Numerical studies to detect chaotic motion in the full planar averaged three-body problem

2023

AbstractIn this paper, the author deals with a well-known problem of Celestial Mechanics, namely the three-body problem. A numerical analysis has been done in order to prove existence of chaotic motions of the full-averaged problem in particular configurations. Full because all the three bodies have non-negligible masses and averaged because the Hamiltonian describing the system has been averaged with respect to a fast angle. A reduction of degrees of freedom and of the phase-space is performed in order to apply the notion of covering relations and symbolic dynamics.

Beyond emotional intelligence: The new construct of meta-emotional intelligence

2023

Meta-emotional intelligence is a recently developed multidimensional construct that, starting from the original ability model of emotional intelligence, focuses on the cognitive aspects of emotional abilities and on the metacognitive and meta-emotional processes that influence our emotional life. Thus, meta-emotional intelligence is the combination of emotional abilities and meta-emotional dimensions, such as the beliefs about emotions, the self-concept about one's emotional abilities, and the self-evaluation of performance. This article aims to illustrate the theoretical and methodological background of this construct and to describe the IE-ACCME test, an original multi-method tool that ha…

Preceding Host History of Conjugative Resistance Plasmids Affects Intra- and Interspecific Transfer Potential from Biofilm

2023

Conjugative plasmids can confer antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to their host bacterium. The plasmids disperse even between distantly related host species, rescuing the host from otherwise detrimental effects of antibiotics. Little is known about the role of these plasmids in the spread of AMR during antibiotic treatment. One unstudied question is whether the past evolutionary history of a plasmid in a particular species creates host specificity in its rescue potential or if interspecific coevolution can improve interspecific rescues. To study this, we coevolved the plasmid RP4 under three different host settings; solely Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae, or alternating between both …

Integration of 3D modelling with photogrammetry applied on historical images for cultural heritage

2023

The recovery of past architecture through 3D modelling is an important challenge today to the preservation of heritage. Decisive support for the interpretation of architecture can certainly come from historical images and old photographs that fix a portion of space at a specific time, keeping it unchanged over the years. This acquisition is decisive for studying architectures of the past that can be reinterpreted and analysed. Photos, in fact, capture the advance of time and the life of a building at a precise historical moment, becoming essential documents for the study and knowledge of heritage. An additional advantage is when these old images can be processed through Structure for Motion…

A Guide to Perform 3D Histology of Biological Tissues with Fluorescence Microscopy

2023

The analysis of histological alterations in all types of tissue is of primary importance in pathology for highly accurate and robust diagnosis. Recent advances in tissue clearing and fluorescence microscopy made the study of the anatomy of biological tissue possible in three dimensions. The combination of these techniques with classical hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining has led to the birth of three-dimensional (3D) histology. Here, we present an overview of the state-of-the-art methods, highlighting the optimal combinations of different clearing methods and advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques for the investigation of all types of biological tissues. Intermediate Isolation System with Nonlinear Lower Structure and Isolation System

2023

This paper reports a study on the Intermediate Isolation System (IIS) applied to existing buildings. This kind of application is particularly suitable when a vertical addition is planned for buildings in seismic zones; in such a case, an isolation system can be placed at the base of the extension to prevent the increase, or, better, to reduce the seismic demand on the existing structure. In previous works, parametric response spectrum analyses have been carried out on lumped mass models by varying the period of the isolation system. As a result, a sort of IIS design spectrum has been derived and used for selecting design solutions for the vertical extension that minimize the overall seismic…

NAD+ repletion with niacin counteracts cancer cachexia

2023

AbstractCachexia is a debilitating wasting syndrome and highly prevalent comorbidity in cancer patients. It manifests especially with energy and mitochondrial metabolism aberrations that promote tissue wasting. We recently identified nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) loss to associate with muscle mitochondrial dysfunction in cancer hosts. In this study we confirm that depletion of NAD+ and downregulation of Nrk2, an NAD+ biosynthetic enzyme, are common features of severe cachexia in different mouse models. Testing NAD+ repletion therapy in cachectic mice reveals that NAD+ precursor, vitamin B3 niacin, efficiently corrects tissue NAD+ levels, improves mitochondrial metabolism and amel…

Fluorescent Boron Oxide Nanodisks as Biocompatible Multi-messenger Sensors for Ultrasensitive Ni$^{2+}$ Detection

2023

Boron-based nanocomposites are very promising for a wide range of technological applications, spanning from microelectronics to nanomedicine. A large variety of B-based nanomaterials has been already observed, such as borospherene, B nanotubes and nanoparticles, and boron nitride nanoparticles. However, their fabrication usually involves toxic precursors or leads to very low yields or small boron atom concentration. In this work, we report the synthesis of nanometric B$_{2}$O$_{3}$ nanodisks, a family of nanomaterials with a quasi-2D morphology capable of intense fluorescence in the visible range. Such as boron-based nanomaterial, which we synthesized by pulsed laser ablation of a boron tar…

The Relationship between Knowing Sign Language and Quality of Life among Italian People Who Are Deaf: A Cross-Sectional Study

2023

Deafness is a medical condition with important relational implications. This condition could affect well-being and self-esteem and cause social anxiety. Sign language is not only a simple mimic but can be considered as a different kind of communication that could be protective for those who have learned it. However, some people do not use sign language because they think it can be marginalizing. The present study aimed to compare the quality of life (QoL) between people who learned Italian sign language as their first language with those who had never learned it or learned it later. This cross-sectional study involved 182 deaf Italian adults (70.3% females) who were recruited from Ente Nazi…

Multiple Theories of Change for innovation governance

2023

The Theory of Change approach aims to clarify the underlying logic of an intervention by first identifying the problem addressed and the desired outcome, and then backwards mapping the actions taken and the expected results and outcomes. In so doing, it aims to simplify the expression of intermediate goals and indicators and provide a common reference for the participants and stakeholders of the intervention itself. As such, it is similar to corporate ‘mission statements’ in that it aims to provide a single, unifying description of the what, why and how of an intervention. By framing the approach in terms of the ‘change’ required as a means of addressing a problem, Theory of Change is essen…

Degraded Gerber Saddles in RC Bridges

2023

Sudden failure of reinforced concrete (RC) or prestressed concrete (PC) Gerber saddles of bridges and viaducts has occurred all around in the word in the last few years due to corrosion of steel bars. The danger of sudden and brittle failure is often due to general and pitting corrosion of steel bars, concrete crushing, and loss of bond in steel bars. In this paper, the flexural response of reinforced concrete Gerber supports under their self-weight with or without service loads was investigated through determination of the load-deflection response of beams, with the focus on the consequences of pitting corrosion and loss of bond in steel bars. A simplified strut-and-tie model was developed…

Micrometer-size crystalline monolayer MoS2 domains obtained by sulfurization of molybdenum oxide ultrathin films

2023

In this work, the formation of micrometer-size crystalline monolayer (1L) MoS2 flakes with triangular shape and a central multilayer core is obtained by the sulfurization at 800 °C of pre-deposited ultrathin MoOx films (1.2–1.8 nm) on c-sapphire substrates. The thickness uniformity, crystalline quality, doping and strain distribution in the MoS2 flakes as a function of the initial MoOx thickness was evaluated by micro-Raman (μR) mapping. The excellent crystalline quality of the triangular 1L-MoS2 flakes was confirmed by micro-photoluminescence (μPL) maps, showing a very intense peak at ∼1.85 eV, that decreases in the central part, as expected for multilayers MoS2. A new approach to portfolio selection based on forecasting

2023

In this paper we analyze the portfolio selection problem from a novel perspective based on the analysis and prediction of the time series corresponding to the portfolio’s value. Namely, we define the value of a particular portfolio at the time of its acquisition. Using the time series of historical prices of the different financial assets, we calculate backward the value that said portfolio would have had in past time periods. A damped trend model is then used to analyze this time series and to predict the future values of the portfolio, providing estimates of the mean and variance for different forecasting horizons. These measures are used to formulate the portfolio selection problem, whic…

Recursive Selective Harmonic Elimination for Multilevel Inverters: Mathematical Formulation and Experimental Validation

2023

A recursive method that eliminates +1 harmonics and their respective multiples from the output voltage of a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters with = 2 dc sources ( = 1, 2, 3,...) is proposed. It solves 2×2 linear systems with not singular matrices and always gives an exact solution with very low computational effort. Simulated results in three-phase five, nine, seventeen and thirty three level CHB inverters, and experimental results in five-level inverter demonstrate the validity of the method.
