Epidemiology of crohn's disease in Sicily: A hospital incidence study from 1987 to 1989

1991

An epidemiologic study of Crohn's disease was carried out in the Province of Palermo, Italy, between 1987 and 1989. The incidence of first hospitalization was prospectively evaluated in this period. A total of 103 patients (59 males, 44 females) were diagnosed. The standardized annual incidence was 2.7/100,000. The incidence was quite constant during the 3 years of the study (1987: 2.9/100,000; 1988: 2.4/100,000; 1989: 2.99/100,000). Incidence rates were slightly higher in men than in women. The disease had a bimodal age distribution in female (with peaks at age 20–29 and 60–69) and males (with peaks at age 30–39, 40–49). No cases were observed at age 0–9. The incidence of Crohn's disease i…

Distribution of Cartilage Proteoglycan (Aggrecan) Core Protein and Link Protein Gene Expression during Human Skeletal Development

1991

The distribution of cartilage proteoglycan core protein (aggrecan) and cartilage proteoglycan link protein was investigated by in situ hybridization during different stages of human skeletal development. Aggrecan and link protein expression were confined to chondrocytes of the developing skeleton and other cartilaginous structures. Distribution and intensity of the signal was identical with aggrecan as compared to link protein probes. Parallel to the calcification of cartilaginous matrix, chondrocytes of this area lost the expression of aggrecan and link protein specific mRNA and stayed negative throughout the following stages of skeletal development. Highest expression was found in the low…

Multiple effects of visual format on TV news learning

1991

Two experiments were conducted on edited TV newscast sequences to clarify effects of film accompaniment on learning from heard news text. In Experiment 1,150 British subjects viewed a sequence with either film format throughout or alternating film and ‘talking head’ format between items. Those items that were presented by ‘talking heads’ in the mixed sequence were learned better with film format, in which the heard text was accompanied by appropriate moving pictures. However, no effect of uniform context was found on the remaining items. In Experiment 2, 91 German subjects viewed one of four versions of a bulletin, one with ‘talking head’, one with film throughout, the other two having comp…

Preparation and Thermal Behavior of Freely-Suspended and Transferred Films Composed of a Single Compound, the Liquid Crystal 707PP

1991

We have recently introduced a new method for the preparation of ultrathin smectic films on solid supports by transferring freely-suspended liquid-crystalline films [1, 2]. Here we report on the preparation, structural properties and thermal behavior of freely-suspended and transferred films of 2-(4'-Heptyloxyphenyl)-5-heptylpyridine (707PP). Freely-suspended and transferred films were investigated using optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Both types of films exhibit reversible phase transitions comparable to bulk values.

Ein gestieltes Dnndarmsegment zum zirkulren Ersatz des extrahepatischen Gallengangs bei erhaltener papillrer Passage

1991

The effect of a small bowel segment as a extrahepatic bile duct replacement was examined in 12 pigs followed-up for a period of 420 days. No complications, either during the operation or postoperatively, were observed in any of the animals. The laboratory parameters were within normal range over the entire observation period of 420 days. After 2, 6, and 12 months there was no anastomotic stenosis in the PTC. The intrahepatic biliary tract was not dilated. There was obvious peristalsis of the small bowel transplant towards the papilla of Vater. The autopsy showed that the grafts had healed without any sign of irritation. Histologically the structure of the graft remained undisturbed. There w…

Dexamethasone modulates α2-macroglobulin and apolipoprotein E gene expression in cultured rat liver fat-storing (Ito) cells

1991

Fat-storing (Ito) cells are perisinusoidal liver cells thought to play a central role in vitamin A metabolism and fibrogenesis. Glucocorticoids have been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of certain types of liver diseases by delaying the development of cirrhosis. To study the regulatory effects of dexamethasone on Ito cell gene expression, Ito cells were isolated from normal rat liver and primary cultures were established. The effect of dexamethasone on the synthesis of α2-macroglobulin, apolipoprotein E, fibronectin and actin was examined. Protein synthesis was studied both at the protein level and at the RNA level by means of biosynthetic labeling, immunoprecipitation followed by s…

Pectin concentration, Molecular Weight and Degree of Esterification : Influence on Volatile Composition and Sensory Characteristics of Strawberry Jam

1991

Composition of headspace, consistency, taste and flavor characteristics were determined in jams made with different pectins. At usual concentrations, high methoxylated pectin induced an undesirable modification of typical flavor and intensity of flavor and taste, whereas low methoxylated pectin induced few alterations. At fixed concentration and molecular weight, a decrease in degree of esterification produced a significant decrease in consistency and noticeable modifications of the flavor perception and headspace composition, but no taste alteration. Mechanical reduction of pectin molecular weight significantly modified only the consistency.

PSR 1758 – 24 and G5.4 – 1.2, a remarkable pulsar–supernova remnant association

1991

Τiming observations made over an 18-month period using the Parkes radiotelescope show that the pulsar PSR 1758-24 is young and is located at the extreme western edge of the compact nebula G5.27-0.90 which is associated with supernova remnant G5.4-1.2. These results confirm the association of this pulsar with the supernova remnant. They also imply that the pulsar was born with such a high velocity that is has overtaken the supernova remnant shell and now lies outside the shell

Langmuir-Blodgett Mono- and Multilayer Assemblies of Amphiphilic Liquid- Crystalline n-Alkyl-4′-n-alkoxybiphenyl-4-carboxylates. I

1991

Five n-Alkyl-4′-Alkoxy-biphenyl-4-carboxylates were investigated as Langmuir monolayers at the air/ water interface and as Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films on solid supports. All five compounds form stable monolayers at the air/water interface and can be transferred onto solid supports yielding LB-films, whose structures and kinetic behavior strongly depend on the headgroup. The structures of the LB-films were investigated by means of optical textures and X-ray diffraction and compared with the structures of the corresponding bulk phases which were investigated by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry and X-ray powder diffraction. The LB-films of the acid and the two methyl esters exhibit …

Enhanced serum levels of soluble HLA class I molecules are induced by treatment with recombinant interferon-gamma (IFN-γ)

1991

SUMMARY In order to investigate serum levels of soluble HLA class I antigens after single injection of various doses of recombinant IFN-γ (rIFN-γ) and to correlate the changes observed to beta-2-microglobulin serum levels, we studied five patients with metastasizing renal cell carcinoma. Each patient received three treatment cycles of 10, 100 and 500 μg rIFN-γ three times at weekly intervals. The treatment cycles were separated by a therapy-free interval of 2 weeks. The order of dose levels was randomly assigned to each patient. Serum levels of soluble HLA class I proteins were measured by an ELISA in samples drawn immediately before and 4, 24, 48, 72 and 168 h after each administration of …

Molybdenum(VI)-dioxo complexes with sterically bulky thiocarboxylate ligands. Reactions with aliphatic thiols and electrochemical properties

1991

Abstract Under acid conditions, the reaction of (Bu n 4 N)2[Mo VI O 2 (O 2 CC(S)Ph 2 ) 2 ] with aliphatic thiols yields the monomeric [Mo V O(O 2 CC(S)Ph 2 ) 2 ] − as unique complex product. The experimental pseudo-first order rate constant with respect to the Mo(VI) complex was found to be K =6.1 × 10 −5 s −1 . At neutral pH, however, an unstable Mo(IV) species was formed which was also electrochemically detected in a reversible Mo(V,IV) couple. [Mo V O(O 2 CC(S)Ph 2 ) 2 ] − appears to be obtained by the reaction of [Mo IV O(O 2 CC(S)Ph 2 ) 2 ] 2− with unreacted [Mo VI O 2 (O 2 CC(S)Ph 2 ) 2 ] 2− . Steric features on the ligand (gemdiphenyl groups) explain that the latter reaction does not…

Drainage großer Brustdrüsenabszesse unter ästhetischen und funktionellen Aspekten

1991

In 11 puerperal women, a breast abscess was treated by drainage from the inframammary fold. Eight patients wished to continue breast feeding. During the healing period, the babies were not breast fed on the operated side. In 3 patients, the skin over the abscess necrotised, resulting in a defect of 1 to 2 cm. In 2 patients, a small seroma had to be punctured after removing the drainage tube. Aesthetic results were judged by the patients as good. Resumation of suckling on the operated side revealed only 15 to 20% milk yield compared to that of the other breast. This treatment meets aesthetic and function-preserving criteria.

Immunity to diphtheria in the 3–19 year age group in Italy

1991

In Italy, immunization with diphtheria toxoid has been compulsory for all newborns since 1939. The last two clinical cases of diphtheria were reported in 1987. During the period 1987-1989, immunity against diphtheria was assessed by neutralization test in a random sample of 1740 healthy subjects 3-19 years old, from five geographical areas of Italy. Of the total population, 76.5% showed antibody levels considered to be protective (greater than or equal to 0.1 IU ml-1), 17.2% had a relative degree of protection (0.01-0.09 IU ml-1), and 6.3% lacked immunity (less than 0.01 IU ml-1). The percentage of unprotected subjects increased from 6.1% in the age group of 3-5 years to 11.4% in the age gr…

Topical canrenoic acid. Quantification of the antiandrogenic activity in the hamster flank organ

1991

: The topical antiandrogenic activity of potassium canrenoate (CAK), compared with that of spironolactone (SP), was assayed in vivo in female golden Syrian hamsters whose flank organs were stimulated by subcutaneous administration of testosterone propionate. Sebaceous glands and hair were measured by a computerized image analyzer. Pigmented spots, sebaceous gland areas, and the diameter of hairs of the treated flank organs were smaller in the groups that received CAK (1·6 mg/day) and SP (0·4 mg/day). The authors' results showed that CAK may act as a topical antiandrogen on the hamster flank organ when applied in concentrations four times greater than the minimal active dosage of SP. Potassi…

Strong influence of the exposure medium on mutagenicity in the Ames test: 7-methylbenz[a]anthracene-5,6-oxide.

1991

We have previously shown that the activity of the ionized mutagen, 1-hydroxmethylpyrene sulphate, is strongly enhanced in Salmonella typhimurium TA98, when KCl is present in the exposure medium (50-fold at a concentration of 125 mM KCl) and that the halogen ion is responsible for this effect. Here we show that KCl has the opposite effect on the activity of the lipophilic mutagen, 7-methylbenz[a]anthracene-5,6-oxide, (10-fold decrease at a concentration of 125 mM) and that K+ accounts for this influence. Many other solutes also decreased the mutagenicity of 7-methylbenz[a]anthracene-5,6-oxide, but to a smaller extent than the K+ salts. The stability of 7-methylbenz[a]anthracene-5,6-oxide did…

On the Electrostatic Component of the Adhesional Interaction between Solid Substrates and Langmuir Monolayers

1991

The work of adhesion between Langmuir monolayers and solid surfaces in a hydrophilic Langmuir-Blodgett configuration has been measured as function of the surface charge densities σ of the contacting surfaces. It was derived from the equilibrium meniscus height which was measured with the transfer fluorescence microscope. The surface charge density of the contacting surfaces was varied by changing the subphase pH. With both surfaces negatively charged (dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine onto SiO2-substrates) and low charge densities (σ < 1 e−/100 A2)) we observe a decrease of the adhesion with increasing charge density. At high charge densities (dimyristoylphosphatidic acid onto SiO2-substr…

1H,13C and17O NMR study of aromatic ring-substituted monochloro- and monobromo-(E)-3-phenylpropenals

1991

Trans-Cinnamaldehydes (CAs) or o-, m- and p-X-(E)-3-phenylpropenals; (X = Cl or Br) were synthesized and their 1H, 13C and 17O NMR spectra were measured, assigned and analysed. The long-range benzylic couplings are discussed in terms of the conformational characteristics of the related styrene systems. The 1H, 13C and 17O NMR substituent chemical shifts of the CA derivatives were compared with those of styrene and explained by the π-electron delocalization in the conjugated CCCO bond system of CA.

A MRCI PS and CASSCF study of the ground state MgO dissociation energy

1991

Abstract Ab initio calculations at CASSCF and MRCI PS levels are used to determine the dissociation energy for the X 1 Σ + state of MgO, which adiabatically dissociates to the ground state 1 S g of magnesium and to the excited 1 D g state of oxygen, as well as other spectroscopic parameters. Emphasis is placed upon the problem of properly selecting an adequate active space in CASSCF calculations and upon the improvements obtained in MRCI by selecting perturbatively the most important contributions to the total wavefunction and evaluating the remaining ones only by perturbational method. Through a procedure based on stabilizing the computed dissociation energy, values of 3.87 eV (MRCI PS) an…

Epidemiologie von Infektionskrankheiten bei Kindern in den alten Ländern der Bundesrepublik Deutschland*

1991

This study was done to describe the epidemiology of infectious diseases in children living in the old countries of the Federal Republic of Germany. After an intensive search for literature, data about notifiable diseases, data from insurance agencies and a random test from 700 charts of a general pediatrician were reviewed and analysed in a standardized way for their validity. No single review article on this topic was found. Estimates about the frequency of some specific infectious diseases as well as data about notifiable diseases proved to be unreliable and not useful from a scientific point of view. Published insurance data suggested, that infectious diseases may contribute comparativel…

Structural Relationships between Floating and Deposited Monolayers of Docosanoic Acid

1991

Floating docosanoic acid (behenic acid) monolayers in the SmI and SmH phase were deposited with the Langmuir-Blodgett technique onto thin polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and Formvar substrates and investigated by electron diffraction. The molecular packing of the monolayers on the substrates vary from those on the water surface and are different for different substrates. On PMMA four phases (H, SmB, SmI, SmL) have been identified, depending on the deposition conditions. While SmB and SmI are known for docosanoic acid on the water surface, H and SmL have only been unequivocally observed in other substances or on other subphases. The monolayer structure on Formvar was identical under all deposi…

Differential stabilization of cytochrome P-450 isoenzymes in primary cultures of adult rat liver parenchymal cells.

1991

Cytochrome P-450 dependent hydroxylation of testosterone was measured in 7-day-old cultures of primary rat liver parenchymal cells. Determinations were carried out in monocultures of parenchymal cells and co-cultures of parenchymal cells with rat liver nonparenchymal epithelial cells, or mouse embryo fibroblasts. In the monoculture system, testosterone metabolism was drastically reduced and hardly measurable after 7 days in culture. In the co-culture systems, individual P-450 isoenzymes were stabilized on different levels. P-450s p and presumably c were well preserved, P-450 a was reduced but clearly measurable, P-450 h was totally lost whereas P-450s b and e were not measurable after 7 day…

A performance evaluation of the expert system 'Jaundice' in comparison with that of three hepatologists.

1991

The diagnostic performance of an Expert System (Jaundice) designed to discriminate between different causes of jaundice was evaluated in a test sample of 200 consecutive in-patients with serum bilirubin greater than or equal to 51 mumol/l. The average probability assigned to true diagnosis, the non-error rate and the overall accuracy were, respectively, 55%, 77% and 70%. The Expert System's discriminatory ability in probabilistic prediction, assessed by a method based on continuous functions of the diagnostic probabilities (Brier score) was good. We also compared the ability of our Expert System to that of three experienced hepatologists, who were required to give a diagnosis in 20 cases fo…

GEPOL: An improved description of molecular surfaces II. Computing the molecular area and volume

1991

The algorithm used by the program GEPOL for a finer description of molecular surface (for a fast calculation of molecular area and volume and for an efficient selection of sampling points) is presented in detail. Different types of surfaces such as van der Waals and Richard's molecular surfaces can be computed. As we described in the first article (J.L. Pascual-Ahuir and E. Silla, J. Comp. Chem., 11, 1047(1990)), GEPOL begins by building a set of spherical surfaces which fill the space which is not solvent accessible. In this second article, a triangular tessellation approach to select the parts of these spherical surfaces which form the molecular surface is described. By using a data coded…

Reactivity of infiltrating T lymphocytes with microbial antigens in Crohn's disease.

1991

Intestinal T lymphocytes are normally unresponsive to microbial and recall antigens in vitro, whereas the same antigens induce strong immune responses in peripheral-blood-derived T cells. We obtained T lymphocytes from peripheral blood and from the non-inflamed and inflamed intestinal mucosa of 6 patients (3 male, 3 female; mean age 33 years) with Crohn's disease. The T cells were stimulated in vitro with a range of microbial antigens. Whereas T cells from normal mucosa were unresponsive, those from inflamed mucosa had a proliferative response comparable to that of the peripheral-blood-derived T cells. These findings suggest that physiologic unresponsiveness to luminal antigens is abrogated…

DNA fluorescence induced by polymethine cation pyrvinium binding

1991

Pyrvinium is a polymethine cation which shows interesting fluorescence emission and DNA binding properties. In diluted aqueous solution, pyrvinium pamoate induced a bright yellow fluorescence in kinetoplast DNA from Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes as well as in chicken erythrocyte nuclei under a wide range of excitations. No fading was observed after mounting in suitable media. Spectroscopic studies on pyrvinium solutions revealed bathochromic and hypochromic shifts in the absorption spectrum of its complex with DNA. A striking enhancement of pyrvinium fluorescence was found in solvents of high viscosity or after binding to DNA. Experimental results and the chemical structure of pyrvinium a…

Detection of a Single Gene Encoding Glutamine Synthetase in Sinapis alba (L.)

1991

Summary Ion-exchange chromatography of glutamine synthetase polypeptides (GS; EC 6.3.1.2) from green leaves and the roots of Sinapis alba yielded identical elution patterns. This is likewise true for GS from etiolated cotyledons. As we have previously demonstrated the identity of GS-enzymes from etiolated and green leaf tissues, the obviously very similar charge properties of GS-proteins indicate the eventual existence of only one type of GS in all mustard plant organs. To further prove this possibility, Southern blot analysis of mustard DNA was carried out using hybridization probes specific to different GS-isoforms. Concluding from the relative strength of the hybridization signals, the G…
