Prognostic significance of spatial and density analysis of T lymphocytes in colorectal cancer.
2022
Abstract Background Although high T cell density is a strong favourable prognostic factor in colorectal cancer, the significance of the spatial distribution of T cells is incompletely understood. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of tumour cell-T cell co-localisation and T cell densities. Methods We analysed CD3 and CD8 immunohistochemistry in a study cohort of 983 colorectal cancer patients and a validation cohort (N = 246). Individual immune and tumour cells were identified to calculate T cell densities (to derive T cell density score) and G-cross function values, estimating the likelihood of tumour cells being co-located with T cells within 20 µm radius (to derive T cell p…
How and when does leader knowledge hiding trickle down the organisational hierarchy in the tourism context? A team-level analysis
2022
This research aims to extend the literature on knowledge hiding and tourism by integrating the theoretical frameworks of social exchange and social learning. Employee knowledge hiding has scarcely been examined in the tourism literature while leader knowledge hiding has not been analysed at all. Recognising that knowledge hiding can seriously undermine the ability of employees to offer innovative customer service and that leaders’ knowledge hiding may trigger knowledge hiding chain reactions among tourism employees, this study attempts to fill this gap. Utilising multi-source, multi-timed and multi-level data, we hypothesise a multi-level mediation wherein leader knowledge hiding trickles d…

New bounds on axion-like particles from MicroBooNE
2022
Neutrino experiments lie at the edge of the intensity frontier and therefore can be exploited to search for new light particles weakly coupled to the visible sector. In this work we derive new constraints on axion-like particles (ALPs) using data from the MicroBooNE experiment, from a search for $e^+ e^-$ pairs pointing in the direction of the NuMI absorber. In particular, we consider the addition of higher-dimensional effective operators coupling the ALP to the electroweak gauge bosons. These would induce $K\to \pi a$ from kaon decay at rest in the NuMI absorber, as well as ALP decays into pairs of leptons or photons. We discuss in detail and compare various results obtained for the decay …
The structural versatility of proton sponge bismuth halides
2022
Hybrid halometalates containing lead, tin, bismuth and antimony and organic cations have recently shown a bevy of interesting photophysical properties. Aiming at finding chemically stable and thermally inert species, three halobismutate species of this class, crystallized with proton sponge-derived cations (PRSH), have been isolated as microcrystalline powders by mixing 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)-naphthalene (proton sponge, or PRS) and bismuth oxide in concentrated HX acids (X = Cl, Br and I). The two isomorphous (PRSH)3Bi2X9 (X = Br, I) species, containing isolated [Bi2X9]3- anions, are triclinic at room temperature and convert upon heating into a monoclinic structure through a displacive …

2022
This study investigated how teachers' visual focus of attention is associated with students' basic academic skills and teachers' individual support for students in basic academic skills in authentic classroom settings. Teachers' (N = 46) visual focus of attention in the classroom was measured with mobile eye-tracking, and students' (N = 879) literacy and math skills were tested in Grade 1. The results revealed that teachers' visual focus of attention in terms of fixation counts correlated with students' basic academic skills and teachers' individual support for students in literacy and math. Two case studies showed that teachers' visual focus of attention varied among students with differen…
De-naturalizing the “predatory”: A study of “bogus” publications at public sector universities in Pakistan
2022
Predatory publishing has recently emerged as a menace in academia. University professors and researchers often exploit this practice for their economic gains and institutional prestige. The present study investigates such existing predatory publishing practices in Pakistani public sector universities using Bourdieu’s (1991) concept of symbolic violence. For this purpose, we analyzed 495 articles published by 50 university professors in the social sciences and humanities over the period 2017-2021. We also conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 postgraduate students to gather their perspectives on publishing practices. The study shows that 69% of the sample papers were published in pred…
A (very) brief vademecum on biological nomenclature
2022
This editorial is aimed at explaining why the editors of Hydrobiologia are so concerned with biological nomenclature and why we ask our authors the utmost precision when referring to species in their papers... In these lines, we want to show that this is not just an old fashion formalism, but a necessity to correctly and univocally identify the biological subjects that are the basis of the research published in ecology-related journals.
MMSS: A storytelling simulation software to mitigate misinformation on social media
2022
This paper proposes a modular python implementation of a storytelling simulation. The software evaluates misinformation mitigation strategies over social media and visualizes the investigated scenarios’ potential outcomes. Our software integrates information diffusion and control models components. The control model mitigates users’ exposure to misinformation with social fairness awareness, while the diffusion model predicts the outcome from the control model. During the interaction of both models, a graph coloring algorithm traces the interaction within specific time intervals. Then, it generates meta-data to construct visuals of predicted near-future states of the social network to help s…
Gambling and gaming during COVID-19 : The role of mental health and social motives in gambling and gaming problems
2022
Background: The uncertain and stressful global situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to cause anxiety and impact people's mental health. Simultaneously, social distancing policies have isolated people from their normal social interactions. These societal changes have inevitably influenced gambling and gaming practices, and many people may have turned to betting or gaming as a means of social exchange. This study examined the influence of COVID-19 anxiety on increased mental health problems and their relationship to gambling and gaming problems. The mediating role of social motives for gambling and gaming was also investigated. Material and methods: Finnish adults (N = …
Profiles of mental well- and ill-being among elite athletes: Associations with sport-related demands and resources
2022
The aim of the present study was to identify profiles of elite athlete mental well- and ill-being and study how the profiles (i.e., subgroups of athletes) differed in sport-related demands and resources. A total of 259 Finnish elite athletes (n = 170 active and n = 89 retired) completed quantitative self-report inventories. Through cluster analysis, four profiles of mental well- and ill-being were identified. Profile 1 was overrepresented by retired, older, and male athletes, and characterized by good mental well-being. Profile 2 consisted mainly of active athletes who reported mild risk for alcohol abuse. Profile 3 consisted mainly of women who displayed possible presence of an eating diso…
Grapefruit IntegroPectin isolation via spray drying and via freeze drying: A comparison
2022
The comparison of grapefruit IntegroPectin powders isolated via spray drying and via freeze drying in terms of phenolic content, quantification of the most representative flavonoids (naringin and hesperidin), radical scavenging activity, total protein content and pH of the aqueous solutions provides relevant information. Except for the protein content and the antioxidant power, the two drying methods afford similar pectins. Optimization of the spray drying parameters allowed to maximize the yield of isolated pectin that nearly approached (>95%) the quantitative yield obtained via freeze drying.
Early bird or early worm? First-mover (dis)advantages and the success of web-based social enterprises
2022
Achieving the optimal market entry time is of immense strategic importance for entrepreneurs, especially in online markets, where web-based social entrepreneurial activity continues to grow. This raises the question of whether first-mover market entry actually pays off or if market entry as a (later) follower might be the better option. First-mover research has so far not adequately answered this question. Our work contributes to closing this gap by transferring first-mover theory to web-based social enterprises. We expand upon first-mover theory by reflecting on the winner-take-all hypothesis to better illuminate the mechanisms of market structure development and entry decisions. Our empir…
Does better education mitigate risky health behavior? A mendelian randomization study.
2022
Education and risky health behaviors are strongly negatively correlated. Education may affect health behaviors by enabling healthier choices through higher disposable income, increasing information about the harmful effects of risky health behaviors, or altering time preferences. Alternatively, the observed negative correlation may stem from reverse causality or unobserved confounders. Based on the data from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study linked to register-based information on educational attainment and family background, this paper identifies the causal effect of education on risky health behaviors. To examine causal effects, we used a genetic score as an instrument for year…

Comparing the use of ERA5 reanalysis dataset and ground-based agrometeorological data under different climates and topography in Italy
2022
Study region: The study region is represented by seven irrigation districts distributed under different climate and topography conditions in Italy. Study focus: This study explores the reliability and consistency of the global ERA5 single levels and ERA5-Land reanalysis datasets in predicting the main agrometeorological estimates commonly used for crop water requirements calculation. In particular, the reanalysis data was compared, variable-by-variable (e.g., solar radiation, R; air temperature, T; relative humidity, RH; wind speed, u; reference evapotranspiration, ET), with in situ agrometeorological observations obtained from 66 automatic weather stations (2008–2020). In addition, the pre…
Interesterification of triglycerides with methyl acetate for biodiesel production using a cyclodextrin-derived SnO@γ-Al2O3 composite as heterogeneous…
2022
International audience; Particle morphology and surface properties of metal oxides are topics of great importance in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we have developed a molecular-colloidal coassembly approach combined with an ultrasonic-assisted precipitation method to fabricate SnO@γ-Al2O3 composites with tuneable pore size and well-defined octahedral-shape crystal structure. The supramolecular assemblies formed between the randomly methylated β-cyclodextrin (RaMeβCD) and Pluronic F127 were employed as template to tailor the size and shape of γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles and direct their assembly almost exclusively on the surface of micrometer-sized SnO single …
A generalized stage-discharge relationship for sharp-crested power-law weirs by dimensional analysis and self-similarity
2022
Weirs are characterized by a stage-discharge relationship which mainly depends on the shape and dimensions of the hydraulic structure. A weir with symmetrical power-law sides is a versatile weir that can produce some known weir types (rectangular, triangular, parabolic) as special cases. In this paper, the outflow process of sharp-crested power-law weirs is investigated using the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. A new generalized theoretical stage-discharge relationship is proposed, and its applicability is tested using measurements available in the literature for different weir types.

Breeding near heterospecifics as a defence against brood parasites: can redstarts lower probability of cuckoo parasitism using neighbours?
2022
Breeding habitat choice based on the attraction to other species can provide valuable social information and protection benefits. In birds, species with overlapping resources can be a cue of good quality habitats; species with shared predators and/or brood parasites can increase joint vigilance or cooperative mobbing, while raptors may provide a protective umbrella against these threats. We tested whether the migratory common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) is attracted to breed near active nests of the great tit (Parus major), a keystone-information source for migrant passerine birds, or a top predator, the northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis). This system is unique to test these quest…
Exploring Oscillatory Dysconnectivity Networks in Major Depression During Resting State Using Coupled Tensor Decomposition
2022
Dysconnectivity of large-scale brain networks has been linked to major depression disorder (MDD) during resting state. Recent researches show that the temporal evolution of brain networks regulated by oscillations reveals novel mechanisms and neural characteristics of MDD. Our study applied a novel coupled tensor decomposition model to investigate the dysconnectivity networks characterized by spatio-temporal-spectral modes of covariation in MDD using resting electroencephalography. The phase lag index is used to calculate the functional connectivity within each time window at each frequency bin. Then, two adjacency tensors with the dimension of time frequency connectivity subject are constr…
Cybersecurity Attacks on Software Logic and Error Handling Within ADS-B Implementations: Systematic Testing of Resilience and Countermeasures
2022
Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is a cornerstone of the next-generation digital sky and is now mandated in several countries. However, there have been many reports of serious security vulnerabilities in the ADS-B architecture. In this paper, we demonstrate and evaluate the impact of multiple cyberattacks on ADS-B via remote radio frequency links that affected various network, processing, and display subsystems used within the ADS-B ecosystem. Overall we implemented and tested 12 cyberattacks on ADS-B in a controlled environment, out of which 5 attacks were presented or implemented for the first time. For all these attacks, we developed a unique testbed that consisted of 1…
Knowledge management and intellectual capital in the business model innovation of Costa Rican manufacturing firms
2022
Abstract The purpose of this article is to analyze the impact of knowledge management and intellectual capital on the ability of companies to generate business model innovation. To evaluate the proposed hypotheses, we surveyed a final sample of 100 Costa Rican manufacturing companies and analyzed the data using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that knowledge management positively contributes to the development of business model innovations. Similarly, intellectual capital has a direct positive influence on business model innovation. However, the direct contribution intellectual capital depends on the adoption of practices that encourage knowledg…
Photothermal nanofibrillar membrane based on hyaluronic acid and graphene oxide to treat Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infected wo…
2022
Here we reported the fabrication of an electrospun membrane based on a hyaluronic acid derivative (HA-EDA) to be used as a bandage for the potential treatment of chronic wounds. The membrane, loaded with graphene oxide (GO) and ciprofloxacin, showed photothermal properties and light-triggered drug release when irradiated with a near-infrared (NIR) laser beam. Free amino groups of HA-EDA derivative allowed autocrosslinking of the elec- trospun membrane; thus, a substantial enhancement in the hydrolytic resistance of the patch was obtained. In vitro antibacterial activity studies performed on Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa revealed that such electrospun membranes, due to the…
Vehicle routing problems with drones equipped with multi-package payload compartments
2022
The vehicle routing problem with drones (VRP-D) consists of designing combined truck-drone routes and schedules to serve a set of customers with specific requests and time constraints. In this paper, VRP-D is extended to include a fleet of drones equipped with multi-package payload compartments to serve more customers on a single trip. Moreover, a drone can return to a truck, different from the one from which it started, to swap its depleted battery and/or to pick up more packages. This problem, denoted as VRP-D equipped with multi-package payload compartments (VRP-D-MC), aims to maximize total profit. In this work, an adaptive multi-start simulated annealing (AMS-SA) metaheuristic algorith…

Agile Enterprise Transformations : Surveying the Many Facets of Agility for the Hybrid Era
2022
Agile companies are not uniform. Consequently, agile transformations are conceived broadly, ranging from adopting agile methods and practices in software development teams or functions to building all-encompassing enterprise agility. Moreover, the targeted effects of agility may vary, and the success of transformations and the attainment of agility are measured in various ways. In this paper, based on a recent industrial survey study, we scrutinize holistically why companies want to transform, what types of agility they are aiming at, and how they gauge transformations. The survey data was collected during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Most of the respondents were in large or very large co…

Extraction of lipids from microalgae using classical and innovative approaches
2022
Microalgae, as a photosynthetic autotrophic organism, contain a variety of bioactive compounds, including lipids, proteins, polysaccharides, which have been applied in food, medicine, and fuel industries, among others. Microalgae are considered a good source of marine lipids due to their high content in unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) and can be used as a supplement/replacement for fish-based oil. The high concentration of docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acids (EPA) in microalgae lipids, results in important physiological functions, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and immune regulation, being also a prerequisite for its development and application. In this paper, a variety…
Superalgebras: Polynomial identities and asymptotics
2022
To any superalgebra A is attached a numerical sequence cnsup(A), n≥1, called the sequence of supercodimensions of A. In characteristic zero its asymptotics are an invariant of the superidentities satisfied by A. It is well-known that for a PI-superalgebra such sequence is exponentially bounded and expsup(A)=limn→∞cnsup(A)n is an integer that can be explicitly computed. Here we introduce a notion of fundamental superalgebra over a field of characteristic zero. We prove that if A is such an algebra, then C1ntexpsup(A)n≤cnsup(A)≤C2ntexpsup(A)n, where C1>0,C2,t are constants and t is a half integer that can be explicitly written as a linear function of the dimension of the even part of A an…
Average Age of Information in Wireless Powered Mobile Edge Computing System
2022
Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been recognized as a promising technique to provide enhanced computation services for low-power wireless devices at the network edge. How to evaluate the timeliness of the task and data delivery is critical for the development of MEC applications. Considering a wireless powered MEC system, in this letter we study the average age of information (AoI), which is a crucial performance metric to measure the freshness of information. Specifically, in the considered system, a sensor node harvests energy from an energy transmitter and transmits computation tasks to the MEC server. The charging time of the sensor node’s capacitor, the waiting time and service time at …
