharge rate could be suppressed by the H…
