Substance P inactivation by transglutaminase in vitro.

Gamma(glutamyl5)spermine derivative of substance P (Spm-SP) was synthesized in vitro in the presence of purified guinea pig liver transglutaminase and Ca2+. The spermine adduct of the neuropeptide was purified by HPLC on a reversed-phase column and characterized by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. The biological activities of Spm-SP were tested by assaying, in comparison with substance P, its ability to induce both the contractions of smooth muscle in vitro and the edema formation in vivo. Platón abordó el tema del amor en múltiples ocasiones a lo largo de su obra, y lo convirtió en objeto principal de reflexión en varios de sus diálogos, dos de los cuales -el Banquete y el Fedro- constituyen obras maestras de la literatura filosófica. La riqueza de matices y de aspectos que su mirada logra descubrir es tan grande, que limitarse a considerar alguno de ellos es exponerse a incurrir en la simplificación. Apparent content curves: description and analytical applications. Resolution of binary mixtures

The apparent content curves and their analytical applications are described. Basing on these curves a mathematical method, which permits the identification of the interfering component present in a binary mixture as well as the determination of the contents of both constituents, is proposed. The existence of considerable interaction coefficients is not an impediment for its application. Besides, the analyte contents in the mixture can be obtained without the use of standard interference solutions. The proposed procedure is applied to the analysis of mixtures of dyes with overlapping absorption spectra.

Search for scalar leptoquarks from Z$^0$ decays

We have searched for pair produced scalar leptoquarks each decaying to a quark and a charged lepton in a sample of 116 000 hadronic Z0 events produced at LEP. No candidate was detected and cross section and branching ratio limits are set for the above process at 95% CL. Mass limits are found to be about 42 GeV/c2 depending only slightly on the models used and a coupling times branching ratio exclusion line is drawn for a scalar leptoquark with a free coupling. We have also probed the mass region above 45 GeV/c2 for a singly produced scalar leptoquark and set limits on the cross section and the coupling lambda(2)/4-pi up to 60 GeV.

Summary In the monogeneric family Ctenolophonaceae extrastaminal discs are developed, whose parenchyma and marginally stomata bearing epidermis appear to be adenoid. The discs are extensively vascularized by phloematic branches derived from bundles of the adnate stamens. The flowers are unshowy, simply constructed and without special nectar protecting structures. Pollinators are still unknwon, but nectar-exploiting bees and flies probably predominate. The Ctenolophonaceae are closely connected with Humiriaceae. Presumed affinities with Malpighiaceae are questioned.

In order to perform a nonlinear dimensional analysis of the sleep EEG, we applied an algorithm proposed to calculate the correlation dimension D2 of different sleep stages. D2 characterizes the dynamics of the sleep EEG, estimates the degrees of freedom, and describes the complexity of the signal under study. An attempt is made to correlate dimensionality analysis and informational aspects of the sleep EEG. Information processing by the brain during different sleep stages of healthy subjects under the influence of lorazepam and in unmedicated acute schizophrenics is estimated.

Vitamin A and its congeners, collectively called retinoids, are known to have teratogenic potential and have induced craniofacial and limb malformations in numerous animal species. More importantly, retinoids are recognized as teratogenic to fetuses of pregnant women who have taken such preparations for dermatologic disorders. This paper stresses the importance of the hypothesis of linearity of the deterministic component imposed by unit root testing procedures most frequently used in empirical literature. We suggest an empirical testing strategy which reduces the risk of reaching false conclusions due to the misspecification of that component and we apply it to the analysis of the nonstationarity exhibited by real GNP in France. Abstract The paper presents a new application of the min-max method, an original algorithm previously successfully applied in other areas and based on a combination of the quasi-Newton and steepest descent methods in order to find the weights minimising the error function of a feed forward neural networks. Preliminary results, obtained by applying the proposed method to a simple 2-2-1 architecture on small Boolean learning problems, are very promising.

Glutathione conjugation of trans-3,4-dihydroxy 1,2-epoxy l,2,3,4-tetrahydrobenzo[c]phenanthrene isomers by human glutathione transferases

Each of the four stereoisomers of trans-3,4-dihydroxy 1,2-epoxy 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrobenzo[c]phenanthrene [(+)- and (-)-anti-BPhDE and (+)- and (-)-syn-BPhDE] has been incubated with the human glutathione transferase (GST) isoenzymes GST A1-1, GST M1-1 and GST P1-1, representing class alpha, mu and pi respectively, and glutathione (GSH). The conjugates formed were analyzed by HPLC and the results demonstrate that all GST isoenzymes catalyze the formation of GSH conjugates of all BPhDE isomers. However, a marked variation in catalytic efficiencies was observed (0.122-1.28/mM/s). A simple protocol for extraction and detection of pyrazines produced by fungi in solid state fermentation

A protocol for the extraction and detection of pyrazines produced by fungi in Solid State Fermentation that gave good recovery of these compounds was devised together with specific techniques for detection by Gas Chromatography (GC). The protocol involved solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extractions, concentration of the extracts and GC analysis. Extraction yields were measured from a model system in which synthetic pyrazines were added. Extracts were analysed with a gas chromatograph equipped with a thermo-ionic detector to allow specific pyrazine detection.
