The Crystal Barrel spectrometer at LEAR

The crystal Barrel spectrometer used at LEAR, CERN to study the products of pd annihilations is described. A 1380 element array of Csl crystals measures photons from the decay of π0, η, η′ and ω mesons. A segmented drift chamber in a 1.5T magnetic field is used to identify and measure charged particles. A fast on-line trigger on charged and neutral multiplicities and on the invariant mass of secondary particles is available. The performance of the detector is discussed.

Photoinhibition of spinach thylakoids was studied by examination the inactivation of different parts of the electron transport chain, the decline of the variable fluorescence and the loss of atrazine binding sites. The results obtained after photoinhibition at 20° C and 0° C revealed an inactivation at the QB-site of the D1-protein as the first event in the course of photoinhibition. The natural antioxidants glutathione and ascorbate as well as the enzymes SOD and catalase diminished photoinhibition to similar extents. Further characterization of the histidine gene cluster of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2): nucleotide sequence and transcriptional analysis of hisD.

We have further characterized the genomic region of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) that contains genes involved in the biosynthesis of histidine. A 2,357-base pair fragment contained in plasmid pSCH3328 that complemented hisD mutations has been sequenced. Computer analysis revealed an open reading frame that encodes a protein with significant homology to the Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Mycobacterium smegmatis hisD product, Saccharomyces cerevisiae HIS4C, and Neurospora crassa his3 gene products. First transformations of pyrano[3,4-b]indol-3-ones to salvadoricine and 2,3-diacylindoles

The readily available methylated pyrano[3,4-b]indol-3-ones 1a and 1b were hydrolyzed to furnish the 2-acetylindol-3-alkanoic acids 2 and 4. Compound 2 was easily transformed selectively to 2-acetyl-3-methylindole (3, salvadoricine). Substrate 1b reacts with molecular oxygen from the air only in the presence of a catalyst to give 2,3-diacetylindole (5) while 1a reacts with nitrosobenzene via a proposed Diels-Alder step to yield 2-acetylindole-3-carbaldehyde (6). The latter product can also be obtained in low yield from the reaction of 1a with molecular oxygen from the air.

Fuzzy formalizations of cognitive distance

Spatial training process allows more and more precise informations to be collected and memorized. The aim of this article is to describe a three steps training process based on three fuzzy formalizations of cognitive distance associated to three different types of informations : (1) expression of a linguistic relative distance based on fuzzy relation of closeness or/and remoteness, (2) expression of a linguistic absolute distance expressed by primary linguistic terms like short or long and (3) expression of a fuzzy metric absolute distance. A fourth part is devoted to expression of precise correspondance rule between linguistic and metric opinions described below.

In order to establish the prevalence of intrahepatic cholestasis (IHC) in chronic liver disease, we retrospectively evaluated the frequency of increased serum total bilirubin (STB), serum conjugated bilirubin (SCB) and serum alkaline phosphatase (SAP) levels in a cohort of 2520 patients with newly diagnosed chronic liver disease presenting over 2 years. 882 patients (35%) [mean age 52.2 years] had IHC involving abnormal levels of STB (mean 89.8 μmol/L), SCB (mean 52.5 μmol/L), and SAP (mean 5.7 μkat/L) together with a negative ultrasonic scan. Lower eyelid reconstruction by multiple subcutaneous pedicle flaps: a new method.

Abstract In this paper we present an original technique for the reconstruction of the full thickness of the lower eyelid after excision of neoplasms. The method is based on the mobilisation of multiple pedicle subcutaneous flaps outlined in the same eyelid and supported by a chondro-mucosal graft. From the analysis of some interesting applications carried out by the greatest scientists of that time, we conclude that the appropriate use of the pendulum in the classroom can be an easy way to introduce historical and epistemological evolution of basic physical concepts.

Artroplastia total no cementada en la coxartrosis secundaria a displasia y luxación congenita de cadera

Se revisan 13 prótesis no cementadas implantadas en 12 paciente s que presentaban una coxartrosis secundaria a una displasia congénita de cadera. Los paciente s han sido seguidos más de 2 años de evolución. En todos los casos se utilizó la via de abordaje postero-lateral. Se implantó siempre la prótesis tipo PCA procediéndose en 7 casos a la realización, a nivel acetabular, de un alo o autoinjerto complementario. A nivel femoral se utilizaron 7 vástagos estándar, 3 medianos y 3 largos para facilitar la restauración del centro rotatorio original de la cadera. Oil-in-water emulsions of different quantitative composition, containing milk powder and locust bean gum. as stabilizing agents, showed similar rheological behavior: time-dependent thixotropic character and yield stress. Thixograms obtained for each sample could be modelled through the Hahn equation for the different shear rates.
