Le grafie e le visioni in Oltremare di Umberto Di Segni
2022
Between the end of 1993 and the beginning of 1994, the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna held an extraordinary exhibition on Italian architecture in the overseas territories, accompanied by a catalogue which, through period drawings and photos, gave an insight into a very interesting moment in the history of Italian architecture. The “Quarta Sponda”, at that time thought of as the nineteenth region of the Homeland, was to be a true extension of Italy that would be inhabited, according to a well-defined colonisation programme, by one hundred thousand colonists. The role of architecture was central to the process of founding new agglomerations and representative buildings envisaged by the Fas…
Procedure for Safety Assessment and BIM Modelling of an Historical Complex Structure through a Macroelement Approach: The Building “Molino-Pastificio…
2022
The structural assessment of existing historical structures is a complex task due to the inner main difficulty in making up reliable models for structural analysis, able to include mechanical and geometrical nonlinearities, existing damage, complex configurations and arrangements of materials. This task becomes more difficult in mixed RC-masonry structures, which structural modelling can be particularly tough due to the different connections and interactions between structural members and materials. This paper presents the case study of a multi-storey mixed Reinforced Concrete (RC)- masonry historical structure, namely the former mill “Molino-Pastificio Soresi” building, located in Partinic…
STRUMENTI E METODI PER INTEGRARE GLI ASPETTI AMBIENTALI NELLA MANUTENZIONE DEL PATRIMONIO ARCHITETTONICO
2022
2022
The substantive and procedural instrument of protection orders, consisting of articles 342-bis and ter of the Italian Civil Code as well as of article 736 of the Italian Code of Civil Procedure, not only constitutes a clear example of grafting the remedial perspective within family relationships, but it is also representative of the reorientation of family relationships in the sign of the primacy of the Person. This is the central thesis of the essay, that the Author argues by pointing out how the dynamics of the remedy in question, even in compliance with the principle of balancing the opposing interests, reveals an unconditional primacy of the individual dimension over any counterweights …
Architectural Ultrasound Pennation Angle Measurement of Lumbar Multifidus Muscles: A Reliability Study
2022
The pennation angle has been shown to be a relevant parameter of muscle architecture. This parameter has not previously been measured in the lumbar multifidus musculature, and it is for this reason that it has been considered of great interest to establish an assessment protocol to generate new lines of research in the future. Objective: The objective of this study was to establish a protocol for measuring the pennation angle of the multifidus muscles, with a study of intra-rater and interrater reliability values. Design: This was a reliability study following the recommendations of the Guidelines for Reporting Reliability and Agreement Studies (GRRAS). Setting: The study was carried out at…
[Fri-P2-105] Deciphering the ligand binding properties of the mouse odorant-binding protein OBP5 from Mus musculus
2022
International audience; Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) are abundant soluble proteins secreted in the nasal mucus of a variety of species which are believed to be involved in the transport of odorants towards olfactory receptors. In this study, we report the functional characterization of mouse OBP5 (mOBP5). mOBP5 was recombinantly expressed as a hexahistidine-tagged protein in bacteria and purified by metal affinity. Oligomeric state and secondary structure composition of mOBP5 was investigated using gel filtration and circular dichroism spectroscopy. Fluorescent experiments revealed that mOBP5 interacts with the fluorescent probe N-phenyl naphthylamine (NPN) with a micromolar affinity. Co…
How Can We Improve Vaccination Response in Old People? Part I: Targeting Immunosenescence of Innate Immunity Cells
2022
Vaccination, being able to prevent millions of cases of infectious diseases around the world every year, is the most effective medical intervention ever introduced. However, immunosenescence makes vaccines less effective in providing protection to older people. Although most studies explain that this is mainly due to the immunosenescence of T and B cells, the immunosenescence of innate immunity can also be a significant contributing factor. Alterations in function, number, subset, and distribution of blood neutrophils, monocytes, and natural killer and dendritic cells are detected in aging, thus potentially reducing the efficacy of vaccines in older individuals. In this paper, we focus on t…
Carbon nanotubes thin filters for x-ray detectors in space
2022
In this paper, we present the first results from an investigation performed on nanometric thin pellicles based on carbon nanotubes (CNT) of potential interest for manufacturing large area optical blocking filters to protect soft X-ray detectors in astrophysics space missions. In order to evaluate the effective capability of such materials to block UV/VIS/IR radiation, while being highly transparent in the soft X-rays and strong enough to withstand the severe launch stresses, we have performed a suite of characterization measurements. These include: UV/VIS/IR and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy on bare and Al coated small self-…
Case report: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection in a man with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome
2022
BackgroundSpontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), as a medical emergency, represents one of the non-atherosclerotic causes of an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). It often occurs in young and middle-aged females and is a rarity among male patients. Yet, it is easily misdiagnosed or missed even though it has one of the highest in-hospital mortality rates.Case summaryHere, we present a young male patient admitted to the emergency department of our hospital due to a complaint of acute chest pain. During his hospitalization, we utilized several tools, including imaging modalities, genetic analyses, and clinical strategies, to ensure a proper diagnosis and management of the patient. The resu…
Experimental Characterization and Acoustic Correction of a Multipurpose Performance Hall: The Italian Theatre “Cavallino Bianco”
2022
This study presents the retrofit acoustic dq1esign of the Italian theatre “Cavallino Bianco”. In its historical configuration, the hall had a curved roof with a pressed-plant fiber ceiling, which was demolished and replaced with a wooden roof without a false ceiling, leading to an increase in volume and a worsening of the reverberation time. This study proposed the realization of a wave ceiling and the application of sound-absorbing and reflecting panels on the walls, which have already been implemented. These modifications have affected the acoustic characterization of the theatre, as shown both through on-site measurements during the main construction phases and through numerical simulati…

Work Ability after Breast Cancer: Study of Healthcare Personnel Operating in a Hospital of South Italy
2022
Breast cancer (BrC) treatment can produce disabilities that often impact the quality of daily life and impact the social and working relationships of the patient. This paper looked into the remaining work ability in a group of female healthcare personnel (HCPs) with BrC in Southern Italy. Each HCP was subjected to a medical check, routine blood tests, and a questionnaire on the work ability index (WAI). Of 980 (100%) HCWs undergoing health control, 6% (n = 54) had experienced BRC, and only 66.6% (n = 36) agreed to take part in the study. A total of 28 (78%) were on night shifts. The WAI score was quite low in 5 (13.8%) cases, moderate in 10 (27.7%) cases, good in 14 (38.8%) cases, and excel…
Poly-Gly Region Regulates the Accessibility of Metal Binding Sites in Snake Venom Peptides
2022
It is supposed that the presence of poly-His regions in close proximity to poly-Gly domains in snake venoms is related to their biological activity; poly-His/poly-Gly (pHpG) peptides inhibit the activity of metalloproteinases during venom storage via the chelation metal ions, necessary for their proper functioning. This work shows that only the histidyl residues from the N-terminal VDHDHDH motif (but not from the poly-His tag) were the primary Zn(II) binding sites and that the poly-Gly domain situated in the proximity of a central proline residue may play a regulatory role in venom gland protection. The proline induces a kink of the peptide, resulting in steric hindrance, which may modulate…

Teaching Dilemmas and Student Motivation in Project-based Learning in Secondary Education
2022
This article aims to describe and analyze the dilemmas facing teachers when fostering student motivation in project-based learning (PjBL). The authors developed a project in secondary education through an action research approach. The different action research cycles aimed to solve dilemmas throughout the project and interpret them in terms of student motivation through the self-determination theory. According to this theory, autonomy, relatedness and competence are three psychological needs that, if fulfilled in the classroom, will lead to greater intrinsic motivation. The results revealed that one of the main characteristics of PjBL, namely, presenting the final product to an external aud…
Sewage sludge acidogenic fermentation for organic resource recovery towards carbon neutrality: an experimental survey testing the headspace influence
2022
Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced by acidogenic digestion of sewage sludge are very interesting bio-products which can contribute to carbon neutrality of wastewater treatment plants. Studies on the production of VFAs from sewage sludge from fermenters with membrane are limited. In view of above, VFAs from a fermenter pilot plant equipped with a membrane bioreactor and fed with real sewage sludge has been monitored. The effect of headspace volume (HdV) on VFA production was studied for the first time to elucidate the optimal operation conditions. Specifically, three fermenter HdV values (namely, 20, 40 and 60% of the total volume) have been investigated. Results revealed that the HdV of 2…
The “manna” extracted from the ash trees still cultivated in Sicily from mythical food to pharmaceutical and nutraceutical resource
2022
“Manna” is the product obtained from the solidification of the elaborate sap that comes out of the incisions made during the summer season on the stem and on the main branches of some species of the genus Fraxinus (Oleaceae). The cultivation of manna ash trees dates back to ancient times in Sicily and elsewhere ash trees – known as sacred trees, a symbol of abundance and therefore auspicious – was increasingly widespread until the middle of the last century. Subsequently, however, the crop underwent a progressive decline, remaining relegated to restricted areas of Sicily, in particular in the Madonie district (Palermo, Italy). In this brief review, the essential characteristics of the manna…
Deciphering the Potential of Pre and Pro-Vitamin D of Mushrooms against Mpro and PLpro Proteases of COVID-19: An In Silico Approach
2022
Vitamin D’s role in combating the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), the virus causing COVID-19, has been established in unveiling viable inhibitors of COVID-19. The current study investigated the role of pre and pro-vitamin D bioactives from edible mushrooms against Mpro and PLpro proteases of SARS-CoV-2 by computational experiments. The bioactives of mushrooms, specifically ergosterol (provitamin D2), 7-dehydrocholesterol (provitamin-D3), 22,23-dihydroergocalciferol (provitamin-D4), cholecalciferol (vitamin-D3), and ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) were screened against Mpro and PLpro. Molecular docking analyses of the generated bioactive protease complexes unr…
Script-based Reappraisal Test - Introducing a new paradigm to investigate the effect of reappraisal inventiveness on reappraisal effectiveness
2022
The ability to regulate emotions is essential for psychological well-being. Therefore, it is particularly important to investigate the specific dynamics of emotion regulation. In a new approach, we developed a novel paradigm – the Script-based Reappraisal Test (SRT) – to measure the processes involved in reappraisal, especially reappraisal inventiveness, i.e. the ability to create multiple and differing reappraisals. The aim of this study was twofold: (1) experimentally validate the SRT and (2) investigate whether reappraisal inventiveness increases reappraisal effectiveness. Healthy students (N = 143) completed the SRT. In this task, we presented everyday emotional situations in textual fo…

Does high gonial angle increases the risk of mandibular angle fracture? A digital orthopantomographic study
2022
Fracture of mandibular angle comprises up to one third of mandibular fractures. Many local anatomical factors may increase the risk of such fractures. This study was conducted to investigate the risk of angle fractures with gonial angle measurements.A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on digital panoramic radiographs of 120 patients with isolated mandibular fractures. The patients were categorized into mandibular angle and other nonangle fracture groups. The gonial angle, antegoneal angle, ramus height was measured using Image J software.Out of 120 isolated mandibular fractures, 40 (33.33%) are angle fractures and 80 (66 .67%) are other nonangle isolated fractures. Seventy- …
On-surface Double layer polymerization enhancing GNR lengths on an Au(111) surface
2022
By performing controlled step-by-step annealing experiments of bilayers of GNR monomer reactants with multiple UHV-STM analysis of intermediate stages, we show that the coupling reaction takes place mainly in the uppermost layer of the monomer bilayer despite being separated from the Au(111) surface by the lowermost compact monomer carpet. This demonstrates that the initial monomer bilayer configuration plays acrucial role in lengthening the final GNR length once the intermediate dehalogenated polymer is cyclodehydrogenated. In this respect our experimental results directly provide the counter rationalization to the generalization of the metallic substrate catalytic role in the surface assi…

Genome-wide analyses of individual differences in quantitatively assessed reading- and language-related skills in up to 34,000 people
2022
Published August 23, 2022 The use of spoken and written language is a fundamental human capacity. Individual differences in reading- and language-related skills are influenced by genetic variation, with twin-based heritability estimates of 30 to 80% depending on the trait. The genetic architecture is complex, heterogeneous, and multifactorial, but investigations of contributions of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were thus far underpowered. We present a multicohort genome-wide association study (GWAS) of five traits assessed individually using psychometric measures (word reading, nonword reading, spelling, phoneme awareness, and nonword repetition) in samples of 13,633 to 33,959 part…
Multiring images of thin accretion disk of a regular naked compact object
2022
We discuss the importance of multi-ring images in the optical appearance of a horizonless spherically symmetric compact object, when illuminated by an optically thin accretion disk. Such an object corresponds to a sub-case of an analytically tractable extension of the Kerr solution dubbed as the {\it eye of the storm} by Simpson and Visser in [JCAP \textbf{03} (2022) 011], which merits in removing curvature singularities via an asymptotically Minkowski core, while harbouring both a critical curve and an infinite potential barrier at the center for null geodesics. This multi-ring structure is induced by light rays winding several times around the object, and whose luminosity is significantly…
Circulating histones contribute to monocyte and MDW alterations as common mediators in classical and COVID-19 sepsis
2022
Abstract Objective Histone proteins are physiologically involved in DNA packaging and gene regulation but are extracellularly released by neutrophil/monocyte extracellular traps and mediate thrombo-inflammatory pathways, associated to the severity of many human pathologies, including bacterial/fungal sepsis and COVID-19. Prominent and promising laboratory features in classic and viral sepsis emphasize monocyte distribution width (MDW), due to its ability to distinguish and stratify patients at higher risk of critical conditions or death. No data are available on the roles of histones as MDW modifiers. Design Comparison of MDW index was undertaken by routine hematology analyzer on whole bloo…
Believing in Hidden Plots is Associated with Decreased Behavioral Trust: Conspiracy Belief as Greater Sensitivity to Social Threat or Insensitivity T…
2022
Abstract Past research has demonstrated that conspiracy belief is linked to a low level of self-reported general trust. In four experimental online studies (total N = 1105) we examined whether this relationship translated into actual behavior. Specifically, since the decision to trust relies on the ability to detect potential social threat, we tested whether conspiracy believers are better at detecting actual threat, worse at detecting the absence of threat, or simply trust less, irrespective of any social cue. To this end, participants played multiple, independent rounds of the trust game, a behavioral measure for interpersonal trust. We manipulated social threat by presenting photographs …
Recovery of Lithium Carbonate from Dilute Li-Rich Brine via Homogenous and Heterogeneous Precipitation
2022
An extensive experimental campaign on Li recovery from relatively dilute LiCl solutions (i.e., Li+ similar to 4000 ppm) is presented to identify the best operating conditions for a Li2CO3 crystallization unit. Lithium is currently mainly produced via solar evaporation, purification, and precipitation from highly concentrated Li brines located in a few world areas. The process requires large surfaces and long times (18-24 months) to concentrate Li` up to 20,000 ppm. The present work investigates two separation routes to extract Li+ from synthetic solutions, mimicking those obtained from low-content Li+ sources through selective Li+ separation and further concentration steps: (i) addition of …

A systematic review on omics data (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metabolomics) in the role of microbiome in gallbladder disease
2022
Microbiotas are the range of microorganisms (mainly bacteria and fungi) colonizing multicellular, macroscopic organisms. They are crucial for several metabolic functions affecting the health of the host. However, difficulties hamper the investigation of microbiota composition in cultivating microorganisms in standard growth media. For this reason, our knowledge of microbiota can benefit from the analysis of microbial macromolecules (DNA, transcripts, proteins, or by-products) present in various samples collected from the host. Various omics technologies are used to obtain different data. Metagenomics provides a taxonomical profile of the sample. It can also be used to obtain potential funct…
Attention to diversity in Madrilenian classrooms. Teachers’ opinions

City marathons have evolved and grown exponentially in type and popularity, in their managerial complexity, and in terms of their financial impact on their host cities and the attraction of corporate sponsors. Most of the research on city marathons has focused on evaluating their broad economic, urban, tourist, social, sporting, and symbolic effects on host cities. However, less attention has been paid to analyzing key strategic decisions that could account for the evolution and growth of specific marathons and their influences on their management and success. This article, which addresses the cases of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the Marathon Valencia Trinidad Alfonso, examines…
