Non-readmission decisions in the intensive care unit under French rules: A nationwide survey of practices.
2018
International audience; Purpose: We investigated, using a multicentre survey of practices in France, the practices of ICU physicians concerning the decision not to readmit to the ICU, in light of current legislation.Materials and methods: Multicentre survey of practices among French ICU physicians via electronic questionnaire in January 2016. Questions related to respondents’ practices regarding re-admission of patients to the ICU and how these decisions were made. Criteria were evaluated by the health care professionals as regards importance for non-readmission.Results: In total, 167 physicians agreed to participate, of whom 165 (99%) actually returned a completed questionnaire from 58 ICU…
Why the share of small amount pensions is so substantial in Latvia?
2018
More than 70% of all old-age pensions in Latvia are smaller than 300 euro, which is close to the monetary value of the at-risk-of-poverty threshold. There is a number of reasons for it: the lack of non-contributory component and inadequately low minimum pensions, the absence of redistribution mechanisms in the mandatory notional defined contribution (pillar I) and funded (pillar II) schemes, an unfair conversion of pre-reform employment record into pension formula, and a high tax burden on pensioners. The authors proposed a package of measures to improve the situation: an introduction of basis pensions, linking minimum pensions to the country average wages, increasing income tax exempt for …
Real-time feedback systems for cardiopulmonary resuscitation training: time for a paradigm shift.

Among the new tools to improve the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), real-time feedback systems (FS) have been largely studied during the last decade (1). These systems permit the real-time analysis of CPR.
Dimethyl 2,2′-[Carbonylbis(azanediyl)](2S,2′S)-bis[3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoate]
2018
The thus‐far unknown ureic derivative dimethyl 2,2′‐[carbonylbis(azanediyl)](2S,2′S)‐ bis[3‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)propanoate] has been efficiently synthesized by enantiospecific oxidative carbonylation of readily available L‐tyrosine methyl ester, using a very simple catalytic system (PdI2 in conjunction with KI) under relatively mild conditions (100 °C for 5 h in DME as the solvent and under 20 atm of a 4:1 mixture CO‐air).
Incidence, prevalence and clinical correlates of antidepressant-emergent mania in bipolar depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
2018
Background: Treatment-emergent mania (TEM) represents a common phenomenon inconsistently reported across primary studies, warranting further assessment. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines were conducted. Major electronic databases were searched from inception to May 2017 to assess the incidence and prevalence rates and clinical features associated with manic switch among bipolar depressed patients receiving antidepressants, using meta-regression and subgroup analysis. Results: Overall, 10 098 depressed patients wit…
Executive function and life-space mobility in old age
2018
Life-space assessment incorporates all movements in terms of the distance from home, the frequency of movement and the need of assistance for movement. Executive function (EF) is an important higher order cognitive ability that controls and guides people’s goal-directed actions. We examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between EF and life-space mobility, and investigated if perceived walking difficulties, lower extremity performance, and transportation difficulties explain the association. Methods 157 community-dwelling persons aged 76–91 years participated in the study at the baseline, and 103 of them in 2-year follow-up study. Based on the distribution on the Trail Ma…
Patterns of Working Time and Work Hour Fit in Europe
2018
The requirements for more flexible and lean forms of production that are able to adapt to demand cycles, both quantitatively and functionally, are common in all advanced economies. At the same time, the flexibilization of working times and work places has become an increasing focus for the analysis of quality of work and life (i.e. work-life balance). This chapter approaches flexibilization as a transition from an industrial to a post-industrial working time regime. The new post-industrial working time regime is usually characterized by deregulation of collective norms, diversification of the length (short and long hours) and pattern of working time (unsocial hours), increasing work intensi…
Breathprinting in childhood asthma
2018
The two major challenges facing researchers and clinicians in finding an objective test for asthma are: (i) there is no clear gold standard test, and (ii) there is no current method to accurately measure both the airway obstruction and the airway inflammatory components of asthma. Looking forward, we need to re-evaluate our understanding of existing tests to see how to bridge the gap between “test” and “treatment,” and explore new methodologies, especially for detecting airway inflammation. The development and validation of noninvasive biomarkers for asthma diagnosis and treatment is an expanding field of research. In this context, breathomics is considered particularly appealing in view of…
Network embeddedness in the internationalization of biotechnology entrepreneurs
2018
This study investigates how entrepreneurs of biotech enterprises embed in domestic and international networks so as to internationalize. We advance a contextual framework of embeddedness of internationalizing entrepreneurs, providing a contribution (i) by synthesizing and applying existing conceptual insights from the networking literature to provide a more culturally sensitive view of getting embedded for international entrepreneurship in the biotech industry and (ii) by adding insights into the practices and (micro)processes of how and in what ways embeddedness integrates with the internationalization of biotech entrepreneurs. Our study involves six entrepreneurs from Canada, Finland, and…

Dissecting and Reassembling Color Correction Algorithms for Image Stitching
2018
This paper introduces a new compositional framework for classifying color correction methods according to their two main computational units. The framework was used to dissect fifteen among the best color correction algorithms and the computational units so derived, with the addition of four new units specifically designed for this work, were then reassembled in a combinatorial way to originate about one hundred distinct color correction methods, most of which never considered before. The above color correction methods were tested on three different existing datasets, including both real and artificial color transformations, plus a novel dataset of real image pairs categorized according to …
Molecular strategies to increase yeast iron accumulation and resistance.
2018
All eukaryotic organisms rely on iron as an essential micronutrient for life because it participates as a redox-active cofactor in multiple biological processes. However, excess iron can generate reactive oxygen species that damage cellular macromolecules. The low solubility of ferric iron at physiological conditions increases the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia. A common strategy to treat iron deficiency consists of dietary iron supplementation. The baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is used as a model eukaryotic organism, but also as a feed supplement. In response to iron deficiency, the yeast Aft1 transcription factor activates cellular iron acquisition. However, when constituti…

W drodze do źródeł bytu. Symbolika czarnomorskiej przestrzeni w "Sonetach Krymskich" Adama Mickiewicza
2018
In 1825, Adam Mickiewicz - who was temporarily staying in Odessa by the tsar's sentence of exile - went on a trip to the Crimea. The Crimean Sonnets, recognized by the researchers of Romanticism as revolutionary and innovative, are a direct account of this trip. One of the essential poetic intentions of this cycle is to visualize the vastness of space experienced by the lyrical "I". Space - It has to be emphasized here - of the Black Sea region. This essay is an attempt to read its ambiguous symbolism. In the light of the research in the field of humanistic geography on the phenomenon of "space" and "place", It is interpreted here as the implication of the freedom of the world, which, along…
Dying to Save Lives: Zell Kravinsky, Peter Singer, and Lethal Organ Donation
2018
In 2003, after disbursing the bulk of his accumulated fortune of forty-five million dollars to various charities, Zell Kravinsky made the even greater altruistic decision to donate one of his kidneys to a complete stranger. In doing so he incurred the wrath of many in the psychiatric and health professions who questioned his sanity. In response, Kravinsky argued that refusal to donate would have constituted a violation of his belief in “maximum human utility” – a philosophical concept that insists we give up as much as we can for the good of others. Kravinsky has since stated that he would undergo a lethal organ donation in order to save a greater number of people from death, or to save peo…

”Sivuttain mitattuna hänen elämänsä on hirvittävän pitkä.” : Kalle Päätalon representaatio Iijoki-sarjan kirja-arvosteluissa
2018
Kalle Päätalo on eräs kaikkien aikojen luetuimmista suomalaisista kirjailijoista, jonka kirjoja on painettu yli 3,5 miljoonaa kappaletta. Tutkielmani tarkoituksena on selvittää, millä tavalla Päätaloa representoidaan kirja-arvosteluissa ja minkälaisia diskursseja arvosteluissa esiintyy. Tutkimukseni teoreettisena viitekehyksenä toi-mivat systeemis-funktionaalinen kieliteoria (SF) ja kriittinen diskurssintutkimus. Tutkimuskysymyksiini vastaan hyödyntämällä representaation ja diskurssin käsitteitä. Diskurssit liittyvät erilaisiin vakiintuneisiin puhetapoihin ja representaatio tarkoittaa kirjaimellisesti ’asioiden uudelleen esittämistä’. Päätaloa on tutkittu aiemmin lähinnä kieli-ideologisesta…
Visual working memory resource allocation mechanism in consolidation and maintenance phase
2018
Visual working memory (VWM) is a system for actively maintaining visual information to meet the needs of an ongoing task. It allows individuals to store visual input information from a complex outside environment and provides storage space as an information buffer platform to help integrate information into a continuous visual experience. This research examined the consolidation and maintenance phase of the VWM resource allocation mechanism. Four aspects of this issue were investigated. First, resource allocation in VWM consolidation was investigated for different materials, and it was determined whether VWM resources were allocated in a serial manner for orientation materials but in a limi…

Derivaatan ymmärtämiseen tähtäävä oppiminen ja opetus
2018
Useissa ilmiöissä jokin suure riippuu toisesta suureesta. Esimerkiksi ilman lämpötila muuttuu ajan suhteen. Jonain hetkenä lämpötila muuttuu nopeasti ja jonain hetkenä hitaasti. Tällaisia tilanteita voidaan tarkastella muutosnopeuden eli derivaatan avulla. Muutosnopeus voidaan havaita erilaisista esitysmuodoista kuten kuvaajista, taulukoista tai funktioiden lausekkeista. Suureiden välisiä riippuvuuksia on tarkoitus harjaantua tarkastelemaan funktion avulla alakoulusta lähtien. Lukiossa tarkastelua syvennetään tutkimalla funktion arvojen muutosnopeutta eli derivaattaa. Yhtenä mahdollisuutena on edetä muutosnopeuden havaitsemisesta keskimääräisen muutosnopeuden laskemiseen ja hetkellisen muut…
ProKoulu-malli näkyy työrauhan kehittymisenä ja hyvinvointina Varkauden kouluissa
2018
Varkauden kaupungin sivistystoimen ja Itä-Suomen yliopiston yhteistyö alkoi kolmiportaisen tuen verkostohankkeessa (ISKE). Hankkeen loputtua Varkaudessa oltiin halukkaita jatkamaan tutkimukseen perustuvan toimintamallin kehittämistä, aluksi kolmen koulun pilottikokeilulla.
Hyvä johtajuus ammatillisen toimijuuden tukijana IT-alan organisaatioissa
2018
Rotational excitation of the Hoyle state in 12C
2018
12C is synthesised in stars by fusion of three α particles. This process occurs through a resonance in the 12C nucleus, famously known as the Hoyle state. In this state, the 12C nucleus exists as a cluster of α particles. The state is the band-head for a rotational band with the 2+ rotational excitation predicted in the energy region 9 - 11 MeV. This rotational excitation can affect the triple-α process reaction rate by more than an order of magnitude at high temperatures (109 K). Depending on the energy of the resonance, the knowledge of the state can also help determine the structure of the Hoyle state. In the work presented here, the state of interest is populated by beta decay of radioa…
