Antitumour activity of mononuclear phagocytes: role of tumour necrosis factor alpha.

1992

Tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF) is a cytokine produced by mononuclear phagocytes (MP) originally discovered for its cytotoxic activity on tumour cell targets. It was subsequently demonstrated that, in addition to its oncolytic potential, TNF exerts a wide variety of activities on the host defensive system against malignancies. This article briefly reviews the current concepts on the role of TNF in the antitumour activity of MP.

Isopodes Aselloïdes stygobies d’Espagne récoltés par J. Notenboom et I. Meijers, III — Le genre Proasellus: A — Espèces oculées ou microphtalmes

1992

Samples collected in underground waters of Spain by Ine Meijers and Jos Notenboom demonstrated the presence of some oculated asellids previously known: Proasellus coiffaiti, P. coxalis, and P. meridianus, and also four new stygophilous species, more or less depigmented, with different stages of regression of the ocular system: P. beticus n. sp., P. ortizi n. sp., P. aragonensis n. sp., and P. ebrensis n. sp. These forms represent relict populations of ancient epigean species. The anophthalmous species of the Aquitanian Basin, Pyrenees, and Iberian Peninsula are more closely related to P. beticus and P. ortizi than to the Recent epigean species P. coxalis and P. meridianus.

RPA in wavefunction representation

1992

The RPA is formulated in subspaces of coordinate-like and momentum-like I ph operators. This allows to embed a large class of approximative schemes into a generalized RPA treatment. We give a detailed formulation in terms of wavefunctions in coordinate space which is ideally suited to practical programming. In particular, we work out the reduction to spherical tensors in the case of spherical symmetry which is most often the starting point in finite Fermion systems.

Population structure and mitochondrial DNA gene flow in Old World populations of Drosophila subobscura

1992

An extensive survey of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction polymorphism in 156 isofemale lines from 29 different geographic populations of Drosophila subobscura distributed throughout the Old World was carried out. Ten restriction enzymes were used, five of which revealed restriction site polymorphism. Of the 31 restriction sites detected, 13 were found to be polymorphic. Comparisons with the mtDNA map of Drosophila yakuba indicate that the variable sites are mainly concentrated in protein genes, especially those corresponding to the NADH complex. A total of 13 different haplotypes were observed, two of which (haplotypes I and II) are quite frequent and widely distributed throughout the p…

Measurements of Tumor Blood Flow Using Intraperitoneal Deuterium and 2H-NMR Spectroscopy

1992

Tumors usually have a sparse, disorganized, and inefficient vascular network that leaves a large fraction of the tumor cells in an oxygen deprived and hostile metabolic microenvironment. Hence tumor blood flow, or more correctly nutritive perfusion, has important interactions with treatment efficacy. For example, hypoxic tumor cells, which occur in tumors with low blood flow, are less susceptible to radiation and are probably responsible for most radiation treatment failures (Adams, 1981). Similarly, cytotoxic drug delivery could be predicted by blood flow measurements, with clear implications regarding the expected success of chemotherapy. Thus, the ability to conveniently measure tumor bl…

Nucleon and delta masses in QCD

1992

Using the positivity of the path integral measure of $QCD$ and defining a structure for the quark propagator in a background field according to the fluxon scenario for confinement, we calculate and compare the correlators for nucleon and delta. From their shape we elucidate about the origin of their mass difference, which in our simplified scenario is due to the tensor structure in the propagator. This term arises due to a dynamical mechanism which is responsible simultaneously for confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. Finally we discuss, by comparing the calculated correlators with the Lehmann representation, the possibility that a strong CP and/or P violation occurs as a c…

Hepatocyte growth factor/hepatopoietin A is expressed in fat-storing cells from rat liver but not myofibroblast-like cells derived from fat-storing c…

1992

Hepatocyte growth factor/hepatopoietin A is a complete mitogen for parenchymal liver cells, and its expression is increased as an early response to acute liver injury. To identify the liver cell population responsible for hepatocyte growth factor gene expression, we investigated tissue sections and isolated and purified cell fractions from normal rat liver by in situ and Northern blot hybridization. Hepatocyte growth factor transcripts were present in sinusoidal liver cells, which were preferentially located in the periportal parenchyma. Northern hybridization analysis of RNA isolated from purified liver cell fractions demonstrated that HGF messenger RNA is present only in fat-storing cells…

Relation of endocrine and cardiac findings in acromegalics

1992

Cardiac involvement in 32 acromegalics was related to endocrine parameters, clinical score and duration of the disease as well as compared to that of 50 controls free of cardiac disease. Stress ECG, 24h Holter monitoring and echocardiography revealed that supraventricular premature complexes did not occur more often in acromegalics than in controls, both prevalence and severity of ventricular arrhythmia, however, were higher in patients compared to controls: 15/32 (48%) acromegalics had complex ventricular arrhythmia as compared with 6/50 (12%) normal subjects (p less than 0.01). Repetitive ventricular arrhythmia was manifest in 10/32 (31%) patients but only in 4/50 (8%) controls (p less th…

Molecular Structure of the Arthropod Hemocyanins

1992

Hemocyanin is an extracellular, blue protein that occurs in high concentrations in the blood of many arthropods, including spiders, scorpions, horseshoe crabs, crustaceans, and at least two centipedes. Serving as an ### oxygen carrier, it is functionally equivalent to hemoglobin, but performs reversible oxygen binding between two copper ions. Hemocyanin is composed of a number of subunits that assemble in an extremely large macro-molecular entity. These particles, which are similar in size to viruses or ribosomes, exhibit a complex allosteric behavior during oxygen binding. There is growing evidence that this functional plasticity has evolved upon, and answers to, ecophysiological constrain…

Topical Depth and Writing Quality in Student EFL Compositions

1992

ABSTRACT This study tests a method to describe the relationship between coherence and writing quality by using topical structure analysis. Originally the method was used to examine short professional texts written in the mother tongue (L1) but in the present study it is applied to short compositions written in English by students learning this foreign language (EFL). The analyses showed that what characterized good writers was the ability to develop the topics in their compositions more evenly across several topic levels than mid‐quality writers and especially the poor writers. Good writers were more homogeneous (measured by the size of standard deviation) as a group in handling topics at h…

A New Approach To The Identification Of Cognitive Conflicts In The Repertory Grid: An Illustrative Case Study

1992

Abstract The concept of cognitive conflicts and its relation to the success of psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy are discussed. According to this model of therapy, patients should achieve insight into their conscious as well as unconscious conflicts. Therefore in the present study we assumed that demonstrable cognitive changes would occur over treatment for chronic pain, as measured by Kelly's (1955) Repertory Grid Test. Grids were analyzed with regard to conflicts on the basis of the concept of unbalanced triads. A triad may be described as unbalanced when logical inconsistencies can be demonstrated on the basis of a correlative comparison of three corresponding construct pairs. Co…

Analisi morfometrica computerizzata delle variazioni strutturali della diafisi di ossa lunghe umane in rapporto all'età.

1992

The authors studied the micro - structural changes of aging long bones. The results show: an increase in the number of the osteons; a sensible decrease in their sectional area; a disappearance of the outer fundamental system until the sixth decade, which undergoes no significant changes afterwards. Whereas the area of the haversian canals and the percentage of the haversian system undergo no significant changes. The data suggest that the skeletal remodeling tends to keep constant, during the lfetime, the quota of the haversian system and the relation between the latter and the interstital system, through an increase in numebr of the osteons which involves a decrease in their size.

Learning a class of regular expressions via restricted subset queries

1992

A wide class of regular expressions non-representable as unions of “smaller” expressions is shown to be polynomial-time learnable via restricted subset queries from arbitrary representative examples “reflecting” the loop structure and a way the input example is obtained from the unknown expression. The corresponding subclass of regular expressions of loop depth at most 1 is shown to be learnable from representative examples via membership queries. A wide class of expressions with loops A+ of arbitrary loop depth is shown to be learnable via restricted subset queries from arbitrary examples.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and autoimmune liver diseases

1992

Anti-HCV tests were positive in 18–45% of sera from patients with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis. High gammaglobulin levels may result in false positive results, however, some sera show true positivity. PCR testing of such sera is necessary in order to determine whether HCV is directly involved in specific forms of the disease.

Examinations of aphasic patients by using cognitive tasks were based on the hypothesis that semantically evoked potentials correlate to the processing of information in the different speech processing of information in the different speech processing areas. It was found that patients with Broca aphasia generated synchronization potentials in the Wernicke area in contrast to Wernicke patients. We suppose a correlation between the timing in sensorial speech processing areas and the generation of synchronization potentials.

New Higgs Signatures in Supersymmetry with Spontraneously Broken R Parity"

1992

Higgs production from $Z$ decay in supersymmetry with spontaneous broken R parity proceeds mostly by the Bjorken process as in the standard model. However, the corresponding production rates can be weaker than in the standard model (SM), especially in the low mass region. This will substantially weaken the Higgs boson mass limits derived from LEP1. More strikingly, the main Higgs decay channel is "invisible", over most of the mass range accessible to LEP1, leading to events with large missing energy carried by majorons. This possibility should be taken into account in the planning of Higgs boson search strategies not only at LEP but also at high energy supercolliders.

Elongación ósea definición, objetivos e historia

1992

Acetylcholine At Motor Nerves: Storage, Release, and Presynaptic Modulati On By Autoreceptors and Adrenoceptors

1992

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the modulation of acetylcholine release from the motor endplate by presynaptic receptors. An individual neuron can regulate its function, the release of transmitters or modulators, through the activation of local feedback loops. After escaping the neuronal membrane and entering the synaptic cleft (or extracellular space), the transmitter activates both the receptors localized at the endorgan (postsynaptic receptors) and the receptors localized at the nerve terminal within its diffusion radius (so-called presynaptic or neuronal receptors). Stimulation of presynaptic receptors triggers the generation of intracellular signals that modify ion channels o…

Sulodexide and the microcirculatory component in microphlebopathies.

1992

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study was carried out in 36 patients, aged 30 to 50 years, to evaluate the effectiveness of oral sulodexide in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency due to idiopathic varices. Patients were allocated at random to receive either oral sulodexide as 2 capsules (each containing 250 lipoproteinolipase releasing units) twice daily or 2 identical placebo capsules twice daily over a period of 45 days. Using strain gauge plethysmographic data, assessments were made of the microcirculatory effects of treatment by calculating the coefficient of capillary filtration from measurements made on both legs of each patient on entry and after 30 and 45 days of treatm…
