Relativistic corrections in quasi-free electro-disintegration of the deuteron

The role of relativistic effects in deuteron break-up by electrons is investigated for quasi-free kinematics by including the lowest-order relativistic corrections beyond the nonrelativistic limit to electromagnetic operators and by wave-function boost. In particular, the dependence of form factors and structure functions on the frame in which they are calculated is studied. It is found that the inclusion of these corrections leads to observables that are less frame-dependent than for a pure nonrelativistic description. Nonlinearities in amoxycillin pharmacokinetics. I. Disposition studies in the rat.

Several features of amoxycillin pharmacokinetics in man are not well known in spite of the extensive clinical use of the antibiotic. In this paper it is demonstrated that amoxycillin disposition kinetics in rats is clearly nonlinear, and that this may be due mainly to its elimination mechanisms. At different intravenous bolus dose levels, and in steady-state perfusion studies, the most striking feature is an increased renal clearance as dose increases (from 3.5 to 7.0 mg kg-1 for intravenous bolus, and from 4.6 to 20.0 micrograms min-1 for intravenous perfusions). The effect of antenatal intravenous immunoglobulin on ascending intrauterine infection after preterm premature rupture of the membranes: a pilot study

Ascending infection is a serious threat in pregnancies complicated by preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PROM). In a controlled randomized prospective pilot study (n = 18) we have evaluated the effect of intravenous IgM enriched immunoglobulin given to the mothers 24-48 hours after preterm PROM in reducing ascending infection. Using a validated infection score from laboratory and clinical data at birth, we found a significant reduction of probable infection in the neonates of the treatment group compared to the control group (p = 0.0022). Abstract Lactitol dihydrate, C 12 H 24 O 11 ·2H 2 O, is tetragonal, space group P 4 3 2 1 2 with cell dimensions a and b = 8.762(1), c = 45.500(3) A, and V = 3493.2(3) A 3 ; Z = 8, D x = 1.45 Mg.m −3 , λ(Cu- K α ) = 1.54056 A, μ = 1.108 mm −1 , F (000) = 1632, and T = 23°. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least-squares calculations to R = 0.054 for 2037 unique observed reflections. There are three intra- and twelve inter-molecular hydrogen bonds in the structure. Bond lengths and angles accord quite well with the mean values of related structures. The galactopyranosyl ring has a chair of conformation.

Study of Cellular DIMA Content by Flow Cytometry in Primary Bladder Carcinomas

A prospective study of cellular DNA content by flow cytometry was performed on a nonconsecutive series of 67 patients undergoing diagnostic and/or therapeutic transurethral resection for primary urothelial bladder carcinoma. DNA-aneuploidy was present in 82% of the cases (55/67), while multiclonality was found in 45% of the DNA-aneuploid cases (25/55). DNA-ploidy was much more strictly correlated with histological grading (p less than 0.005) than with papillary or non-papillary growth pattern (p less than 0.05) or T staging (p less than 0.05). Therapeutic Alliance: What Can be Learned from Case Studies?

Two different video-taped short-term psychotherapies were rated on therapeutic alliance for 27 sessions. The ratings were based on two methods: the Penn Helping Alliance Scales (Penn-HAS) and the Therapeutic Alliance Rating Scale (TARS). Both scales provide separate scores for the therapist and the patient. After checking the reliabilities of the ratings, the strength and course of the alliance formation are compared within and across therapies. Roentgenological observations on vocal fold length-changes with special reference to register transition and open/covered voice

This paper examines the length-changes of the vocal folds as a function of voice pitch. Changes in normalized vocal fold elongation (strain) were measured indirectly from calcification points in several laryngeal structures from roentgenological exposures during singing. Changes in vocal fold strain are shown to occur mainly in the register transition area, i.e. the area within which all register changes take place. Changes in vocal fold strain appeared similar in male and female subjects. R-Process Abundances and Nuclear Properties Far from Stability

Recent measurements of β-decay properties of the ‘waiting-point’ nuclei 79Cu, 80Zn and 130Cd, together with new QRPA shell-model predictions of so far unknown N ≃ 50 and N ≃ 82 isotopes in the r-process path, have allowed to explain the detailed isotopic composition in the A ≃ 80 and A ≃ 130 r-abundance peaks. The correlation between nuclear data far from stability and r-abundances suggests that the r-process involves a high-neutron-density β-flow equilibrium environment. Based on these results, the r-process components of nuclei in the 90 ≤ A ≤ 100 mass range were predicted for freeze-out conditions (nn ≃ 1020, T9 ≃ 1) and compared to the solar-system r-process abundances.

BEM application on an external problem comparison with both theoretical and finite elements results and observations on divergence strip

Abstract By means of a computer program the Boundary Element Method is applied to a central hole in an undefined plate with uniform load along the boundary. Results are compared with those obtained by Kirsch's theoretical solution and a previous analysis by the Finite Element Method. The calculus of percentage error shows the advantage of the Boundary Element Method on the external problem with regard to the Finite Element Method. The error causes near the boundary internal points are analysed with the existence of a strip, where the result is not reliable in evidence.

Abstract CaCuO2 and Ca2CuO3 are readily obtained by thermal decomposition of two new calcium and copper formates, CaCu(HCOO)4 and Ca2Cu(HCOO)6. These chemical-precursor based syntheses, while overcoming problems related to the stoichiometry of the final products, involve very short diffusion path lengths. This, in turn, results in soft treatments yielding pure phases constituted by submicrometer (≈0.4 μm) homogeneous particles.

The interaction between a charged monolayer of fatty acid molecules on the surface of a CdCl2 aqueous solution and the ions below has been investigated by means of X-ray Reflection and Grazing-Incidence Diffraction. The relationship between cobalt, copper and zinc content of soils and the vegetables grown in them is discussed. Samples of soil and edible vegetables were taken from 15 different sites, corresponding to four agricultural areas exposed to different degrees of environmental pollution: high industrial and traffic, high industrial and urban, and low industrial and urban pollution. Some morphologic changes induced by Nd:YAG laser on the noncoated enamel surface: A scanning electron microscopy study

The enamel surface layer of some human teeth was treated with the low-energy Nd:YAG laser at 8 mJ pulse energy. These samples were previously etched with 0.05 M orthophosphoric acid to reduce the surface reflection. The treated samples, as well as the control samples, were widely studied by scanning electron microscopy, and, in the lased group, significant morphologic changes affecting the enamel surface were observed. Those changes reveal principally the loss of the typical surface structure of the acid-etched enamel. A phase II trial of citrovorum factor, 500 mg/m2/week, plus 5-fluorouracil, 400 mg/m2/week on day 1, and cisplatin, 20 mg/m2/week on day 2, was carried out in a group of 40 patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma. A partial response with a mean duration of 8.4+ months was achieved in 24% of patients, a minimal response with a mean duration of 5.4 months was obtained in 6% of patients, and a stabilization of 6.2 months was achieved in 41%. Los acreedores censalistas de la ciudad de valencia llevaron un pleito contra el municipio por impago de pensiones desde 1814 a 1834. El resultado fue la venta judicial de los bienes de propios, que fueron adjudicados a comerciantes e individuos pertenecientes a la burguesia urbana. El municipio no pudo evitarlo a pesar de estar controlado por los liberales, en el poder a partir de 1835. La falta de ingresos para paliar la deuda se esgrimio como factor condicionante para no llegar a un acuerdo. Sin embargo, ante el anuncio de una reforma tributaria en 1845, se planeo un arreglo que dio por terminado el contencioso.

Chromatography with dense gases

A capillary restrictor for supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) with CO2 was made by using a micro torch and fine emery cloths or grinding blocks. This restrictor could be drawn out either directly from the end of the analytical capillary column, or from a short piece of any capillary, which was then connected to the analytical column by standard techniques. It was found that the base current of a flame ionisation detector (FID) depends strongly on the position of the capillary end with respect to the FID flame tip and on the CO2 grade, of course. Best results have been achieved at around 5 to 7 mm distance between the restrictor and the flame tip ends, and using SFC grade CO2.

Electronic Shell Structure in Icosahedral Metal Clusters

The shell structure of valence electrons in icosahedral and cuboctahedral simple metal clusters is studied using the free electron model and the Huckel model. The shell structure in a 1415 atom icosahedral cluster has still similarities with that of a spherical cluster. The effect of the finite temperature on the shell structure in liquid clusters is discussed.
