Fisiopatología de los Cuerpos Libres Intraarticulares : estudio Experimental

1991

Sulphides of the platinum group elements—12. Bis(tetraphenylphosphonium) pentakaidekakissulphido platinates(IV)

1991

Abstract Synthetic routes to tetraphenylphosphonium salts of [PtSx]2− are outlined, where x = 15 or 18. Generally, (PPh4)2[Pt(S5)3] is formed most readily. The compound [(C6H5)4P]2[PtS15], always solvated, has been obtained by synthesis in acetonitrile (sulphur, triethylamine, H2S and [PPh4]2[PtCl6]) and by metathesis (in DMF) from the known hydrated ammonium compound (NH4)2[Pt(S5)3]2H2O+2[Ph4P]Br→(Ph4P)2[Pt(S5)3]· DMF+2NH4Br, and from the dismutation (in acetone) 3PtS172−→PtS152−+2PtS182−. X-ray diffraction shows that crystals obtained from DMF and acetone are the solvated salts [Ph4P]2· [Pt(S5)3]· S, with solvent molecules (S) uncoordinated. In both, the three platinopentathian rings rela…

Monte Carlo Simulations of Growth Kinetics and Phase Transitions at Interfaces: Some Recent Results

1991

ABSTRACTIn the first part Monte Carlo studies of the kinetics of multilayer adsorption (without screening) are described. The approach to the jamming coverage in each layer is asymptotically exponential. The jamming coverages approach the infinite-layer limit value according to a power law. In the second part, studies of phase transitions in two dimensional fluids are reviewed. With a combination of Monte Carlo and finite size scaling block analysis techniques, accurate values are obtained for the critical temperatures, coexistence densities and the compressibilities of an adsorbed fluid layer in an NVT ensemble.

Adapting available finite element structural programs to solve three-dimensional high frequency electromagnetic problems

1991

The adaptation of available structural mechanics software to solve microwave problems is possible by the analogy between the differential equations. A brief review of the analogy between transverse or shear waves in elasticity and electromagnetic waves is presented, followed by a more detailed discussion of the adaptation of a program to obtain the resonant frequencies of a rectangular resonant cavity, doing a three-dimensional analysis. The geometry of the electric field is also obtained for the resonant modes.

The EDTA Family of Molecular Based Ferromagnets

1991

The bimetallic compounds of the EDTA family offer a large variety of ferrimagnetic model systems in which the dimensionality as well as the exchange-anisotropy can be controlled with ease. This paper deals with the magneto-structural chemistry of this kind of materials, paying particular attention to both the low-dimensional magnetic behavior and the three-dimcnsional magnetic ordering.

Differential staining of mucin granules from epoxy resin sections by a phosphotungstic acid-methyl green procedure.

1991

After treatment of epoxy resin semithin sections from glutaraldehyde fixed rat large intestine with 5% aqueous phosphotungstic acid (PTA), staining with unpurified 0.2% solutions of methyl green at 60 C for 5 min produces a color differentiation between mucin granules of goblet cells. Some mucin granules and the glycocalyx appear deep green while the remaining granules, luminal mucin and collagen fibers are pink. The known contamination of unpurified methyl green with crystal violet seems to be responsible for the pink staining reaction of the latter structures, which also present an orange-red fluorescence under green exciting light. Electron microscopic observations show selective contras…

Unpolarized and polarized beam sources

1991

The cross sections of photon-induced nuclear processes were usually studied with the aid of a bremsstrahlung beam produced by fast electrons hitting a suitable radiator. Such bremsstrahlung radiation contains photons of all energies from zero up to the kinetic energy of the incoming electrons and so the desired cross section had to be deduced from the integral yield by taking the bremsstrahlung spectrum of the photon beam from the theory. In this section we shall show that this method can produce significant systematic errors in the absolute value of the cross sections due to the lack of a precise knowledge of the bremsstrahlung spectrum.

Combined dynamic response of primary and multiply connected cascaded secondary subsystems

1991

A method is proposed for the deterministic and stochastic non-stationary analysis of linear composite systems with cascaded secondary subsystems subjected to a seismic input. This method makes it possible to evaluate, by means of a unitary formulation, the deterministic and non-stationary stochastic response of both classically and non-classically damped subsystems and of secondary subsystems multiply supported on the primary one, as well as the ground. The proposed procedure is very efficient from a computational point of view, because of the Kronecker algebra systematically employed. Indeed, by using this algebra, it is possible to obtain in a very compact and elegant form the eigenproper…

Quiste óseo aneurismático poliostótico

1991

A bifocal aneurysmatic bone cyst presenting in a 12-year-old is reported. The first lesion detected was situated in the p…

A computer-based diagnostic tutor for average velocity

1991

Abstract The concept of average velocity is often misunderstood, even by students at university level. To analyse student reasoning about average velocity, students who were being instructed in kinematics in an introductory physics course were shown a series of computer animations of two cars moving independently. Their answers to subsequent questions tended to use partial knowledge elements present in the problem. On this basis, a list of eight procedures used by students was drawn up and used as the basis of a computer-based diagnostic tutor, Velo. The performance of Velo is being compared with human tutors.

Regularity of one-letter languages acceptable by 2-way finite probabilistic automata

1991

R. Freivalds proved that the nonregular language {0m1m} can be recognized by 2-way probabilistic finite automata (2pfa) with arbitrarily high probability 1-e (e>0). We prove that such an effect is impossible for one-letter languages: every one-letter language acceptable by 2pfa with an isolated cutpoint is regular.

An Analysis of the Broadening Induced by Beam Damage in Transmission Electron Diffraction Spots from an Oriented Aliphatic Monolayer

1991

We have analysed the progressive changes in diffraction spot shape during prolonged transmission electron diffraction observation of a soap monolayer supported on a thin polymer film. The material used to form the monolayer was cadmium eicosanoate (arachidate). The observed changes cannot be explained at all in terms of the chemical crosslinking which is known to occur as a result of beam damage, nor completely in terms of the strain fields caused by unbound dislocation defects of the crystalline lattice. The most plausible explanation involves the formation of linear dislocation aggregates which resemble grain boundaries but yet which are not linked into a continuous network. The evolution…

Simplified thermal analysis of naturally ventilated dwellings

1991

Abstract A simplified comprehensive methodology for thermal comfort prediction in a naturally crossventilated room is described. The methodology mainly consists of the following three steps: • - analysis of the dynamic thermal behaviour of the given room, by means of the admittance procedure; • - evaluation of the air flows rates and their velocities in the room, by means of a new simplified method; • - thermal comfort prediction by means of the Fanger's theory. The results obtained appear satisfactory and the simplified methodology makes itself a useful tool for the identification of appropriate choices at the early stages of the design process, regarding naturally ventilated buildings. Acute toxicity and bioaccumulation of endosulfan in rotifer (Brachionus calyciflorus).

1991

Abstract 1. 1. The acute toxicity of endosulfan was determined for the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus . 2. 2. The mean 24 hr lc 50 value for endosulfan was 5.15 ppm with a coefficient of variation of 14.7%. 3. 3. Rotifers were exposed at two sublethal concentrations (1.5–2.0 ppm) of endosulfan for bioaccumulation experiments, for an exposure time of 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr. The rotifers were fed with Nannochloris oculata (5 × 10 5 cell/ml). 4. 4. The highest accumulation of endosulfan was found 24 hr after the start of the exposure to 1.5 ppm of the toxicant. A steady-state concentration in rotifer was reached between 24–48 hr, followed by a gradual decrease until 96 hr.

Subretinal neovascularization in anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

1991

A 66-year-old man with typical anterior ischemic optic neuropathy in one eye suffered from edema of the optic disc without functional changes in the fellow eye. However, 7 months later, a reduction in visual acuity, a change in the visual field and a worsening of the contrast-sensitivity curve demonstrated the development of typical anterior ischemic optic neuropathy in this eye as well. After another 6-month period, in addition to these changes, an extensive subretinal neovascular membrane developed in the papillomacular area, which further reduced the patient's visual acuity and required treatment with laser photocoagulation. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of the occurren…

Child Abuse, Neglect, and Violent Criminal Behavior in a Midwest Metropolitan Area of the United States, 1967-1988

1991

These data examine the relationships between childhood abuse and/or neglect and later criminal and violent criminal behavior. In particular, the data focus on whether being a victim of violence and/or neglect in early childhood leads to being a criminal offender in adolescence or early adulthood and whether a relationship exists between childhood abuse or neglect and arrests as a juvenile, arrests as an adult, and arrests for violent offenses. For this data collection, adult and juvenile criminal histories of sampled cases with backgrounds of abuse or neglect were compared to those of a matched control group with no official record of abuse or neglect. Variables contained in Part 1 include …
