Lake Paijanne, the second largest lake in Finland, has been seriously polluted since the 1960s due to the effluents from pulp and paper mills, notably the Aanekoski sulphate and sulphite pulp mills situated about 50 km north of the lake, and the sulphite pulp mill and paper mills of Jamsankoski and Kaipola on Central Lake Paijanne.

Fibrinogen and von Willebrand factor in type II diabetes mellitus

A hypercoagulable state may contribute to the formation of early vascular lesions in diabetes. The von Willebrand factor is required for the attachment of platelets to the subendothelium; fibrinogen is required for platelet aggregation. This study was designed to assess in type II diabetic patients plasma levels of fibrinogen and von Willebrand factor to see if these variables are associated with platelet aggregation responses to adenosine diphosphate (ADP). The kinetics and the molecular weight distributions (MWD) in the anionic polymerization of tert-butyl acrylate (tBuA) in tetrahydrofuran at 23 ± 3°C were investigated. Tert-butyl α-lithioisobutyrate (tBiB-Li) was used as the initiator in the absence and presence of the additives lithium chloride and lithium tert-butoxide (tBuOLi). A flow tube reactor was used which allowed very rapid mixing of reagents, within milliseconds. The polymerization is extremely fast, half-lives being 0,01 s for the system without additive, 0,05 s for LiCl and 3 s for tBuOLi as an additive. The free radical, theory of aging suggests that oxygen free radicals may be involved in the aging process. Thus, changes in antioxidant mechanisms may occur with aging. Since glutathione is one of the most effective antioxidant systems in the cell, its metabolism may change with aging. In this chapter we describe experiments which show the involvement of glutathione in the aging process and which provide a rationale for the administration of antioxidants to old organisms to protect them against some of the changes that occur with aging.

MEASUREMENT OF THE PRODUCTION-RATES OF ETA AND ETA' IN HADRONIC-Z DECAYS

The decays eta --> gammagamma and eta' --> etapi+pi- have been observed in hadronic decays of the Z produced at LEP. The fragmentation functions of both the eta and eta' have been measured. The measured multiplicities for x > 0.1 are 0.298 +/- 0.023 +/- 0.021 and 0.068 +/- 0.018 +/- 0.016 for eta and eta' respectively. While the fragmentation function for the eta is fairly well described by the JETSET Monte Carlo, it is found that the production rate of the eta' is a factor of four less than the corresponding prediction.

The additional polarization form factors (inclusive reaction) and structure functions (exclusive reaction) are discussed. Abstract Low temperature mobility of 2-D electrons in indium selenide is calculated, taking into account neutral and ionized impurity scattering. Two-dimensional electric subbands are originated due to quantum size effects, at both sides of thin ϵ-polytype layers, separated by two stacking faults from the bulk γ-InSe. Ionized impurities are in the ϵ-layer and then, spatially separated from 2-D electrons. Neutral impurities are adsorbed to stacking faults in the ϵ-γ interface. A relaxation time for dipole-like neutral impurity scattering is deduced. Abstract Heterogeneous plastics wastes are usually recycled by means of ad hoc designed equipment which, in a single step, produces objects with large dimensions and poor mechanical properties. In this preliminary work, the possibility of preparing blends of plastics waste and low-density polyethylene is investigated. These ‘secondary’ materials (with plastics waste content up to 50%) show mechanical properties similar, except for the elongation at break, to those of the virgin polyethylene. The addition of moderate amounts of calcium carbonate does not significantly reduce the properties of these materials.

Fast detection of bovine milk in Rocquefort cheese with phastsystem by gel isoelectric focusing and immunoblotting

.Summary - A fast procedure for the detection of bovine milk in Roquefort cheese is described. It is based on the separation by rapid isoelectric focusing on Phasteysterne apparatus of 12-caseinsfrom the milk of the 2 species. The presence of bovine milk is also confirmed by the detection in the electrophoretic pattern of a ~-casein derived peptide from bovine milk, during cheese ripening, identified by immunoblotting. By using Ihis procedure, levels of bovine milk as low as 5% were easily delecled in Roquefort cheese ripened for a period varying from 10 days to 5 months.

The text edited is an extant fragment, copied by the end of the XIVc and now kept in the Library of the monastery of Montserrat, of a medieval Cançoner written in the occitan-catalan language normally used by Catalan poets of the period. This rare sample shows the transference to poems written in the vernacular, of the symbolism related to the Cross, otherwise characteristic of Latin medieval hymnology. The author traces some parallellism with a poem by Peire Cardenal.
