Preparation and characterization of gels with garnet structure: A3B2C3O12, using ‘non-classical’ solvents

Abstract Synthesis and characterization of some crystalline garnets by sol-gel techniques is described. The effects of emthanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), CH2Cl2 and toluene solvents on gelation of TEOS are considered. Multicomponent gel formation in systems with stoichiometries 3CaO·Cr2O3·3SiO2 and 3CaO·Al2O2 was studied using DMSO, a polar solvent, and toluene, an apolar solvent. The dried gel was thermally treated and the powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy.

Stochastic response of combined primary-secondary structures under seismic input

A technique for non-stationary stochastic analysis of linear combined primary and secondary subsystems subjected to a zero-mean Gaussian base excitation is presented. The proposed technique, based on the use of the Taylor's expansion in evaluating the operators which appear in the step-by-step procedure, does not require the evaluation of the complex eigenproperties of the combined system. Operating in this way, even though the numerical procedure is a conditionally stable one, appears to be more efficient than existing methods to evaluate the dynamic response of such composite systems. Presentamos un estudio retrospectivo de siete pacientes tratados con artroplastia total de tobillo en el período 1978-1988, realizando una revisión bibliográfica del tema. La serie la componen cinco hombres y dos mujeres con edades comprendidas entre 41 y 72 años. Cinco pacientes estaban afectos de artrosis postraumática, uno de artropatía gotosa y otro de espondilitis anquilopoyética. Los modelos protésicos utilizados fueron Smith en cuatro ocasiones e I.C.L.H. en tres. El seguimiento medio ha sido de once años, siendo evaluados según un sistema de puntuación creado por Mc Guire. We review some properties of Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of the hadronic interactions, which serve as guidelines to introduce low energy models of hadron structure. Among these we shall center our attention in the non relativistic quark model and the topological bag model. We present some of their applications to actual problems in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics. Autoantibodies in experimental autoimmune hepatitis

Experimental autoimmune hepatitis (EAH) can be induced in mice by immunization with syngeneic soluble liver antigens in complete Freund's adjuvant. It has previously been shown that autoreactive T cells play an important role in this animal model of autoimmune hepatitis. We have studied the occurrence of liver autoantibodies in EAH. Characteristic autoantibodies appeared several weeks after disease induction and antibody titres continued to rise when histological and biochemical signs of disease activity had already regressed. SUMMARY Acid hydrolysis has been used in order to establish the presence of glycosidically bound components in fruits. During this treatment, rearrangement reactions of free monoterpene alcohols generally occur. This inconvenient may be avoided using enzymatic hydrolysis, however the specificity of enzymes requires the previous knowledge of the structures of compounds used as substrates in order to control the reaction. Einflußgrößen des perioperativen Risikos der chirurgischen Behandlung des Magenkarzinoms

In einem Zeitraum von 4 Jahren wurde die perioperative Morbiditat (allgemein und chirurgisch) beim Magenkarzinom prospektiv untersucht. Wichtige Einflusgrosen waren das Operationsverfahren (kurative Gastrektomie, n = 84, 38%, Resektion, n = 29, 17%), die Infiltrationstiefe (T1, 2 31%, T3, 4 48%), der Allgemeinzustand (ASA 1, 2, 25%, ASA 3, 4 50%) und die Hohe des intraoperativen Blutverlustes (−500 ml 24%, > 500 ml 38%). Keine Bedeutung hatte das Lebensalter. Bei niedriger Mortalitat (3,5%) hatten diese Einflusgrosen der Morbiditat abgesehen von der Infiltrationstiefe keine Bedeutung fur die weitere Prognose.

Herbicidal activity of phosphonic and phosphinic acid analogues of glutamic and aspartic acids

Phosphonic and phosphinic acid analogues of glutamic and aspartic acids were synthesized and screened for herbicidal activity on Lepidium sativum L. Depending on the chemical structure, they exhibited significant or moderate herbicidal activity against L. sativum roots (with some representatives being equipotent with phosphinothricin), while their influence on shoot growth was negligible. Cucumis sativus L. appeared to be more tolerant to these analogues. The origin of this selectivity remains to be determined.

Multiplicity dependence of mean transverse momentum in $e^+e^-$ annihilations at LEP energies

A strong increase of the mean transverse momentum [p(t)] with the number of charged particles n(ch) is observed in e+e- annihilations into hadrons at LEP energies, The effect resembles correlations observed in hadron-hadron interactions. In e+e- annihilations the [p(t)] and n(ch) correlations can be accounted for by gluon radiation.

Consistent treatment of relativistic corrections in deuteron photodisintegration in a one-pion-exchange model

Using a one-pion-exchange model for the nucleon-nucleon interaction the relativistic corrections to potential and to the electromagnetic operators are derived in a power expansion of (p/M). All corrections up to the order (p/M)3 are consistently included. Numerical results are shown for differential cross section and polarization observables for deuteron photodisintegration. A sizeable influence of relativistic effects on some observables is found even at low energies. A comparison of our operators with the expressions of other authors is given.

Measurement of Human Tumor Blood Flow: A Positron Technique Using an Artifact of High Energy Radiation Therapy

For at least three decades (1–6) there has been an interest in measuring tumor blood flow (TBF) and in the determination of its relation to the response of human tumors to radiation, drug therapies, and to the probability of development of distant metastases. The proton activation method which will be described below allows daily measurements of blood flow, in only 7 minutes, in patients being irradiated by photons of ≥20 MV, or by protons and other heavy particles.

AbstractAllozyme electrophoresis of 14 loci provided information on the distribution of the two central European subspecies of the fire salamander, Salamandra salamandra salamandra (dotted taxon) and S.s.terrestris (striped taxon), along an east-west-transect in Germany. 2183 larvae from 48 populations situated in 14 mountain ranges were studies. A broad (about 140 km wide) zone of intergradition between the two forms is described, ranging from the Hunsrück Mountains in the west to the Spessart in the east.
