Hexagonal-columnar mesophases of acylated azacrowns with enhanced stabilities

A series of discotic liquid crystals based on completely acylated macrocyclic oligoamines (azacrowns) has been synthesized. Discotic mesophases could be very highly stabilized by making use of an increased steric hindrance, caused by supplemental lateral meta-substituents which were introduced into the cinnamic acids used as the acylation agents. Employing this method yields compounds exhibiting hexagonal mesophases over a very broad range of more than 300°. Even if very large macrocycles are used as the core of such disc-shaped compounds, enantiotropic mesophases are achieved. Adventitious shoot regeneration from hypocotyl cultures of service tree(Sorbus domesticaL.)

Effects of growth regulators and N03:NH4 ratio were investigated to determine the mor- phogenic capacity of hypocotyl explants of service tree (Sorbus domestica L.) Organogenic responses were preceded by an initial callus phase and depended mainly on the auxin type used. NAA induced root differentiation whereas IAA added to media containing BA promoted adventitious shoot regeneration. Best results were obtained with 2.5 μM each of BA and IAA (19% of caulogenic explants). This reponse was increased (up to 44%) by varying nitrate to ammonium ratio from 2:1 to 4:1.

Resume Le but de ce travail est de montrer experimentalement, par l'etude de divers constituants proteiques sanguins, que la farine de coton peut remplacer la farine de soja dans des regimes de rehabilitation nutritionnelle. Des rats de 70 ± 5 g au debut de l'experience subissent une carence proteique severe (2 % de caseine) durant 28 jours (MP), puis sont realimentes pendant 49 jours (RP) avec 4 regimes differents : rT (20 % de caseine), MSL (mais-sojalait, 60 %/30 %/5 %), MCL (mais-coton-lait, 60 %/30 %/5 %) et RCL (riz-coton-lait, 60 %/30 %/5 %). Deletion and insertion mutants of HBsAg particles

We have found previously that hybrid 22-nm HBsAg particles can be created by insertion of short antigenic sequences into the HBV major envelope protein [1]. We have now performed a detailed deletion mutagenesis of the S gene of HBV encoding HBsAg. Deletion of the 51 C-terminal amino acids including most of the third and all of the fourth hydrophobic domain of the S protein did not affect particle assembly and secretion. However, secretion of 22-nm particles was abolished by minor deletions in the N-terminal region. Insertion and deletion/substitution mutants carrying a poliovirus epitope at the N-terminus and the preSl region at the C-terminus have been characterized.

The orthogonal structure of Monsoon rainfall variation over Sri Lanka

The spatial organization of Monsoon rainfall over Sri Lanka is examined using Orthogonal Factor Analysis (OFA) on long-term mean monthly rainfall data. Three types of orthogonal structure of Monsoon regime in Sri Lanka have been identified. Interpretation of orthogonal factor scores revealed that a large amount of rainfall occurs from March to October in the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka, from December to February in the eastern parts, and in November in the northern and mid-western parts which are all represented by high positive factor scores. Treatment of retinitis by cytomegalovirus (CMV) in AIDS patients requires frequent repetitive injections of intravitreal ganciclovir (GCV). This study was undertaken to establish experimentally whether the intravitreal application of liposomally-entrapped GCV could prolong intraocular therapeutic levels when compared with the intravitreal injection of free GCV, and the clinical effectiveness of this approach in AIDS patients. Desde Abril de 1977 hasta Junio de 1992, han sido tratados 110 paciente s mediant e cirugía conservadora por presentar un tumor óseo primitivo maligno en región metafiso-epifisaria de fémur y tibia. El seguimiento medio ha sido de 6.4 años (1- 15 años). El diagnóstico histológico ha sido: osteosarcoma (48 casos), tumore s metastá- sicos (25) y Sarcoma de Ewing (8 casos) entre otros. La localización del tumor fue: extremidad proximal de fémur (42 casos) y distal de fémur y proximal de tibia (56 casos). A (generalized) star product (deformation of the associative product of functions on a symplectic manifold W) is closed iff integration over W is a trace on the deformed algebra. We show that for these products the cyclic cohomology replaces the Hochschild cohomology in usual star products. Gentamicin, norfloxacin and lysozyme concentration in human tears: in vivo and in vitro study

Hen's egg lysozyme (HEL) activity was measured in vitro with gentamicin and norfloxacin by a turbidimetric technique. Gentamicin at the concentration of 10(-3) M inhibited HEL activity by 39%, while 10(-3) M norfloxacin did not affect HEL activity. However, an in vivo study in healthy persons did not show any significant statistical difference in tear lysozyme activity when 0.3% gentamicin or 0.3% norfloxacin were topically applied.

An attempt was also made to determine the influence of father‐son interaction on the specific nature of these similarities. An activation of T-cells that is restricted to the lung has been demonstrated in pulmonary sarcoidosis. The role of blood monocytes (MO) and alveolar macrophages (AM) in this concept of compartmentalized inflammation has not yet been evaluated. In order to elucidate this question, we measured the release of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) and interleukin-1 (IL-1) by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC) and AM in 43 patients with sarcoidosis (32 with active, 11 with inactive disease) without therapy and correlated the spontaneous monokine release to parameters of the T-cell alveolitis and the course of the disease. The mild juvenile form of type IV glycogenosis, confirmed by a profound deficiency of the brancher enzyme in tissue specimens is reported from three Turkish male siblings who, foremost, suffered from chronic progressive myopathy. Muscle fibers contained polyglucosan inclusions of typical fine structure, i.e. a mixture of granular and filamentous glycogen. They reacted strongly for myophosphorylase, but were resistant to diastase. The state-of-the-art in the field of rapid radiochemical separation procedures is illustrated by two systems using aqueous solutions as input: ARCA, an apparatus for repetitive separations, and SISAK, a centrifuge system for continuous separations. Applications presented are: Solvent extraction of element 105 investigated with 34-s 262105 using ARCA, and decay scheme studies of the fission product 1.0-s 110Tc by means of SISAK.
