Clinical significance of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay in chronic HBV carriers

PCR was evaluated as a clinical tool for use in accurate identification of the specific etiologic agent in chronic HBV carriers. The method was found to be valuable in diagnosis and for monitoring therapy, as well as for elucidation of genotypic variants of HBV in chronic HBV cases. By this means an HBV defective variant with alterations in the preSl/preS2 sequence was detected and is consequently described here.

A search for neutral higgs particles in Z$^0$ decays

Abstract The search in DELPHI data for neutral Higgs bosons is described. No candidate for the Standard Model Higgs is seen in Z0 decays to H 0 ν ν , H 0 μ + μ − or H0τ+τ− after selections that proved efficient for finding simulated H0. One remaining candidate for Z0 → H0e+e− is consistent with background. Together with our earlier studies, these results restrict the H0 mass to be above 38 GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level. No signal is found for decays of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model neutral Higgs bosons to τ+τ−. Limits are obtained for their decays to produce four jets.

Triterpene saponins from the roots ofAmpelozizyphus amazonicus

A new triterpene saponin was isolated from the roots of Ampelozizyphus amazonicus together with the known 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-20-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyljujubogenin and the known triterpenes melaleucic acid, 3 beta,27 alpha-dihydroxylup-20(29)-en-28 beta-oic acid, betulinic acid, betulin, lupeol. The structure of this saponin was elucidated as 3-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1----2)alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl]- 20-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyljujubogenin by spectral analysis and chemical transformations.

Multifractal Properties of Eigenstates in Weakly Disordered Two-Dimensional Systems without Magnetic Field

In order to investigate the electronic states in weakly disordered 2D samples very large (up to 180 000 * 180 000) secular matrices corresponding to the Anderson Hamiltonian are diagonalized. The analysis of the resulting wave functions shows multifractal fluctuations on all length scales in the considered systems. The set of generalized (fractal) dimensions and the singularity spectrum of the fractal measure are determined in order to completely characterize the eigenfunctions.

An inductive inference approach to classification

In this paper, we introduce a formal framework for investigating the relationship of inductive inference and the task of classification. We give the first results on the relationship between functions that can be identified in the limit and functions that can be acquired from unclassified objects only. Moreover, we present results on the complexity of classification functions and the preconditions necessary in order to allow the computation of such functions.

In a controlled study, the cardiac involvement and arrhythmia profile of 32 patients with acromegaly were correlated with endocrine parameters (somatomedine C, growth hormone), clinical score and duration of the disease. Data were compared with those of 50 controls free of cardiac disease. Stress ECG, 24 h Holter monitoring and echocardiography were performed. Supraventricular premature complexes occurred no more often in acromegalics than in controls. Neuromuscular adaptations and serum hormones in women during short-term intensive strength training

The effects were investigated in ten women of intensive heavy resistance strength training lasting for 3 weeks on electromyographic (EMG) activity, muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and voluntary force production characteristics of leg extensor muscles. Blood samples for the determinations of serum hormones were taken from five of the subjects. Significant increases occurred in the higher force portions of the isometric force-time curve with an increase of 9.7 (SD 8.4)% (P less than 0.01) in maximal peak force. Abstract The stem bark of Caloncoba glauca has yielded three friedelane triterpenes of which two are characterized by the loss of C-30 and the presence of a C-27, C-15 lactone. They were identified, with considerable use of long-range C H coupling studies, as the known compound trichadonic acid (3-oxofriedelan-27-oic acid) and two new 30-norfriedelane derivatives, 3,27-dioxo-30-norfriedelan-20(29)-en-27,15α-lactone (caloncobalactone) and 3,27-dioxo-21β-hydroxy-30-norfriedelan-20(29)-en-17,15α-lactone (21β-hydroxycaloncoba lactone).

Thermodynamic parameters of the interaction between Co(II) bovine carbonic anhydrase and anionic inhibitors

The pH dependence of the apparent affinity constants of perchlorate for cobalt(II)bovine carbonic anhydrase II has been measured by electronic absorption spectroscopy. The obtained data have been analyzed in terms of the ionization of two acidic groups of CoBCAII, and the affinity of perchlorate for the two water-containing species of the enzyme have been estimated. Furthermore, the affinity constants of nitrate, perchlorate, and azide for CoBCAII in the temperature range 5 degrees C-30 degrees C have been determined by spectrophotometric titrations at pH 7. We examined 62 species in 45 genera of the cactus subfamily Cactoideae; all had collateral cortical bundles that permeated the broad, water-storing inner cortex and extended to the base of the outer, photosynthetic palisade cortex. Mean distance between cortical bundles was 0.75 mm, similar to the mean spacing (0.74 mm) of veins in leaves of Pereskia, a genus of relict leaf-bearing cacti. In 16 species, both young and extremely old stem cortex was available for study: in all of these, older bundles had larger amounts of phloem than did younger bundles, indicating that phloem had been produced for many years. Attention is drawn to a theory of the statistical mechanics (SM) of the integrable models in 1+1 dimension — a theory of ‘soliton statistical mechanics’ classical and quantum [1–17]. This SM provides a generic example of integrable nonlinearity interacting with disorder. A field theoretic realization of a universal bundle for gravity

Abstract Based upon a local vector supersymmetry algebra, we discuss the general structure of the quantum action for topological gravity theories in arbitrary dimensions. The precise form of the action depends on the particular dimension, and also on the moduli space of interest. We describe the general features by examining a theory of topological gravity in two dimensions, with a moduli space specified by vanishing curvature two-form. It is shown that these topological gravity models together with their observables provide a field theoretic realization of a universal bundle for gravity.

Several studies suggest that diabetes is associated with a hypercoagulable state. Therefore determination of thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT) could represent a sensitive parameter for specific detection of a latent activation of the clotting system. The present study documents increased plasma TAT in a heterogeneous group of non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients. The finding of increased TAT levels both in diabetic patients with vascular complications and in vascular disease patients without diabetes suggests a relationship between existing vascular disease and the hemostatic mechanism that produces augmented thrombin activity.
