Soft tissue Ewing's sarcoma. Characterization in established cultures and xenografts with evidence of a neuroectodermic phenotype.
1990
This study characterizes the histogenesis of soft tissue Ewing’s sarcoma (StEs) based upon an analysis of three tumors. Long-term cultured cell lines and nude mice xenografts were established from original neoplasms or from their metastases. Histologically they revealed a small round cell pattern without signs of differentiation. Several ultrastructural features of neural type were found; the same were also seen on culture cell lines. Moreover, immunohistochemical study for neural markers revealed the presence of HNK-1, NSE, LIRC-LON 36, S-100 protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein, neurofilaments (70 kilodaltons), and chromogranin; some of these markers were present only in the transplan…

[Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (Grönblad-Strandberg syndrome) and rheumatoid arthritis].
1990
A 72-year-old woman, not previously known to have coronary heart disease, was admitted to hospital with an acute anterior wall myocardial infarction. The history revealed that, when about 40 years of age, a coarse skin-fold and yellowish-white xanthoma-like efflorescences had been noted around her umbilicus, the inguinal regions and axillae. These changes subsequently developed into a pathognomonic picture of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PE), which was a significant factor in the myocardial infarction. At the age of 69 years, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), stage II after Steinbrocker, had been diagnosed on the basis of morning stiffness, symmetrical arthritis in more than three joint regions and t…

Studies on the interaction of C1q,a subcomponent of the first component of complement, with porins fromSalmonella minnesotaincorporated into artifici…
1990
AbstractPurified outer membrane proteins (OMP) of Salmonella minnesota, Re-form, were incorporated into liposomes. These induced in macrophages a chemiluminescence signal identical to that of the intact Re-form. This signal was abolished by preincubation of porin-containing liposomes with purified C1q. Incorporation of isolated OMP into black lipid membranes (BLM) resulted in channel-formation which could not be inhibited by isolated C1q. Additionally, incubation of OMP-containing liposomes with BLM resulted in pore-formation within the BLM. This was amplified when lipid A was present within the liposomes. Preincubation of OMP-containing liposomes with purified C1q abolished pore-formation …
ChemInform Abstract: Heterocyclic Photorearrangements. Photoinduced Rearrangement of 3-Styryl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles.
1990
The photochemical behaviour of 3-styryl-5-phenyl-(5-methyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazoles in methanol at 254 nm has been investigated. A photoinduced rearrangement to the quinoline system has been pointed out and explained as proceeding through an initial photolysis of the ring ON bond, followed by a six membered ring closure reaction involving the styryl moiety.
Differential in vitro Anti-HIV Activity of Natural Lignans
1990
Abstract Two naturally occurring lignanolides, isolated from the tropical climbing shrub Ipomoea cairica, (-)-arctigen in and (-)-trachelogen in , were found to inhibit strongly replication of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1; strain HTLV-III B) in vitro. At a concentration of 0.5 (μм , (-)-arctigenin and (-)-trachelogenin inhibited the expression of HIV-1 proteins p 17 and p24 by 80 -90 % and 60 -70 % , respectively. The reverse transcriptase activity in the culture fluids was reduced by 80 -90 % when the cells (HTLV-III B/H 9) were cultivated in the presence of 0.5 μм (-)-arctigen in or 1 μм (-)-trachelogenin . At the same concentrations, the formation of syncytia in the HTLV-I…

Influence of brood temperature and hygrometry variations on the development of the honey bee ectoparasite Varroa jacobsoni (Mesostigmata : Varroidae)
1990
The influence of different temperatures (from 26 to 39.5°C) and relative humidities (40 and 70%) on the development of Varma jacobsoni (Oudemans) was studied by placing newly capped and parasitized worker bee broods into thermostatically controlled chambers. In one set of experiments the temperature was kept constant, and in the second set, the parasitized worker broods were placed at a temperature of 40,41, or 42°C for a time varying from 0 to 24 h and then returned to 32.5°C. The optimal temperature for development of the mites was between 32.5 and 33.4°C, which corresponds to the brood temperature of Apis mellifera L. Above 36.5°C, reproduction of varroa females was significantly reduced…
Immunologic Effects of Interferon
1990
Interferons can be defined as a family of induced proteins sharing the capacity to exert pleiotropic effects on cell functions and to render cells resistant to virus infection. They are activating genes coding for a number of enzymes, most of which have not yet been characterized, and also by enhancing the synthesis of cell surface components. This enables interferons to modulate the immune response at different levels. This article will focus on the effects of interferon on antigen presentation, regulation of the immune response, activation of macrophage functions, and on its role in the pathogenesis of some diseases.
AIDS knowledge and homophobia among French and American university students.
1990
22 male American and 24 male French college students' knowledge of AIDS scores were equivalent on a currently constructed 18-item questionnaire. Both groups answered more than 75% of the questions correctly. The American students' homophobic bias and reaction scores were higher than those of the French students on a 43-item homophobic questionnaire. The latter findings were interpreted as consistent with reduced effects of conservative, orthodox religion in France and the stability of traditional religious influence in America over the past three decades. No relation was found between knowledge of AIDS and homophobia in these small conveniently available samples.

Ultra-long-distance running and the liver.
1990
During an ultra-long-distance race (1000 km in 20 days) the influence of running was examined on the enzymes aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (AP), gamma-glutamyl-transferase (GGT), and glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) with regard to their release from the liver cells or their induction. Furthermore the liver synthetic capacity was assayed by measuring the enzyme activity of cholinesterase and the concentration of serum albumin during the race. Of the 110 participants, 55 finished the race and only the results of these runners were used in our study. AP increased continuously from day 0 (mean = 102 U/L) to day 19 (mean = 120 U/L). A fivefo…
TNFα Primes Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes for an Enhanced Respiratory Burst to a Similar Extent As Bacterial Lipopolysaccharide
1990
We examined whether preincubating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) with TNF alpha would result in an enhanced respiratory burst upon subsequent stimulation by various agents. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a known primer of PMN, was used as control. We found that both LPS (0.01 to 10.0 microgram/ml) and recombinant TNF alpha (0.001 to 1.0 microgram/ml) act as direct stimulants of PMN as measured by chemiluminescence. Sixty minutes of preincubation of PMN with 1 microgram/ml TNF alpha or 10 micrograms/ml LPS resulted in similar priming for the respiratory burst elicited by opsonized zymosan, phorbol myristate acetate, zymosan, zymosan-activated serum, aggregated immunoglobulin, and f-…
Laboratory design to simulate complexity of forest floor for studying the role of fauna in the soil processes
1990
We developed a technique for simulating the complexity of the soil system under controlled laboratory conditions. Removable microcosms were inserted in a homogeneous substrate soil in a large plastic box. This macrocosm was sealed, except for an inlet and outlet for air flow, and an aperture for collecting leachates. The system can be designed and manipulated in various ways according to the needs of a particular experiment. Respiration and nutrient fluxes can be measured either from the whole macrocosm or separately from the microcosms. We have performed three experiments in order to evaluate the role of animals in the soil processes. A set of macrocosms was constructed from components of …
Suspension feeding of anuran larvae at low concentrations of Chlorella algae (Amphibia, Anura).
1990
Ingestion and filtering rates in larval Xenopus laevis, Bufo calamita, Rana temporia and Bufo bufo fed suspensions of Chlorella fusca were investigated. Concentrations were measured with a Coulter Counter. (1) For all species, filtration occurred at concentrations far below those reported by other authors for Rana sylvatica feeding on Chlorella pyrenoidosa. For Bufo bufo, only larvae near metamorphosis showed ingestion at low particle concentrations. Since buccopharyngeal ventilation continues even in the absence of food particles, this threshold feeding behaviour in the younger larvae must be due to different mechanisms to those found in Daphnia and Calanus studied by other authors: probab…

Compounds of molybdenum(VI) with aspartic acid: A spectrophotometric and potentiometric study of the formation and interconversion equilibria in aque…
1990
Addition of Na2MoO4 to an excess of aspartic acid (AspH2) can produce any of four different complexes depending on the pH, namely [MoO3(Asp)]2−, [Mo2O5(Asp)2]2−, [Mo2O4(OH)(Asp)2]− and [Mo2O4(Asp)2]. The ranges of formation of these species with pH, the number of equivalents of acid necessary for their formation, and their stoichiometries, condensation degrees and stability constants, have been calculated by potentiometric and spectrophotometric techniques. The aspartic acid acts as a tridentate ligand in all cases.
Expression of the gene of the alpha-smooth muscle-actin isoform in rat liver and in rat fat-storing (ITO) cells.
1990
Fat storing cells (FSCs) in the liver represent the main site of vitamin A deposition in the body. These cells are considered to play an important role during scar formation and fibrogenesis in the liver. The putative descent of FSCs from the fibroblastic or from the myofibroblastic system have not been determined yet by morphological or immunohistochemical studies. To further define the origin of these liver cells, we analysed the pattern of expression of three structural proteins: vimentin, desmin and the α-smooth muscle (SM)-actin isoform in FSCs of the rat liver, in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from the aorta and in rat skin fibroblasts. FSCs were studied by immunohistochemical methods im…
Generalized dirichlet problem in nonlinear potential theory
1990
The operator extending the classical solution of the Dirichlet problem for the quasilinear elliptic equation divA(x,▽u)=0 akin to thep-Laplace equation is shown to be unique providedA obeys a specific order principle. The Keldych lemma is also generalized to this nonlinear setting.
Collisional line broadening and line shifting in N2-CO2 mixture studied by inverse Raman spectroscopy
1990
Abstract Collisional effects in the Raman Q-branch of N 2 perturbed by CO 2 have been studied by high-resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectra recorded in the 0.3–1.0 atm and 295–1000 K pressure and temperature ranges are fitted with a theoretical profile taking into account line broadening, frequency shift and line mixing due to rotational energy transfers. The data at low density are used as basic data for the modeling of rotationally inelastic rates through sets of adjustable parameters. We have used in this study the two main models developed in the last decade and known as modified exponential gap (MEG) and energy corrected sudden (ECS) laws. Experimental spectra rec…
Funktionsangiographie der kniegelenknahen Arterien: Konsequenzen für die Stentimplantation?
1990
Angiographic studies of the arteries adjoining the knee in 25 patients show extensive kinking and stenoses of the popliteal artery and less frequently of the distal femoral artery during flexion of the knee joint. This is due to the loss of elasticity with increasing age forcing the vessel into a tortuous course during shortening of the pathway of the popliteal artery with knee flexion. Independent of the principle of the different stents available they probably will not increase the contractility of the stented vessel in the longitudinal axis. It is to expect that after implantation of stents into the popliteal artery kinking will occur predominantly in the original segments of the vessel …

Über blei-haltige Heterocyclen
1990
Abstract Crystal structures of alternating six-membered rings [Ph2PbS]3-P21/c and [Ph2SnS]3-P21/n have been determined by X-ray methods. Both heterocycles exhibit a C2-symmetric twisted boat conformation with tetrahedral coordination of the metal atoms [dPbS 2.491 A (dSnS 2.401 A, dPbC 2.19 A (dSnC 2.129 A)]. No additional intermolecular contacts have been found. A ring-segment exchange reaction in solution has been observed by NMR. In the resulting equilibrium new cyclic compounds containing both tin and lead atoms with coupling constants 2J(207PbS119Sn) 226 Hz have been detected. FD-mass spectra indicate formation of dimeric molecular units.

A detailed analysis ofD-,D s - andB-meson transition form factors and the determination of |V cb |
1990
We study various transition form factors in semi-leptonic decays ofD-,Ds-,B- andBs-mesons using the pole dominance assumption. The vector current form factor is found to have only a negligible contribution to the decay rates involving pseudoscalar to vector transitions. In view of this fact we evaluate the form factors from present experimental data on the exclusive semi-leptonic decay rateΓ and the ratioΓl/ΓT of the longitudinal and transverse partial decay rates. Some non-leptonic two-body decay rates are also investigated using the factorization ansatz. Consistency with the semi-leptonic decays is found. The transition form factors of theD- andDs-mesons are found to contradict the predic…
