Kestrel hunting behaviour towards solitary and grouped Microtus agrestis and M. epiroticus — a laboratory experiment

Extensive field data show that avian and mammalian predators take more Microtus epiroticus than coexisting Microtus agrestis voles. The different vulnerability of these vole species may arise from prey selection or susceptibility differences between the two vole species. We studied the prey selection and hunting behaviour of the kestrel Falco tinnunculus on two Microtus voles, in addition to how behaviour and group structure in voles affect their vulnerability. The main results were that 1) kestrels do not select either of these species, but 2) susceptibility of the vole species deviates significantly. Esta comunicación reflexiona sobre las razones que han llevado a los estudiosos a sostener la posible influencia del cine soviético de los años veinte en la película española La aldea Maldita (Florián Rey, 1930). Para ello analiza las circunstancias de producción de ambas cinematografías, española y rusa, entendidas en su contexto sociocultural. This paper reflects on the reasons that have led researchers to support the possible influence of the Soviet cinema of the twenties in the Spanish film “La aldea maldita” (The Cursed Village, Florian Rey, 1930). It looks at the circumstances of production of both cinemas, Spanish and Russian, understood in their cultural context.

On FE-grid relocation in solving unilateral boundary value problems by FEM

We consider FE-grid optimization in elliptic unilateral boundary value problems. The criterion used in grid optimization is the total potential energy of the system. It is shown that minimization of this cost functional means a decrease of the discretization error or a better approximation of the unilateral boundary conditions, Design sensitivity analysis is given with respect to the movement of nodal points. Numerical results for the Dirichlet-Signorini problem for the Laplace equation and the plane elasticity problem with unilateral boundary conditions are given. A parallel splitting-up method for partial differential equations and its applications to Navier-Stokes equations

The tradìtíonal splitting-up method or fractíonal step method is stuítable for sequentìal compulìng. Thís means that the computing of the present fractional step needs the value of the previous fractional steps. In thìs paper we propose a new splitting-up scheme for which the computing of the fractional steps is índependent of each other and therefore can be computed by parallel processors. We have proved the convergence estimates of this scheme both for steady state and nonsteady state linear and nonlinear problems. In this paper we study the geometry of (M, G) by using the ideas developed in [Michor, 1980]. With that differentiable structure on M it is possible to use variational principles and so we start in section 2 by computing geodesics as the curves in M minimizing the energy functional. From the geodesic equation, the covariant derivative of the Levi-Civita connection can be obtained, and that provides a direct method for computing the curvature of the manifold. Abstract Several P homologous sequences have been cloned and sequenced from Drosophila subobscura. These sequences are located at the 85DE region of the O chromosome and at least three of them are organized in tandem. We have identified four copies which exhibit strong similarity between them. All of the isolated elements are truncated at the 5' and 3' ends. They have lost the inverted terminal repeats and exon 3, but maintain exons 0, 1 and 2. They are transcribed producing a polyadenylated RNA. The structure of these transcripts suggests that they are able to encode a 66 kd repressor-like protein, but not a functional transposase. Bis-ferrocene derivatives of bridged calix[4]arenes: syntheis, X-ray crystal structure and electrochemical properties

The reaction of chlorocarbonylferrocene (2) with bridged calix[4]arene macrocyclic compounds, in which two opposite para-positions are connected by an additional aliphatic chain where n = 5 (1a) or n = 8 (1b) respectively, gave the corresponding new redox-active bis-ferrocene derivatives of bridged calix[4]arenes, 3a and 3b. An X-ray diffraction study of 3a shows that the caliz[4]arene has a cone conformation in which the two ferrocene substituents are located on the phenolic units connected to each other by the aliphatic chain bridge.
