The Chaperone System in Salivary Glands: Hsp90 Prospects for Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Malignant Tumors
2022
Salivary gland tumors represent a serious medical problem and new tools for differential diagnosis and patient monitoring are needed. Here, we present data and discuss the potential of molecular chaperones as biomarkers and therapeutic targets, focusing on Hsp10 and Hsp90. The salivary glands are key physiological elements but, unfortunately, the information and the means available for the management of their pathologies, including cancer, are scarce. Progress in the study of carcinogenesis has occurred on various fronts lately, one of which has been the identification of the chaperone system (CS) as a physiological system with presence in all cells and tissues (including the salivary gland…
The barriers dentists face to communicate cancer diagnosis:self-assessment based on SPIKES protocol

The SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies, Their Diagnostic Utility, and Their Potential for Vaccine Development.
2022
Antibodies (Abs) are important immune mediators and powerful diagnostic markers in a wide range of infectious diseases. Understanding the humoral immunity or the development of effective antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 is a prerequisite for limiting disease burden in the community and aids in the development of new diagnostic, therapeutic, and vaccination options. Accordingly, the role of antiviral antibodies in the resistance to and diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection was explored. Antibody testing showed the potential in adding important diagnostic value to the routine diagnosis and clinical management of COVID-19. They could also play a critical role in COVID-19 surveillance, allowing for a …
Reassigning the shapes of the 0+ states in the 186Pb nucleus
2022
Across the physics disciplines, the 186Pb nucleus is the only known system, where the two first excited states, together with the ground state, form a triplet of zero-spin states assigned with prolate, oblate and spherical shapes. Here we report on a precision measurement where the properties of collective transitions in 186Pb were determined in a simultaneous in-beam γ-ray and electron spectroscopy experiment employing the recoil-decay tagging technique. The feeding of the 0+2 state and the interband 2+2→2+1 transition have been observed. We also present direct measurement of the energies of the electric monopole transitions from the excited 0+ states to the 0+ ground state. In contrast to…

Stress Levels in Handball Coaching-Case Study: Preliminary Analysis of the Differences between Training and Match.
2022
Stress plays a significant role in competitions and in the training of sports participants, and coaches are no exception. To better cope with stressful situations, close monitoring of coaches’ stress levels before, during, and after training and competitions is recommended. According to studies, the use of cortisol (C) and alpha-amylase (AA) as biomarkers for monitoring acute stress is recommended. Therefore, the aim of our study was to compare HR, salivary C and AA, and STAI scores before, during, and after handball matches and training sessions. The study examined one professional handball coach, aged 37, in stress markers (salivary cortisol (C) and alpha-amylase (AA) concentrations…
Fully nonperturbative charm-quark tuning using machine learning
2022
We present a relativistic heavy-quark action tuning for the charm sector on ensembles generated by the CLS consortium. We tune a particular 5-parameter action in an entirely non-perturbative and -- up to the chosen experimental input -- model-independent way using machine learning and the continuum experimental charmonium ground-state masses with various quantum numbers. In the end we are reasonably successful; obtaining a set of simulation parameters that we then verify produces the expected spectrum. In the future, we will use this action for finite-volume calculations of hadron-hadron scattering.

Exploring the effectiveness of the Digital Green Certificate Law as Public Health instrument to increase anti-COVID-19 vaccination in a sample of wor…
2022
Counteracting vaccine hesitancy should be considered an absolute priority for Public Health Authorities. A correct health communication represents one of the best ways to increase adhesion to vaccination among hesitant population. In order to increase vaccination coverage rates against COVID-19, the Italian government has issued a legislative decree with a mandatory “Digital Green Certificate” (DGC) to access workplaces for some categories considered at risk. Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional study with the aim to highlight the factors associated with the anti-COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and to estimate the influence of the introduction by law of the Digital Green Certificate (DGC) on…
Is a Catalyst Always Needed? The Case of the Knoevenagel Reaction with Malononitrile
2022
The aim of this Perspective is to start a discussion about the real usefulness of more or less sophisticated catalytic systems for the Knoevenagel reaction with malononitrile, a reaction that can take place under mild conditions without the need of a catalyst. From a sustainable viewpoint the questions are: Is it useful to increase the rate of a reaction that already occurs under mild conditions? Is it useful to spend resources and time in designing, characterizing and realizing complex catalytic systems for such reaction? Does it make sense to carry out the reaction under conditions such as to have a slower reaction rate and therefore to find a catalyst that is able to increase it?

A Mathematical Model for Equitable In-country COVID-19 Vaccine Allocation
2022
Given the scarcity of COVID-19 vaccines, equitable (fair) allocation of limited vaccines across the main administrative units of a country (e.g. municipalities) has been an important concern for public health authorities worldwide. In this study, we address the equitable allocation of the COVID-19 vaccines inside countries by developing a novel, evidence-based mathematical model that accounts for multiple priority groups (e.g. elderly, healthcare workers), multiple vaccine types, and regional characteristics (e.g. storage capacities, infection risk levels). Our research contributes to the literature by developing and validating a model that proposes equitable vaccine allocation alternatives…
The Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor ITF2357 (Givinostat) Targets Oncogenic BRAF in Melanoma Cells and Promotes a Switch from Pro-Survival Autophagy to …
2022
Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACI) are epigenetic compounds that have been widely considered very promising antitumor agents. Here, we focus on the effects of the pan-HDAC inhibitor ITF2357 (Givinostat) in comparison with SAHA (Vorinostat) in melanoma cells bearing BRAF V600E oncogenic mutation. Our results indicate both ITF2357 and SAHA dose-dependently reduce the viability of BRAF-mutated SK-MEL-28 and A375 melanoma cells. The comparison of IC50 values revealed that ITF2357 was much more effective than SAHA. Interestingly, both inhibitors markedly decreased oncogenic BRAF protein expression levels, ITF2357 being the most effective compound. Moreover, the BRAF decrease induced by ITF23…

Grade 8 students appropriating Sankey diagrams: The first cycle in an educational design research
2022
Many students do not experience usefulness in mathematics. To address this problem, we offered them a mathematical tool, Sankey diagrams, which is a flow chart appearing in news media to visualize social, industrial or environmental processes. We carried out an Educational Design Research (EDR) to develop and evaluate lesson materials about contextualized Sankey diagrams. We tested these materials with a class of grade 8 students and evaluated these on the feasibility of students’ appropriation of the diagrams. In the lesson, we observed how students were able to read the Sankey diagrams, liked the societal processes visualized, yet did not fully grasp their mathematical properties. However…
Maritime Crossroads : The Knowledge Pursuits of María de Betancourt (Tenerife, 1758-1824) and Joana de Vigo (Menorca, 1779-1855)
2022
This article explores the biographies of two gentlewomen, María de Betancourt (1758–1824) and Joana de Vigo (1779–1855), who lived respectively in Tenerife and Menorca, two crucial nodes in the scientific, commercial and military global networks of the late eighteenth century. Some of their scientific and literary contributions are mapped, paying particular attention to how they became active in contemporaneous learned networks. It is argued that the peculiar, intellectually rich microcosms of the islands shaped these women's lives in ways that enabled them to enter learned circles, either real or imaginary, and from a very modest site to contribute to the global circulation of ideas, goods…
Decellularized allografts as an alternative for reconstruction of large inferior alveolar nerve defects:a systematic review
2022
Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injuries are a clinical problem with devastating consequences, causing temporary or permanent paresthesia, significantly affecting the patient's quality of life. Despite morbidity, side effects and controversy regarding its results, autologous nerve grafting is still the main treatment for these type of lesions. However, due to advances in knowledge about nerve damage and with the aim of preventing the described problems of autografts, new treatment alternatives based on decellularized allografts have emerged. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the reported efficacy of decellularized allografts for the treatment of IAN damage. We performed a syst…

AbstractThis study analyzes the effect of text-inserted questions and post-text-reading questions, i.e., questions timing, on students’ processing and learning when studying challenging texts. Seventy-six freshmen read two science texts and answered ten adjunct questions with the text available, being tested on learning 5 days afterwards. Questions were presented either after reading the whole text or inserted in the text after reading the relevant information. Online processing data were recorded while reading and searching the texts, and measures of processing strategies (i.e., paraphrases, elaborations) while answering the questions were collected. Compared to students in the post-readin…
Assessment of the Mass and Surface Area of the Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) Needles
2022
The assessment of the surface area of all leaves from a tree crown is regarded as one of the key parameters in scaling ecophysiological processes, such as growth, carbon budget, and water management. The purpose of this study was to investigate the variation of the mass and surface area of Scots pine needles, obtained from trees growing in the same habitat conditions but at different stock densities, therefore occupying different biosocial positions. The mass of needles and the leaf area index (LAI) were determined for an even-aged 33-year-old Scots pine stand located at a fresh mixed coniferous forest site in southwest Poland (50°32′ N; 17°42′ E). The needles, collected…
Immunohistochemical Expression of Vitamin D Receptor in Uterine Fibroids
2022
One of the many factors involved in the development of uterine fibroids is vitamin D deficiency. One aspect of this deficiency is decreased serum concentration of calcidiol-25(OH)D, a metabolite of D3 vitamin. The active form of vitamin D3, which arises after numerous enzymatic reactions, is calcitriol-1,25(OH)2D3; this compound is transported to various body tissues. Vitamin D possesses extra-genomic effects due to its influence on various signaling pathways, i.e., through activating tyrosine kinases and by genomic effects via binding to a specific nuclear receptor, vitamin D receptor (VDR). The vitamin D/VDR complex regulates the expression of genes and is involved in the pathogenesis of …

Eckhaus instability of stationary patterns in hyperbolic reaction–diffusion models on large finite domains
2022
AbstractWe have theoretically investigated the phenomenon of Eckhaus instability of stationary patterns arising in hyperbolic reaction–diffusion models on large finite domains, in both supercritical and subcritical regime. Adopting multiple-scale weakly-nonlinear analysis, we have deduced the cubic and cubic–quintic real Ginzburg–Landau equations ruling the evolution of pattern amplitude close to criticality. Starting from these envelope equations, we have provided the explicit expressions of the most relevant dynamical features characterizing primary and secondary quantized branches of any order: stationary amplitude, existence and stability thresholds and linear growth rate. Particular em…

Tetrazine Linkers as Plug-and-Play Tags for General Framework Functionalization and C60 Conjugation
2022
The value of covalent post-synthetic modification in expanding the chemistry and pore versatility of reticular solids is well documented. Here we use mesoporous crystals of UiO-68-TZDC to demonstrate the value of tetrazine connectors for all-purpose inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder ligation chemistry. Our results suggest a positive effect of tetrazine reticulation over its reactivity for quantitative one-step functionalization with a broad scope of alkene or alkyne dienophiles into pyridazine and dihydropyridazine frameworks. This permits generating multiple pore environments with diverse chemical functionalities and the expected accessible porosities, that is also extended to the synthe…
