On the phase diagram of[N(CH3)4]2ZnCl4under uniaxial stress

Abstract Optical measurement and microscopic observations have been performed of single crystals of (TMA)2ZnCl4 with the aim to establish its phase diagram in the coordinates temperature-uniaxial stress σ. Stress-induced shifts of transition temperatures have been evaluated. For stresses exceeding 4.5 MPa two new monoclinic phases are reported, tentatively labeled as VIII and IX, both with the monoclinic axis b.

Karyological and Molecular Characterization of Mullus surmuletus and Mullus barbatus(Pisces, Mullidae).

The modal diploid number of 44 chromosomes has been found in Mullus surmuletus and Mullus barbatus (Pisces, Mullidae). Two middle-sized subtelocentric chromosomes are involved in nucleolus organization (NORs) in both Mullus species. Despite similarity in the NOR location, valuable differences in the restriction pattern of the ribosomal genes have been observed.

Neutron diffraction experiments on UCu4+xAl8−x

Abstract Neutron diffraction experiments are reported on UCu4+xAl8−x for concentrations 0.1≤ x ≤1.9 and temperatures 1.6 K≤T≤300 K. For x ≤ 1 these compounds undergo antiferromagnetic phase transitions into a collinear AF I-type structure. with the magnetic moments aligned along the tetragonal c-axis and alternating order within the a−b planes. With increasing concentration the ordering temperatures decrease and moment compensation due to a Kondo-type interaction develops for x>1.

Abstract An adsorbate in the strong binding and small corrugation limit is studied. The resulting two-dimensional fluid is treated in the adiabatic approximation: the translations of the heavy molecules are treated classically, whereas the molecular quantum degrees of freedom are modelled by interacting two state tunneling systems. The complete temperature/coverage phase diagram is obtained to a high degree of precision by a new combination of finite size scaling ideas with Path Integral Monte Carlo techniques. Electromagnetic polarizabilities of nucleons bound in 12C and 16O

Abstract The polarizabilities of nucleons imbedded in 12C and 16O nuclei are measured via Compton scattering of 61 and 77 MeV photons, leading to α N = (11.5±0.8±2.1) × 10 −4 fm 3 and β N = (2.5∓0.8∓2.1) × 10 −4 fm 3 in close agreement with the free-nucleon values.

Abstract Some aspects of larval behaviour in two species of trogid beetles, Trox bispidus (Pontoppidan) from temperate Europe and Afromorgus tuberosus (Klug) from tropical Africa, have been studied experimentally. From the results obtained it emerges that the rise of the newborn larvae towards the soil surface is imputable to a simple negative geotropism. Larval food relocation also contributes to reducing aggressive interactions at the food source. The potential range of trophic and behavioural variation seems to be larger than that expressed in nature as a rule. The Mainz Microtron MAMI is shortly described followed by a sketch of the three main experimental facilities: the Al collaboration realizing a 3-spectrometer set-up, the A2 collaboration realizing a photon tagger together with numerous dedicated detectors, and the A3 collaboration realizing a facility to use polarized electrons and polarized targets for the measurement of the electric form factor of the neutron G e,n. Search for Neutrons as Evidence of Cold Fusion

In this paper investigations performed at the University of Palermo in an attempt to reproduce the cold fusion experiment are reported. The search was devoted to detecting neutron emission from palladium electrodes electrolytically charged with deuterium. In no test was neutron emission significantly over the background observed, either in bursts or continuous. Results of a few tests are reported. For the more sensitive test, an upper limit for D(d,n) cold fusion (at 98% confidence level) of {lambda}{sub f} {lt} 3.6 {times} 10{sup {minus}24} fusion/s {center dot} d-d pair is determined.

Effects of ZrO2 precursors on the synthesis of V-ZrSiO4 solid solutions by the sol-gel method

The preparation of V-ZrSiO4 solid solutions starting from different ZrO2 precursors by using sol-gel methods is reported. The starting materials were hydrolysed and the dried gels were fired at a temperature between 500 and 900 °C with soaking times of 12h. The organic character of zirconia precursors was stronger, i.e. the starting material had more carbon atoms, a higher temperature was necessary to make the first crystalline phase appear (ZrO2(tetragonal)) and the temperature range for the whole phase transformation was narrower. In vivo and in vitro effects of nickel and cadmium on the plasmalemma ATPase from rice (Oryza sativa L.) shoots and roots

Abstract Plasmalemma vesicles isolated from rice (Oryza sativa L.) shoots and roots were used to study the effect of different nickel and cadmium concentrations on the Mg2+-ATPase activity. In vivo application of the metals for 5 or 10 days resulted in a stimulation of the enzyme activity in shoots, while either increases or decreases were observed in roots depending on the concentration and the type of ion tested. In contrast, an inhibitory effect was always observed on shoot and root plasmalemma ATPase activity when these ions were applied in vitro. Unions of identifiable classes of total recursive functions

J.Barzdin [Bar74] has proved that there are classes of total recursive functions which are EX-identifiable but their union is not. We prove that there are no 3 classes U1, U2, U3 such that U1∪U2,U1∪U3 and U2∪U3 would be in EX but U1∪U2∪U3∉ EX. For FIN-identification there are 3 classes with the above-mentioned property and there are no 4 classes U1, U2, U3, U4 such that all 4 unions of triples of these classes would be identifiable but the union of all 4 classes would not. For identification with no more than p minchanges a (2p+2−1)-tuple of such classes do exist but there is no (2p+2)-tuple with the above-mentioned properly.

Updated measurement of the average b hadron lifetime

An improved measurement of the average lifetime of b hadrons has been performed with the ALEPH detector. From a sample of 260000 hadronic Z0 decays, recorded during the 1991 LEP run with the silicon vertex detector fully operational, a fit to the impact parameter distribution of lepton tracks coming from semileptonic decays yields an average b hadron lifetime of 1.49 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.06 ps.

The concentrations of serum testosterone, sex-hormone-binding-globulin (SHBG) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were examined throughout 1-year of training in six elite weightlifters. A systems model, providing an estimation of fatigue and fitness, was applied to records of training volume and performance levels in clean and jerk. The analysis focused on a 6-week training period during which blood samples were taken at 2-week intervals. Mean interannual (1981–1985) hydrochemical input-output budgets indicate net gains of sulphur in forested and unforested watersheds (1150–1450m deviation range) of Mont Lozere (2). 0022-2860; Recent progress in high-resolution non-linear coherent Raman spectroscopy in the gas phase is reviewed. An instrumental spectral resolution of less than 100 MHz can be routinely achieved.
