On Fixed Point (Trial) Methods for Free Boundary Problems

1992

In this note we consider the trial methods for solving steady state free boundary problems. For two test examples (electrochemical machining and continuous casting) we discuss the convergence of a fixed point method. Moreover, using the techniques of shape optimization we introduce a modification of the method, which gives us superlinear convergence rate. This is also confirmed numerically.

The global cracking laws for a finite-element model of no-tension material

1992

Abstract For perfect no-tension materials (NRT) the validity of the local stability postulate of Drucker, well known in plasticity, has been assumed so far and utilized to derive the local cracking laws, which relate cracking strain states and stress states to each other. On this base a finite-element (FE) model with suitable constitutive behaviour for the single FE is presented. Classical FE approaches enforce the cracking laws at the Gauss points of the FEs. In this work it is shown that taking into account cracking strains, suitably modelled, over the whole domain of the FE and making use of an energy approach lead to general cracking laws describing the constitutive behaviour of the who…

A note on Δn ≠ 0 Stark transitions in hydrogenlike atoms

1992

In a gaseous helium or hydrogen target slow muons or antiprotons are captured into orbits with a high principal quantum number (n = 15 to 50) to form (μ− α)+ ions, (pα)+ ions, or (pp) atoms respectively. In the subsequent deexcitation process Stark mixing of the intermediary states plays an important role. The successful Mainz Cascade Model assumed Δn = 0 for the Stark transitions, although formally no such selection rule exists. This note examines the reasons why Δn ≠ 0 Stark transitions play only a negligible role in the deexcitation cascade.

1992

In a previous paper, in which the experimental conditions of the present research are fully described (Parrot et al., this issue), heart rate (HR) was studied in 60 male and in 60 female subjects in response to a pile-driver noise (P), a gunfire noise (G), a road traffic noise (T), and an intermittent pink noise (R), all noises being emitted at the same LAeq = 75 dB for 15 min. Digital pulse level (PL) responses were concomitantly surveyed by the use of pulse oximetry, allowing continuous arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) readings. An index of pulse reactivity (PRI) could be calculated. Arterial blood pressure was measured 7 times from the beginning to the end of each trial. At rest, within…

The Asynchronous Leontief Model

1992

International audience; The traditional dynamic Leontief model is synchronous: every vertex acts simultaneously. A model with delays of action has been proposed, but it still remains synchronous. In this paper we propose an asynchronous version of the model that allows realistic computations. We fiurnish an algorithm and a program.

What does computer support for cooperative work mean? a structurational analysis of computer supported cooperative work

1992

Abstract Technical developments in electronic communication and computing coupled with new understanding of relationships between computers and work processes has given impetus to a significant amount of research in the area of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). Much of this work, however, lacks strong theoretical foundations, and there is no clear definition of CSCW, the major research questions of the field, or appropriate strategies for research. In this paper we suggest Giddens' theory of structuration as a conceptual foundation for CSCW research and propose a formal definition for CSCW. We conclude by discussing seven implications of the framework for future research into: (a)…

Production of strange particles in the hadronic decays of the Z0

1992

Abstract An analysis of the production of strange particles from the decays of the Z 0 boson into multihadronic final states is presented. The analysis is based on about 90 000 selected hadronic Z 0 decays collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1990. K s 0 , K ∗± , Λ( Λ ) and Ξ − ( Ξ + ) have been identified by their characteristic decays. The measured production cross sections are compared with predictions of the Lund Monte Carlo tuned to data at PEP/PETRA energies.

LOCAL-MOMENT AND ITINERANT ANTIFERROMAGNETISM IN THE HEAVY-FERMION SYSTEM CE(CU1-XNIX)2GE2

1992

Elastic and inelastic neutron-scattering studies on the system Ce(Cu1−xNix)2Ge2 are reported. These measurements are complemented by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, heat capacity, thermal expansion, electrical resistivity and thermopower. The results reveal an interesting T-x phase diagram consisting of two different antiferromagnetic phases for x 0.5. Further experimental evidence for different types of antiferromagnetic ordering derives from a line-shape analysis of the quasielastic neutron-scattering intensity, from magnetization and thermopower experiments.

1992

Capnometry, i.e. measurement of CO2 concentration (cCO2, vol%) and calculation of the respective CO2 partial pressure (pCO2, mmHg), is simple to apply, but the user must understand its principles of operation in order to appreciate its power and its limitations. However, sidestream capnometers use to dry the humidified respired gas (37 degrees C, pH2O 47 mmHg) for methodological reasons, thus increasing pCO2 by ca. 6% which, in turn, requires correction. With infrared spectroscopy, overestimation of pCO2 in presence of N2O and underreporting of pCO2 in presence of O2 also require to be corrected. These require either knowledge of the respective gas concentrations (mainstream analyzers) or a…

Organochlorines as Environmental Tainting Substances: Taste Panel Study and Chemical Analyses of Incubated Mussels

1992

Lake mussels (Anodonta piscinalis) incubated in freshwater stations upstream and downstream of a large pulp mill were studied for tainting by a panel of 18 persons. The tasted animal muscle and tissue water samples, and composites of other simultaneously incubated mussels were analyzed for organochlorine compounds. Bad taste scores were obtained for mussels from the nearest station downstream to the pulp mill and were significantly (p < 0.001 **) higher than those from other stations. A similar difference was observed for the measured chlorophenol, chloroanisole and chloroveratrole, chlorocymene and PCB contents. Chloroanisoles and chloroveratroles were indicated to form the main tai…

Metafísica y Teoría del conocimiento

1992

Polarization effects in exclusive semi-leptonic Λc and Λb charm and bottom baryon decays

1992

Abstract We discuss polarization effects in semi-leptonic decays of polarized and unpolarized heavy Λ-type baryons into heavy and into light Λ-type baryons. We use the non-leptonic decay of the daughter baryon and the leptonic decay of the Woff-shell into a lepton pair as polarization analyzers to analyze the polarization of the daughter baryon and the Woff-shell. Technically this is done by writing down joint angular decay distributions. We calculate the values of the various asymmetry parameters that characterize the angular dependence of the angular decay distributions where we use the predictions of the heavy quark effective theory (HQET) supplemented by simple ansatze for the q2-depend…
