Perceived motivational climate influences athletes’ emotion regulation strategies, emotions, and psychobiosocial experiences
2022
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether athletes’ perceptions about the motivational climate created by their coach influence emotion regulation strategies (i.e., cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), emotions, and psychobiosocial experiences of athletes. A sample of 459 competitive athletes (201 women, 258 men), aged 16–35 years, drawn from individual and team sports, completed self-assessment measures of perceived motivational climate, emotion regulation, sport emotions, and psychobiosocial experiences. Main results from structural equation modeling showed that perceived mastery climate was positively related to cognitive reappraisal, pleasant emotions, and psycho…
Microbiome response to foam fractionation and ozonation in RAS
2022
Efficient water treatment is required to maintain high water quality and control microbial growth in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Here, we examined the effects of two treatment methods, ozonation and foam fractionation, separately and combined, on the microbiology in twelve identical experimental RAS with rainbow trout (Oncorhyncus mykiss) during 8 weeks. Microbes suspended in water and growing in biofilter biofilms were examined using flow cytometry analysis and high throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that foam fractionation did not cause large changes in abundance or overall community composition of free-living microbes. Instead, through decreasing …
The role of individual and parental expectations in student-athletes’ career adaptability profiles
2022
To support holistic development, adolescent student-athletes are encouraged to integrate sport with education/academics (i.e., dual careers). Career adaptability, as a psychological resource, may help youth athletes cope with transitions and successfully manage their careers. Individuals with a plan and higher expectations for the future demonstrate higher career adaptability and are better prepared for the future. In the present study, we examined what kinds of distinct career adaptability profiles could be identified among youth athletes in Finland at the transition stage to a sports high school (i.e., specialized school for athletes). Moreover, we investigated whether youth athletes’ suc…
Transformative, interdisciplinary and intercultural learning for developing HEI students’ sustainability-oriented competences : a case study

AbstractThe literature has produced relevant theoretical insights into pedagogical frameworks, tools and competences that would be best suited to teach sustainability at higher education (HE). This article contributes to such a discussion using a course on sustainability developed by us as a case study. Two research questions are tackled in this article: (1) How to empower students to address urban sustainability challenges through the inclusion of transformative, interdisciplinary and intercultural learning into the current HE system? (2) Which pedagogical tools can be used to develop students’ sustainability-oriented competences? To address the research questions, the case study consists …
Influence of B content on microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties of CVD Ti(B,N) coatings
2022
Within this work the effect of the B content on the microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties of CVD Ti(B,N) coatings is investigated. Ti(B,N) coatings with B contents from 0 (fcc-TiN) to ∼5, ∼15, ∼30, ∼45 and 66 (h-TiB2) at.% have been deposited by CVD. The elemental composition of the coatings was confirmed by ERDA and their microstructure was investigated using XRD and SEM. With increasing B content, a transition from a fcc to a h-dominated structure via dual-phase fcc/h-Ti(B,N) was observed, which was accompanied by a decreasing grain size from the µm to nm range. Combinatorial use of Raman spectroscopy, XPS and APT measurements indicated B-rich grain boundary segregat…

Photobiomodulation therapy and endodontic treatment of teeth with apical periodontitis using 940-nm diode laser. Report of two cases
2022
Background: Diode laser (DL) can be used in endodontics both for its bactericidal effect inside the root canal system (RCS) and for photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) to accelerate the repair of periradicular bone tissue. Clinical Cases: This work presents two cases of pulp necrosis/asymptomatic apical periodontitis (AAP) that were treated with 940-nm DL, administered both to disinfect the root canal and to apply PBMT to the periradicular tissues. The cases were analysed by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Discussion: DL has become widely accepted due to its high antimicrobial effectiveness and its ability to accelerate the repair of large apical lesions by biostimulation. Nevertheless,…
Testing of a model for risk factors for eating disorders and higher weight among emerging adults: Baseline evaluation
2022
Although a range of risk factors have been identified for disordered eating and weight status, the breadth of risk factors have been rarely considered within a single, comprehensive model. The robustness of these findings across countries also remains an open question. The present study sampled 6272 participants aged 18-30 years from eight countries in an attempt to evaluate combined and unique predictors for these two conditions, and to explore possible cross-country differences in these models. Participants completed a range of demographic, biological, behavioral, psychological, and sociocultural measures to test a comprehensive model of the contributions of these predictors for disordere…
A novel compound heterozygous mutation in PYGM gene associated with McArdle’s disease
2022
McArdle's disease is an autosomal recessive glycogenosis due to mutation in the myophosphorylase gene (PYGM) resulting in a pure myopathy. The clinical onset typically occurs in childhood with cramps, myalgia, and intolerance to physical exercise, although late onset forms are also reported. We describe a case of a 17-year-old male complaining of cramps and myalgia following brief and intense exercise. The patient reported marked improvement in muscle fatigability few minutes after starting aerobic exercise. When he was a child, he had experienced few episodes of vomiting, nausea, and black colored urine following physical activity. Laboratory testings revealed high creatine kinase serum le…

LeMMINGs - IV. The X-ray properties of a statistically complete sample of the nuclei in active and inactive galaxies from the Palomar sample
2022
All 280 of the statistically complete Palomar sample of nearby ( 20° have been observed at 1.5 GHz as part of the LeMMINGs e-MERLIN legacy survey. Here, we present Chandra X-ray observations of the nuclei of 213 of these galaxies, including a statistically complete sub-set of 113 galaxies in the declination range 40° <δ < 65°. We observed galaxies of all optical spectral types, including ‘active’ galaxies [e.g. low-ionization nuclear emission line regions (LINERs) and Seyferts] and ‘inactive’ galaxies like HII galaxies and absorption line galaxies (ALG). The X-ray flux limit of our survey is 1.65 × 10−14 erg s−1 cm−2 (0.3−10 keV). We detect X-ray emission coincident within 2 arcsec of the n…
Heterogeneous photocatalytic aqueous succinic acid formation from maleic acid reduction
2022
This study reports the anaerobic reduction of maleic acid to succinic acid in aqueous dispersion of different TiO2 based photocatalysts. Some home prepared and commercial solids containing different polymorphic phases of TiO2 and loaded with Pt and Ru were compared at different acidic pHs. The aim of the work was to verify the feasibility of the process and to determine the best samples and the optimal experimental conditions of the reaction. The best selectivity towards succinic acid was 23.2 % at 70 % of maleic acid conversion. Fumaric acid was also formed as another high added value compound, and its quantity was related to the experimental conditions and the photocatalyst used.
Public-Interest Litigation before the ECtHR: Towards a Human Rights Approach to the “Universal” Protection of Cultural Heritage?
2022
Taking as a starting point the inadmissibility decision issued in 2019 by the European Court of Human Rights in the case Ahunbay and others v. Turkey, the article proposes some reflections concerning the possibility of lodging applications with the Court which are aimed at protecting collective interests and common goods as recognized (or emerging) under international law. While the case at hands concerned the specific issue of the protection of cultural heritage, it cannot be denied that, more generally, the importance in contemporary international law of public-interest litigation before international courts and tribunals is growing. And indeed, it is much discussed in the field of the pr…
Mining indigenous territories: Consensus, tensions and ambivalences in the Salar de Atacama
2022
Lithium mining in Chile’s Salar de Atacama (SdA) has a relatively long and controversial history, especially when it comes to the local Indigenous peoples. In this context, this paper looks at the ways mining activities, and different visions of territory and indigeneity co-produce each other in the particular context of the SdA. For this, we use historical and ethnographic methods and draw on studies in anthropology and geography. We aim to escape simplistic images of Indigenous peoples’ reactions to mining as reflecting victimhood, resistance, or strategic pragmatism, and show instead how individuals and groups organize and express themselves in ambivalent ways, maintaining complex relati…
The Concept of Knowledge Society and Health Awareness at the University of Palermo
2022
In the last chapter of this volume, a series of activities and effects for the community will be illustrated in the Third University Mission (TM) context, namely those relating to knowledge society and health awareness. The TM of National Universi- ties includes traditionally the set of activities with which universities enter into direct interaction with society, providing a contribution that accompanies the two tradi- tional actions, such as research (in which mainly the interaction is with scientific communities) and teaching (in which an interaction takes place with the students). There are two possible forms of TM: 1) economic enhancement of knowledge (in order to encourage economic gr…
Effects of contextual variables on strategic investment decision-making styles: An empirical study from Pakistan.
2022
There is a gap in the literature of strategic investment decision making (SIDM) concerning the links between context variables, infrastructure and SIDM practices (or SIDM styles) in developing countries. This research aims to fill that gap. Survey data (N = 128) from the manufacturing companies listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange was collected via an e-mailed questionnaire and visits to the companies. Data are analyzed with factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results reveal what we call four different SIDM styles (or emphases): managerial power-, financial analysis-, top management-, and strategy-based investing. These styles are considered to be novel perspectives on SI…
Photocycle of point defects in highly- and weakly-germanium doped silica revealed by transient absorption measurements with femtosecond tunable pump.
2022
AbstractWe report pump-probe transient absorption measurements addressing the photocycle of the Germanium lone pair center (GLPC) point defect with an unprecedented time resolution. The GLPC is a model point defect with a simple and well-understood electronic structure, highly relevant for several applications. Therefore, a full explanation of its photocycle is fundamental to understand the relaxation mechanisms of such molecular-like systems in solid state. The experiment, carried out exciting the sample resonantly with the ultraviolet (UV) GLPC absorption band peaked at 5.1 eV, gave us the possibility to follow the defect excitation-relaxation dynamics from the femto-picosecond to the nan…
Leadership in internationalization strategies
2022
This paper examines leadership in internationalization strategies for an asymmetric cost duopoly where firms choose between exports and foreign direct investment (FDI) in a sequential setting. The incentive to lead and to engage in FDI is stronger for the more efficient firm. With sequential choices and the efficient firm playing in advance, it is less likely that firms pick identical internationalization strategies in equilibrium, as compared with simultaneous choices; this is more so for greater cost asymmetry. It also happens for large enough oligopoly profitability when the inefficient firm plays in advance. Follow-the-leader behaviour in FDI arises for low values of the setup cost. Alt…
Fluid-structure interaction approach with smoothed particle hydrodynamics and particle-spring systems
2022
This paper presents a novel three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction (FSI) approach, where the meshless smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is used to simulate the motion of incompressible fluid flows, whilst structures are represented by a simplified approach based on particle-spring systems. The proposed FSI technique allows to use independent spatial-temporal resolutions for the fluid and structural computational domains. The particle-spring elastic constants are calibrated and relationships with the mechanical material properties, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, are determined. Fluid and structure computational domains are separated by interfaces made of triangular el…
Diagnostic challenges in a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the maxilla presenting as exposed necrotic bone
2022
Lymphoma is the second most common malignancy in the head and neck area, affecting both nodal and extranodal sites, including oral soft and hard tissues, usually in the form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). However, lymphomas of the jaws, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), the most common type of NHL, are very rare and may cause significant diagnostic challenges resembling common jaw pathologies, such as periapical lesions, osteomyelitis and osteonecrosis. The aim of this paper is to present a rare case of DLBCL in an 84-years-old diabetic male patient on methylprednisolone treatment for autoimmune hemolytic anemia. The lesion appeared clinically as exposed necrotic bone of th…
Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer for the simultaneous selective extraction of phenoxy acid herbicides from environmental water samples
2022
[EN] A selective magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) was synthetized with 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid as template and 4-vinylpiridine as monomer in presence of vinylized magnetite nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and vibrating sample magnetometry were applied to characterize the resulting material. The synthesized MMIP was applied as sorbent in magnetic molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MMISPE) for selective extraction of a mixture of the five herbicides 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA), 4-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)butyric acid (MCPB), mecoprop (MCPP), fenoxa…
A micro-founded approach to regional innovation in Italy
2022
Recent regional studies have taken a micro-founded perspective to uncover the influence of the external environment on the firm-level innovative performance. Despite the marked spatial disparities, there is a general lack of recent evidence on Italian regional innovation from a micro perspective. This paper fills this gap in the evidence base by estimating regional Knowledge Production Functions using Italian micro-data collected in the Community Innovation Survey. In particular, here we focus on the regional differences in the relationship between innovative inputs and outputs and on the ability of firms to absorb external knowledge. This analysis allows us to outline different regional in…
FMapper: Scalable read mapper based on succinct hash index on SunWay TaihuLight
2022
Abstract One of the most important application in bioinformatics is read mapping. With the rapidly increasing number of reads produced by next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, there is a need for fast and efficient high-throughput read mappers. In this paper, we present FMapper – a highly scalable read mapper on the TaihuLight supercomputer optimized for its fourth-generation ShenWei many-core architecture (SW26010). In order to fully exploit the computational power of the SW26010, we employ dynamic scheduling of tasks, asynchronous I/O and data transfers and implement a vectorized version of the banded Myers algorithm tailored to the 256 bit vector registers of the SW26010. Our perf…
Fibred-categorical obstruction theory
2022
Abstract We set up a fibred categorical theory of obstruction and classification of morphisms that specialises to the one of monoidal functors between categorical groups and also to the Schreier-Mac Lane theory of group extensions. Further applications are provided to crossed extensions and crossed bimodule butterflies, with in particular a classification of non-abelian extensions of unital associative algebras in terms of Hochschild cohomology.
Cross-country variation in patience, persistent current account imbalances and the external wealth of nations
2022
This paper is the first to utilize large-scale international surveys on economic preferences to examine the long-run relationships between patience, current accounts and external wealth. We find robust empirical evidence that countries with more patient individuals tend to run persistent current account surpluses, which in turn result in the accumulation of foreign assets. This theoretically plausible but empirically unexplored relationship holds true for euro area current account imbalances, global current account imbalances and net foreign asset positions worldwide. While the existing current account literature concentrates on proximate macroeconomic determinants, this paper’s extension o…
Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) for Unresectable Peritoneal Metastases. Feasibility, Safety and Efficacy Outcomes
2022
Recently, a novel method for chemotherapy administration inside the abdominal cavity gained wide attention among surgical oncologists dealing with peritoneal surface malignancies. Based on laparoscopy, Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) is a drug delivery system designed to overcome the known hurdles of intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Preclinical data suggest that the aerosol drug that PIPAC creates and the increased intraabdominal pressure obtained during laparoscopy provide highly effective distribution of cytotoxic compounds into tumor nodules. Several studies have documented the favorable safety profile and promising clinical outcomes of repetitive PIPAC in different…

Development of a Real-Time Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Assay for the Rapid Detection of Olea Europaea Geminivirus
2022
A real-time loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was developed for simple, rapid and efficient detection of the Olea europaea geminivirus (OEGV), a virus recently reported in different olive cultivation areas worldwide. A preliminary screening by end-point PCR for OEGV detection was conducted to ascertain the presence of OEGV in Sicily. A set of six real-time LAMP primers, targeting a 209-nucleotide sequence elapsing the region encoding the coat protein (AV1) gene of OEGV, was designed for specific OEGV detection. The specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy of the diagnostic assay were determined. The LAMP assay showed no cross-reactivity with other geminiviruses and was allow…
