Human asialoglycoprotein receptor as an autoantigen in chronic hepatitis.
1991
ASGPR may play a role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune chronic liver diseases. Several lines of evidence support this hypothesis. Antibodies to rabbit ASGPR could be found in various inflammatory liver diseases. In contrast, ASGPR preparations derived from human liver (h-ASGPR) were recognized predominantly by sera from patients with ai-CAH. Moreover, anti-h-ASGPR showed a close correlation to the inflammatory activity of ai-CAH both in terms of prevalence (88% in histologically proven active diseases), immunoglobulin class (IgM antibodies restricted to active inflammation) and behavior during treatment. Anti-h-ASGPR secretion could also be found in vitro, when PBL of patients were stimula…
Ethopharmacological studies on the effects of antihormones on rodent agonistic behavior with especial emphasis on progesterone.
1991
The effects of a range of antiandrogens and antiestrogens on conflict behaviors in laboratory rats and mice are reassessed in the light of recent studies applying ethophamacological analyses (recording the full spectrum of behaviors) to such investigations. It is argued that any antihostility properties of the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate are largely a consequence of indirect actions on odor communication, whereas antiestrogens (e.g., tamoxifen and CI 680) seem to have more fundamental motivational effects in addition to communicatory actions. A detailed example of the approach is provided in which progesterone (which can be antiandrogenic) is given to rats paired in different ways. The…

(Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ superconductor composites: Ceramics vs. fibers
1991
Abstract Well characterized (Bi, Pb) 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ superconductor powder has been used to prepare superconductor-glass, -metal and -alloy composites through solid state reaction method. A recently developed Laser Floating Zone (LFZ) apparatus has been used to transform the ceramic precursors into oriented fibers. The diamagnetic properties have been studied by a.c. susceptibility. The microstructure of fibers has been studied by SEM and compared with that of the original ceramic precursors. XRD has been used to study phase composition on representative composite samples and fibers. The results indicate some potential for the 2223-Ag composite, which displays improved diamagnetic p…
INTEREST OF BEAM QUALITY IN MATERIALS TREATMENTS BY HIGH POWER LASER
1991
The aim of the study is the increasing of performances of the YAG Lasers. For this, we use the principle established by Boquillon and Taisne : an X geometry of the resonator. In this case the number of emitted modes is lower than for the linear conception and the beam quality is greater. So, reached power density can be 7 times higher than for the classical cavity and consequently cutting speed can be about 2 times higher than for the linear one. Concerning welding, thick materials need a lot of energy and our system is not competitive. however it exists an interest for thin joining with an easely formed key hole and later a more important penetration.
Influence of the differentiation system on the analytical parameters for the spectrophotometric determination of clonazepam in urine
1991
Abstract Electronic and mathematical differentiation of the ultraviolet visible spectra were compared from the study of the analytical parameters of the direct determination of clonazepam in urine samples. Third-order derivative spectra were used. The mathematical differentiation provides higher sensitivity, a lower limit of detection, and better accuracy and precision than the electronic one. The use of a diode array instrument provides lower sensitivity than that found using a conventional spectrometer; however, the limit of detection obtained in both cases is of the same order.
The neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge, 82Se, 86Kr, 114Cd, 128, 130Te and 134, 136Xe in the framework of a relativistic quark confinement model
1991
The half-life of the 0+ → 0+ neutrinoless double beta decay is calculated for 76Ge, 82Se, 86Kr, 114Cd, 128, 130Te and 134, 136Xe and the upper limit for the effective neutrino mass of 3.0 eV is deduced from available experimental data. In addition, the contribution of the right-handed charged weak currents to the effective weak hamiltonian is estimated. The relevant parameters attain the values |〈Λ〉| < 4.1 × 10−6 and |〈ν〉| < 6.6 × 10−8. The nucleonic weak current is treated starting from the current quark level and evaluating the quark current using relativistic quark wave functions obtained from a Dirac equation with a harmonic confinement potential. The nuclear matrix elements of the thus…
A reading of the Spanish Constitution (1978)
1991
The object of this paper is to examine the Spanish Constitution (1978) using the perspective of modern consitutional political economy. This exercise is an interesting one for two reasons: first it provides a kind of test for the usefulness of the c.p.e. approach and the insights the application of that approach yields; second, it provides an opportunity for a wider readership of a document that is of considerable interest in its own right.
Uniform, Sobolev extension and quasiconformal circle domains
1991
This paper contributes to the theory of uniform domains and Sobolev extension domains. We present new features of these domains and exhibit numerous relations among them. We examine two types of Sobolev extension domains, demonstrate their equivalence for bounded domains and generalize known sufficient geometric conditions for them. We observe that in the plane essentially all of these domains possess the trait that there is a quasiconformal self-homeomorphism of the extended plane which maps a given domain conformally onto a circle domain. We establish a geometric condition enjoyed by these plane domains which characterizes them among all quasicircle domains having no large and no small bo…
Description of πp→Δ(1232)π and πp→Δ(1232)ρ(770) reaction proceeding via baryon exchange mechanism
1991
We analyze the available experimental data on the backward production processes πN→Δπ and πN→ Δπ in the framework of the strong-cut Reggeized absorption model, which is based on the exchange of the baryon Regge trajectoriesNα and Δδ with the associated cuts. The model describes rather well the data on the differential cross sections at incident π momenta ranging from 2.15 to 20 GeV/c. An essential contribution of Δδ exchange even at small energies (Elab of the order of a few GeV) is found. A model-independent analysis of data confirms this fenomena.
HIGHLY EXCITED VIBRATIONAL STATES OF CYCLIC MOLECULES INVESTIGATED BY I.C.L.A SPECTROSCOPY WITH PHOTOACOUSTIC DETECTION
1991
The spectra of the fourth and fifth CH stretching overtones of cyclohexene and cyclopentene molecules and of some of their selectively deuterated derivatives have been measured by dye laser intracavity spectroscopy with photoacoustic detection. The intramolecular relaxation of the vibrational energy occurs principally through Fermi resonances with CH2 bending combinations in cyclohexene and through a coupling between the stretching and the ring puckering motions in cyclopentene.
Bioconcentration, metabolism and toxicity of substituted anilines in the zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio).
1991
The LC50 (96 h) values and the bioconcentration factors (BCF) for nine anilines (aniline; 2-, 3-, 4-chloroaniline; 2-, 3-, 4-nitroaniline; 2,4- and 3,4-dichloroaniline) in the zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) were determined. Biotransformation products of anilines in the zebrafish were analyzed by HPLC. The aim of the investigations was to find relationships between accumulation/elimination/metabolism and toxicity on the one hand and between chemical structure and biotransformation on the other. We found a good correlation of log BCF and of log Pow with log LC50. This concurs with the assumption that the internal dose determines the toxicological effect. All anilines investigated, with the exc…
Tenascin gene expression in rat liver and in rat liver cells. In vivo and in vitro studies.
1991
Tenascin is a major glycoprotein constituent of the extracellular matrix with a strong affinity to fibronectin; its distribution is believed to be temporarily and spatially limited. Tenascin gene expression is increased during wound healing processes. As repair mechanisms in chronic liver diseases resemble wound healing we studied tenascin gene expression in rat liver and in isolated rat liver cells. In normal rat liver a tenascin specific antiserum stains sinusoidal cells with fiber-like prolongations, which at the same time are desmin-positive (ITO-cells). In the CCl4-acutely-damaged liver a strong tenascin staining is detected in cells located among the mononuclear cells of the inflammat…

Telechelic α,ω-macrozwitterions — narrowly distributed polystyrene chains oppositely charged at each end — were synthesized via anionic polymerization using direct functionalization with the initiator and the termination agent. The resulting products were purified (zwitterion content ≥ 0,95) and characterized with gel permeation chromatography, viscometry, static and dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering. In unpolar solvents as toluene, the polymeric zwitterions form clusters with molecular weights depending on concentration. In the dilute case, the clusters are relatively small and consist of approximately 8 zwitterions. The structure of these clusters is discussed by…
Inhibition of gluconeogenesis by extracellular ATP in isolated rat hepatocytes.
1991
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of externally added ATP on gluconeogenesis by isolated hepatocytes from starved rats. High concentrations of extracellular ATP inhibited gluconeogenesis from lactate and pyruvate but not from glycerol or fructose. This inhibition was associated with an increase in intracellular adenosine contents. ADP, AMP, or adenosine but not guanosine 5'triphosphate, inosine 5' triphosphate, or adenine also inhibited gluconeogenesis. alpha, beta-Methylene-ATP, a nonmetabolizable structural analogue of ATP, did not affect the rate of gluconeogenesis. Intracellular ATP levels were increased by externally added ATP or adenosine, but ATP-to-ADP ratios in the…

Distribution of Ha-ras alleles in patients with colorectal cancer and Crohn's disease.
1991
The allele distribution of the Ha-ras gene on chromosome 11p was analysed by the restriction fragment length polymorphism of the enzymes Mspl/Hpall in 238 individuals. The investigation covered 116 patients with colorectal carcinoma and 122 patients with Crohn's disease, representing two patient populations with the same ethnic origin, one with a malignant and the other a benign disease of the same organ system. A total of 17 different alleles were detected belonging to the common, intermediate, and rare classes according to the original nomenclature of Ha-ras alleles. Patients with Crohn's disease showed no difference in the distribution of Ha-ras alleles when compared with expected freque…
Avoidance behaviour: A predictor of the efficacy of pharmacotherapy in panic disorder?
1991
The impact of the avoidance behaviour on the psychopharmacological treatment of panic disorder was explored in the Cross National Collaborative Panic Study (n = 1134 patients); in this double blind randomized trial alprazolam, imipramine and placebo were compared during an 8-week treatment period. Patients with extensive avoidance behaviour (agoraphobia) had the most profit from the active drugs. Counter expectancy these specific drug effects were most pronounced in avoidance behaviour. Active drugs (in particular imipramine) were especially more effective than placebo if the patients presented with associated avoidance behaviour. The results suggest that agoraphobia defines more a particul…
Changes in pigmentation of phytoplankton species during growth and stationary phase — consequences for reliability of pigment-based methods of biomas…
1991
In applied water ecology several methods for estimating the biomass or activity of phytoplankton depend on the proportion of accessory pigments (xanthophylls) to chlorophyll a. Therefore, changes in pigmentation during growth and stationary phase were investigated in four different species (Amphidinium klebsii, Euglena gracilis, Prymnesium parvum, Cryptomonas ovata) typical representatives of the major algal groups. The ratios of the different xanthophylls to chlorophyll a depended not only on the growth phase, but also on the species. InAmphidinium andEuglena, the ratio of xanthophylls to chlorophyll rises continuously during the growth phase and declined during the stationary phase. InPry…
Intermediate filament protein profiles of human testicular non-seminomatous germ cell tumors: correlation of cytokeratin synthesis to cell differenti…
1991
Abstract The patterns of cytoskeletal differentiation were studied in 20 testicular non-seminomatous germ cell tumors by immunohistochemistry, using diverse monoclonal antibodies specific for different intermediate filament (IF) proteins and for desmoplakin. Immuno-fluorescence and immunoperoxidase methods on both formalin-fixed and frozen tissues were applied, in some cases together with a gel electrophoretic analysis of IF proteins. The tumors examined included embryonal carcinoma (EC), endodermal sinus tumor (EST), choriocar-cinoma and teratoma. Nine of the tumors were composed of only one histological type, the others showed mixed components. Cytokeratins 8 and 18 were identified in all…
Micropropagation of juvenile and adult Sorbus domestica L.
1991
Successful propagation of seedlings and mature trees of Sorbus domestica L. has been achieved by in vitro methods. Multiple shoot formation was obtained by placing shoot apices or nodal segments on a modified Schenck and Hildebrandt medium containing benzyladenine. Regenerated shoots were excised and induced to root on media with auxin. In the best treatments 75–85% of shoots from juvenile material rooted. Rooting capacity of shoots from mature explants was lower (30%) and was not improved by dipping the base of shoots in concentration solutions of indolebutyric or naphthaleneacetic acids. Plantlets were ultimately established in soil.
Alpha-toxin of Staphylococcus aureus
1991
Alpha-toxin, the major cytotoxic agent elaborated by Staphylococcus aureus, was the first bacterial exotoxin to be identified as a pore former. The protein is secreted as a single-chain, water-soluble molecule of Mr 33,000. At low concentrations (less than 100 nM), the toxin binds to as yet unidentified, high-affinity acceptor sites that have been detected on a variety of cells including rabbit erythrocytes, human platelets, monocytes and endothelial cells. At high concentrations, the toxin additionally binds via nonspecific absorption to lipid bilayers; it can thus damage both cells lacking significant numbers of the acceptor and protein-free artificial lipid bilayers. Membrane damage occu…
Stimulation of human T cells by microbial 'superantigens'.
1991
The enterotoxins and the TSST of S. aureus, the erythrogenic toxins A and C of S. pyogenes and a still uncharacterized exoprotein of M. arthritidis belong to a family of exotoxins that have in common a potent mitogenic activity for T lymphocytes of several species. These proteins stimulate CD4+ and C8+ T cells, as well as a fraction of gamma delta TCR-bearing T cells by cross-linking variable parts of the T cell antigen receptor with MHC class II molecules on accessory or target cells. They are functionally bivalent molecules having distinct interaction sites for variable parts of the TCR and for nonpolymorphic parts of the MHC class II molecule. For alpha beta TCR-bearing T cells the V bet…
Neutron-rich isotopes around the r-process ?waiting-point? nuclei 29 79 Cu50 and 30 80 Zn50
1991
Beta-decay half-lives (T1/2) and delayed-neutron emission probabilities (Pn) of very neutron-rich Cu to As nuclei have been measured, among them the new isotopes77Cu48,79Cu50,81Zn51 and84Ga53. With the T1/2 and Pn-values of now four N ∼-50 ”waiting-point” nuclei known, our hypothesis that the r-process has attained a local β-flow equilibrium araound A∼-80 is further strengthened.

Tachykinin-, calcitonin gene-related peptide-, and protein gene product 9.5-immunoreactive nerve fibers in alveolar walls of mammals.
1991
The presence and distribution of the presumed pan-neural marker protein gene product 9.5 (PGP)- and peptide-immunoreactive (ir) nerve fibers in alveolar walls of various species was investigated by light microscopic single and double staining immunohistochemistry. PGP-, tachykinin (TK)-, and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CRGP)-ir fibers were sparsely distributed in a similar pattern in alveolar walls of all species investigated. No vasoactive intestinal peptide-, peptide histidine isoleucine-, galanin-, and opioid-ir nerve fibers could be detected. PGP-ir fibers outnumbered those staining for TKs and CGRP. There was partial coexistence of PGP and TK as well as of TK and CRGP. PGP-, TK-, …

Platelet-activating factor type activity in plasma from patients with septicemia and other diseases
1991
The purpose of the present study was to determine whether increased levels of platelet-activating factor (PAF) type activity can be detected in plasma from patients with septicemia and other diseases. A level of PAF below 0.5 ng/mL of plasma was considered normal. We found that plasma from a patient with adverse anaphylactoidic reaction to intravenous analgetics contained 2.1 ng PAF/mL. In seven patients with septicemia, including urosepsis, endocarditis and peritonitis, and with positive blood culture, increased plasma PAF levels (1-20 ng PAF/mL) were observed. Other patients with clinical indications of septicemia had negative blood cultures and/or increased levels of C-reactive protein (…
High spin states of120Ba
1991
The very neutron deficient nucleus120Ba has been investigated in a high-spin γ-spectroscopic study. The yrast band of120Ba is extended up to spin 22ħ and one tentatively assigned negative-parity side band is observed up to spin 15ħ. The experimental results are compared with Total Routhian Surface calculations.
Nonradical oxidants of the phagocyte type induce the activation of plasmatic single chain- urokinase
1991
Single chain- urokinase (scu-PA) is the proenzyme of the plasminogen activator urokinase (tcu-PA). In human blood scu-PA is of great stability. Activated phagocytes generate large amounts of single chain- urokinase and of reactive oxidants (chloramines and HOCl). Since these cells participate in physiologic fibrinolysis, we were interested in the interaction between plasmatic scu-PA and chloramines. The oxidants dose dependently induce the activation of plasmatic scu-PA. Optimal activation of scu-PA occurs at about 3-5 mmol/l of chloramine-T. The findings suggest a control mechanism of scu-PA stability/activity by oxidatively modifiable plasma proteins, such as alpha-2-antiplasmin. The oxid…
The value of high resolution CT in the diagnosis of meniscal lesions of the knee
1991
We report on 50 patients who had meniscal pathology and were given computed tomographic (CT) scans. Our diagnostic accuracy was approximately 92%. We believe that CT is a good method of screening these patients prior to using a much more expensive method, such as magnetic resonance imaging or diagnostic arthroscopy.
Linear infrared dichroism by a double modulation technique
1991
In the first part of this paper an experimental setup using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in combination with a photoelastic modulator (PEM) for linear dichroism measurements is described. The second part shows the influence of PEM-amplitude and scan-velocity on the sensitivity of the instrument. The third part deals with the fringe-problem in the baselines of absorbance spectra and its influence on the determination of the linear dichroic ratio.
