Tämä julkaisu on Suomen elinkeinotuotannon järjestelmä ja Euroopan integraatio -tutkimushankkeen osaraportti, jossa esitellään ja analysoidaan projektin aikana kerättyä, pienten länsieurooppalaisten maiden elintarviketuotannon järjestelmiä koskevaa tilastoaineistoa. Tutkimuksessa etsitään teoreettisia lähtökohtia elintarvikejärjestelmän kokonaisvaltaiselle ymmärtämistavalle. Itse tutkimuskohdetta lähestytään kokeilevalla, kuvailevalla, kuvallisella, kartografisella tutkimusotteella.

Until now radical nephrectomy has been regarded as the standard therapy for nonmetastasized renal cell carcinoma. This operation has been accepted because of the theoretical advantage of a more complete resection. A parenchyma-sparing operation was only performed in patients in whom radical nephrectomy would result in renal failure requiring hemodialysis (imperative indication), such as patients with single kidney, bilateral tumors, dysfunctional contralateral kidney, or chronic renal failure. Quantitative DNA measurements in malignant and benign lesions of the upper aerodigestive tract.

Thirty-six patients underwent biopsy of clinically suspicious lesions of the mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract. The biopsy material was evaluated histologically and cytologic smears out of the same lesion underwent quantitative DNA analysis using a numerical index derived from the single cell DNA content. In 30 patients, histologically diagnosed squamous cell cancer was confirmed by DNA analysis with the malignancy grade correlating with the morphologic differentiation of the tumor. Six lesions were histologically benign: i.e. dysplasia (n = 3), hyperplasia (n = 2) and chronic inflammation (n = 1). Properties of Hadronic Z-decays and Test of QCD Generators

Distributions are presented of event shape variables, jet roduction rates and charged particle momenta obtained from 53 000 hadronic Z decays. They are compared to the predictions of the QCD + hadronization models JETSET, ARIADNE and HERWIG, and are used to optimize several model parameters. The JETSET and ARIADNE coherent parton shower (PS) models with running alpha(s) and string fragmentation yield the best description of the data. The HERWIG parton shower model with cluster fragmentation fits the data less well. The data are in better agreement with JETSET PS than with JETSET O(alpha(s)2) matrix elements (ME) even when the renormalization scale is optimized.

Seit 1980 dokumentiert das Mainzer Kinderkrebsregister bundesweit die malignen Erkrankungen bei Kindern unter 15 Jahren. Zu den registrierten Daten gehort neben Angaben wie Name, Alter, Diagnose und Erkrankungsdatum die Gemeinde, in der das erkrankte Kind bei Diagnosestellung wohnte. Diese Angabe dient als Grundlage zur kartographischen Aufbereitung der regionalen Inzidenzen, die eine wichtige Aufgabe von Krebsregistern darstellt (1).

By means of ion chromatography the extensive and significantly higher loss of ions of G. pulex and G. fossarum in acid water (pH 3.0) as compared to neutral water is proved. While cations are being accumulated in the water, some ions (Na+, Cl−) leave the hemolymph in important percentage, others increase highly after being set free from the cells (K+ and Ca2+). The loss of cations with Asellus aquaticus in acid water (pH 3) is clearly lower than with Gammarus, and it is not significantly higher than when the animals are put into neutral water.

Intact plastids from cell suspensions of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Muscat de Frontignan, free of detectable contamination by other particles as judged by the distribution of organelle-specific marker enzymes and by electron microscopy, exhibit geranyl-diphosphate synthase activity (EC 2.5.1.1). This synthase activity remains stable after tryptic digestion of unlysed organelles and is enhanced by plastid disruption. We conclude that the enzyme is located within the organelle. The possibility of an isopentenyl diphosphate/dimethylallyl diphosphate translocating system which would play a major role in the regulation of monoterpene metabolism is discussed.

Abstract Tetrabasic lead sulfate (4BS) produced by two different methods (solution and paste) and from two different raw materials (tetragonal PbO and leady oxide) were charaterized by different analytical techniques. The techniques applied were wet-chemical methods, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The preparation method was observed to be the most decisive factor influencing the structure and the morphology of the 4BS pastes in this study.

Automatic flow injection methods for the determination of hydrogen peroxide, dichromate, formaldehyde and bicarbonate in dairy products are proposed. They are based on reaction with vanadium pentoxide, diphenyl-carbazide, fuchsine-sulphur dioxide and alizarin, respectively. Sample pre-treatment (paper and membrane filtration, dialysis) is widely discussed for on-line incorporation. The usefulness of these methods was tested by applying them to different commercial samples, satisfactory results being obtained in all instances.

Relationships between psychomotor retardation and EEG power spectrum in major depression.

In 63 depressed patients, the associations between severity of depression, psychomotor retardation, assessed by the Bech-Rafaelsen Melancholia Scale, and EEG spectral analysis were examined. Slow EEG activity (theta 2/alpha 1 bands) was positively and fast activity (alpha 3/beta bands) negatively correlated with the observed retardation. Out of the four retardation subitems (motor, verbal, intellectual and emotional), motor retardation was closest correlated with slow EEG activity.

The main morphometric and water quality characteristics of the 221 Italian reservoirs covering an area of at least 0.2 km2 is given. Most of the reservoirs are used for drinking water purposes, especially on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, where the more important cases of eutrophication have been found.
