Abstract Since 1989, the Siemens lithostar plus, an upgrade of the lithostar with the ultrasonically guided overhead module, has been available for clinical use. This unit may be used for the treatment of either biliary or urinary calculi. We report on 75 patients with urinary calculi treated between March 1989 and June 1990 with the lithostar overhead module. Stone localization showed a rate of: caliceal stones 33.5%, pelvic stones 44%, upper ureteral stones 9.3% and lower ureter stones 13%. The overall disintegration rate was 86%, with a stone-free rate after 3 months of 78%.

Mass Yields in the Very Asymmetric Fission of 249Cf(nth,f)

Independent fission yields and fragment kinetic energies in the very asymmetric (A=87−72) fission of 249Cf have been measured using the mass separator LOHENGRIN at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. The mass yields were found to be up to a factor of 100 higher than predicted in the US ENDF-V file. A preliminary evaluation of the isotopic yields shows a strong increase of the proton odd-even effect from 7 % to 15 %. This can be explained by a decreasing excitation energy in this very asymmetric region.

Methods for the Identification of Tainting Terpenoids and other Compounds from Algae

Off-flavour compounds produced by algae in freshwater ecosystems were studied for their structure using integrated sensory and spectroscopic methods: mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Both solvent extraction and thermal desorption were used to isolate and to introduce the compounds into gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared (GC/FTIR) systems. Study of orientation of 3-Jet events in Z(0) hacronic decays using the DELPHY detector

The study of the orientation of three-jet events from e+ e- --> Z0 --> multi-hadrons is presented, in particular the polar angle distributions of the thrust axis and of the normal to the three-jet plane, and the azimuthal correlations between the hadron plane and the one defined by the beam and thrust axes. The data are compared with results at lower energy and with QCD predictions. Good agreement with QCD predictions is observed. The scalar gluon theory is excluded by the data.

Condensation nuclei at the German Antarctic Station “Georg von Neumayer”

Evaluations of measurements of the tropospheric surface condensation nuclei at the German Antarctic station for the last 8 years are presented. They show clearly the annual variation of the concentration with a maximum in austral summer, as previously seen by other investigators. In addition, a pronounced increase of the concentration of 9.63% per year has been found. The size distributions of the condensation nuclei of measurements over 2 years are evaluated and discussed. Human platelet membranes were used to characterize the receptor binding properties of the specific thromboxane receptor antagonist 3H-SQ 29548 and the displacement of 3H-SQ 29548 from its binding site by the new thromboxane receptor antagonist Bay u 3405. The specific binding of 3H-SQ 29548 was saturable with an association rate constant of 1 x 10(-11) mol-1 min-1 and a dissociation rate constant of 0.032 min-1. Stochastic Response on Non-Linear Systems under Parametric Non-Gaussian Agencies

The probabilistic response characterization of non-linear systems subjected to non-normal delta correlated parametric excitation is obtained. In order to do this an extension of both Ito’s differential rule and the Fokker-Planck equation is presented, enabling one to account for the effect of the non-normal input. The validity of the approach reported here is confirmed by results obtained by means of a Monte Carlo simulation.

Behavior of the nuclear charge radii systematics in thes-dshell from muonic atom measurements

The present work extends the systematics of nuclear charge radii obtained by the method of muonic atoms to nuclei with 8\ensuremath{\le}Z,N\ensuremath{\le}20. The accuracy of the measured muonic Lyman transition energies of generally \ensuremath{\le}10 eV leads to a precision in the model-independent nuclear charge radii differences of 2--3 am for the isotope shifts and 4--9 am for isotone shifts. Both isotope and isotone shifts within the s-d shell behave ``anomalously'' with respect to the systematics of heavier nuclei. Slowed abduction saccades in bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia

Horizontal eye movements were investigated in 65 patients with bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia utilizing direct current electro-oculography. Abduction saccades were slowed in 35 patients (53.8%), being hypermetric in 65.7% of them. Slowing of abduction saccades is attributed to impaired inhibition of the tonic resting activity of the antagonistic medial rectus muscle. Experimental data indicate that this slowing results from a lesion of an uncrossed connection between the pontine reticular formation and the oculomotor nucleus. Synthesis and characterization of V2O5SiO2ZrO2 pigments by sol-gel method

Abstract Polymeric gels in the V2O5 SiO2 ZrO2 system were prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), zirconium(IV)-n-propoxide and vanadium(IV) oxyacetylacetonate, precursors. The effects of prehydrolysis time of TEOS and drying gel method on the stabilization of tetragonal zirconia in the silica amorphous matrix, nucleation and growth of the zircon (ZrSiO4) phase, and stabilization of the blue and green stains of vanadium zircon were studied. Results provide evidence that long time of prehydrolysis and fast drying do not favour zircon crystallization but stabilize the tetragonal zirconia in the amorphous matrix.

Recycling of degraded polyethylene: Blends with nylon 6

Abstract Recycled polyethylene can be used for blending with nylon to obtain blends with mechanical properties better than those of blends with virgin polyethylene. Moreover, the mechanical properties of these blends are very close to and, in some cases, better than those of the pure nylon and those of blends made with functionalized polyolefines. The carbonyl groups of the photo-oxidized polyethylene react with amino end-groups of nylon 6, giving rise to graft copolymers which act as interfacial agents between the two incompatible phases. Large degrees of photo-oxidation of the polyethylene and intense mixing improve the properties of the blends.

The main result of this paper is a comparison theorem between the Mean Exit Time function defined on ω and the Mean Exit Time from a geodesic ball of the complex projective space ℂℙ n (λ) which involves a characterization of the geodesic balls among the domain ω. In order to achieve this, we prove a comparison theorem for the mean curvatures of hypersurfaces parallel to the boundary of ω, using the Index Lemma for Submanifolds.

Kinetic behaviour of a structural phase transition in Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers studied by energy dispersive x-ray reflectivity

Various multilayers of Cd stearate were prepared by means of the Langmuir-Blodgett technique and investigated at T = Ts - ΔT (Ts, melting point of LB film). The x-ray scattering spectrum was recorded in several time intervals using an energy dispersive set up. For ΔT = 3 ... 9 K the observed intensity reduction of Bragg peaks, which corresponds to the multilayer periodicity, is recorded as a function of time. In addition new peaks appear.
