Social support and resilience to foster prosocial behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic confinement: an explanatory model (Apoyo social y resilienc…

2021

The containment measures taken because of the COVID-19 pandemic have had consequences on human thought and behaviour. The purpose of this study is to contrast an explanatory model of prosocial behaviours during confinement by analysing different variables involved. The study sample was made up of 946 participants (70.9% female) and had an average age of 35.25 (SD = 13.98). Participants completed a series of online questionnaires. The results show that social support is a predictor of prosocial behaviours and resilience is a mediator in this relationship;living with others is a protective factor for social support;not working during confinement is a predictor for prosocial behaviours;and bei…

‘I’ll always have black hair’ – challenging raciolinguistic ideologies in Finnish schools

2021

This article discusses raciolinguistic ideologies in the Finnish educational context. Ethnographic interviews and observational data gathered during 2015–2020 from two young males who came to Finland from the Middle-East in autumn 2015 as unaccompanied minors were analysed applying the small stories approach. The research questions were: 1) What kinds of racializing discourses are circulated, negotiated, and resisted in the participants’ self- and other positionings? 2) How is valuation of their language and literacy skills and participation in education reflected in these positionings? Critical linguistic ethnography was used to identify the racializing discourses. The results indicate tha…

Effect of simulated brushing on surface roughness and wear of bis-acryl-based materials submitted to different polishing protocols

2021

Provisional materials must have enough strength to withstand masticatory loads without suffering deformation or fracture, and their surfaces must have good finishing and polishing characteristics to reduce biofilm accumulation. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the best polishing protocol for different bis-acryl composite resins in comparison with a conventional resin composite and a self-curing acrylic resin aiming to obtain a smooth restoration surface and resistance to wear. One hundred and four samples (15 mm length x 5 mm width x 4 mm depth) were prepared and divided into four groups according to the material tested: Protemp 4 and Structur 3 bis-acryl composite resins, …

Adoption of digital innovations in rural enterprises during COVID-19

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly affected the operating conditions of enterprises. Traditional customers and operational models are changing radically in the short term. Digitalisation and digital methods provide an opportunity to re-organise working methods and create a new kind of business to replace old methods and business models. Compared to urban enterprises, rural enterprises have less experience with digital tools and are less likely to adopt digital innovations. This makes rural enterprises especially vulnerable. The purpose of this study is to provide insights into how micro-enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises in rural areas have addressed the COVID-19 pandemic, th…

The role of PMCT for the assessment of the cause of death in natural disaster (landslide and flood): a Sicilian experience

2021

AbstractIn this report, the authors provide a contribution of PMCT in assessing the cause of death due to natural disasters. Here, the PMCT findings of 43 subjects who died during both landslide and flood were described. The post-mortem imaging revealed, clearly, traumatic injuries and/or the presence of foreign material in airways allowing to assess the cause of death of each subject, together with external inspection and the collected circumstantial data. Particularly, the PMCT has been helpful for characterization and localization of the clogging substance in airways providing findings on bronchial branches involvement. Moreover, the investigation offered detailed data on skeletal injuri…

MODERATE DEVIATION PRINCIPLES FOR KERNEL ESTIMATOR OF INVARIANT DENSITY IN BIFURCATING MARKOV CHAINS MODELS

2021

Bitseki and Delmas (2021) have studied recently the central limit theorem for kernel estimator of invariant density in bifurcating Markov chains models. We complete their work by proving a moderate deviation principle for this estimator. Unlike the work of Bitseki and Gorgui (2021), it is interesting to see that the distinction of the two regimes disappears and that we are able to get moderate deviation principle for large values of the ergodic rate. It is also interesting and surprising to see that for moderate deviation principle, the ergodic rate begins to have an impact on the choice of the bandwidth for values smaller than in the context of central limit theorem studied by Bitseki and …

Novel Polymorph of GaSe

2021

2D GaSe is a semiconductor belonging to the group of post-transition metal chalcogenides with great potential for advanced optoelectronic applications. The weak interlayer interaction in multilayer 2D materials allows the formation of several polymorphs. Here, the first structural observation of a new GaSe polymorph is reported, characterized by a distinct atomic configuration with a centrosymmetric monolayer (D-3d point group). The atomic structure of this new GaSe polymorph is determined by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Density-functional theory calculations verify the structural stability of this polymorph. Furthermore, the band structure and Raman inten…

Fibula response to disuse : a longitudinal analysis in people with spinal cord injury

2021

Abstract Summary Fibular response to disuse has been described in cross-sectional but not longitudinal studies. This study assessed fibular bone changes in people with spinal cord injury. Fibular bone loss was less than in the tibia and was not correlated together. This might explain low fibular fracture incidents in these patients. Purpose Cross-sectional studies suggest that the fibula responds differently to loading and disuse compared to the tibia. Whilst tibial bone changes following spinal cord injury (SCI) have been established in longitudinal studies, fibular changes remain unexplored. Methods Fibular and tibial bone parameters were assessed in 13 individuals with SCI (aged 16–76 ye…

Spectral analysis of the low-mass X-ray pulsar 4U 1822-371: Reflection component in a high-inclination system

2021

Context. The X-ray source 4U 1822-371 is an eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary and X-ray pulsar, hosting a NS that shows periodic pulsations in the X-ray band with a period of 0.59 s. The inclination angle of the system is so high (80–85°) that in principle, it should be hard to observe both the direct thermal emission of the central object and the reflection component of the spectrum because they are hidden by the outer edge of the accretion disc. Despite the number of studies carried out on this source, many aspects such as the geometry of the system, its luminosity, and its spectral features are still debated. Aims. Assuming that the source accretes at the Eddington limit, the analysis perf…

Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and their remnants: metabolic insights, role in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and emerging therapeutic strat…

2021

Abstract Recent advances in human genetics, together with a large body of epidemiologic, preclinical, and clinical trial results, provide strong support for a causal association between triglycerides (TG), TG-rich lipoproteins (TRL), and TRL remnants, and increased risk of myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke, and aortic valve stenosis. These data also indicate that TRL and their remnants may contribute significantly to residual cardiovascular risk in patients on optimized low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-lowering therapy. This statement critically appraises current understanding of the structure, function, and metabolism of TRL, and their pathophysiological role in atherosclerotic cardiova…

Acetylcholine receptors (muscarinic) in GtoPdb v.2021.3

2021

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) (nomenclature as agreed by the NC-IUPHAR Subcommittee on Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptors [50]) are activated by the endogenous agonist acetylcholine. All five (M1-M5) mAChRs are ubiquitously expressed in the human body and are therefore attractive targets for many disorders. Functionally, M1, M3, and M5 mAChRs preferentially couple to Gq/11 proteins, whilst M2 and M4 mAChRs predominantly couple to Gi/o proteins. Both agonists and antagonists of mAChRs are clinically approved drugs, including pilocarpine for the treatment of elevated intra-ocular pressure and glaucoma, and atropine for the treatment of bradycardia and poisoning by muscarinic age…

A Biocompatible Aspartic-Decorated Metal–Organic Framework with Tubular Motif Degradable under Physiological Conditions

2021

Achieving a precise control of the final structure of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is necessary to obtain desired physical properties. Here, we describe how the use of a metalloligand design strategy and a judicious choice of ligands inspired from nature is a versatile approach to succeed in this challenging task. We report a new porous chiral MOF, with the formula Ca5II{CuII10[(S,S)-aspartamox]5}·160H2O (1), constructed from Cu2+ and Ca2+ ions and aspartic acid-decorated ligands, where biometal Cu2+ ions are bridged by the carboxylate groups of aspartic acid moieties. The structure of MOF 1 reveals an infinite network of basket-like cages, built by 10 crystallographically distinct Cu(II…

Trapped? Exploring the lives of young women in France and England who are labelled NEET and economically inactive

2021

International audience; Through a comparison of France and the UK, this paper analyses the position of young women who are defined as not in education, employment or training (NEET) and economically inactive (EI). Little is known about the NEET EI group and how this status shapes young people’s lives during school-to-work transition. Consequently, the NEET EI group remains a ‘hidden’ problem in many countries and impacts to a much greater extent on young women, due to their propensity to assume caring responsibilities. Despite France and the UK having very different types of policy intervention and welfare support, there are similarities between them in terms of NEET EI populations and the …

High rates of short-term dynamics of forest ecosystem services

2021

Currently, the main tools for assessing and managing ecosystem services at large scales are maps providing snapshots of their potential supply. However, many ecosystems change over short timescales; thus, such maps soon become inaccurate. Here we show high rates of short-term dynamics of three key forest ecosystem services: wood production, bilberry production and topsoil carbon storage. Almost 85% of the coldspots and 65% of the hotspots for these services had changed into a different state over a ten-year period. Wood production showed higher rates of short-term dynamics than bilberry production and carbon storage. The high rates of dynamics mean that static snapshot ecosystem service map…

The rise and the fall of a Pseudomonas aeruginosa endemic lineage in a hospital

2021

The biological features that allow a pathogen to survive in the hospital environment are mostly unknown. The extinction of bacterial epidemics in hospitals is mostly attributed to changes in medical practice, including infection control, but the role of bacterial adaptation has never been documented. We analysed a collection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates belonging to the Besançon Epidemic Strain (BES), responsible for a 12year nosocomial outbreak, using a genotype-to-phenotype approach. Bayesian analysis estimated the emergence of the clone in the hospital 5 years before its opening, during the creation of its water distribution network made of copper. BES survived better than the refe…

Association of extent of cannabis use and psychotic like intoxication experiences in a multi-national sample of first episode psychosis patients and …

2021

AbstractBackgroundFirst episode psychosis (FEP) patients who use cannabis experience more frequent psychotic and euphoric intoxication experiences compared to controls. It is not clear whether this is consequent to patients being more vulnerable to the effects of cannabis use or to their heavier pattern of use. We aimed to determine whether extent of use predicted psychotic-like and euphoric intoxication experiences in patients and controls and whether this differs between groups.MethodsWe analysed data on patients who had ever used cannabis (n = 655) and controls who had ever used cannabis (n = 654) across 15 sites from six countries in the EU-GEI study (2010–2015). The effect of trivalent framework heteroatoms in Cu-CHA on the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO

2021

Abstract The effect of the trivalent framework atoms (Si4+/M3+ = 13-105) in Cu exchanged CHA-type zeolites was investigated for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3. While the increased hydrophobicity of B-CHA compared to Al-CHA could make it a good candidate for low temperature SCR, the material was too unstable under reaction conditions and the exchanged Cu2+ did not remain isolated. Consequently a lower activity and selectivity than for Al-CHA were observed. Ga-CHA on the other hand showed a similar Cu2+ speciation as Al-CHA at similar Si4+/M3+ ratios. The difference in catalytic activity was remarkably small. While Ga-CHA was less stable upon hydrothermal aging, this was mar…

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath as a marker of hypoxia in multiple chemical sensitivity

2021

Abstract In the history of diagnostics, breath analysis was one of the first method used until the breakthrough of biochemical testing technology. Today, breath analysis has made a comeback with the development of gas analyzers and e‐noses, demonstrating its power in its applicability for diagnosing a wide range of diseases. The physical basis of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), an emerging environmental disease, is difficult to understand because it is based on the scenario of chronic hypoxia, with a complex of chemical compounds that trigger the syndrome and result in multiple symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate MCS by analyzing exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs)…

Saada kaikki ja olla onnellinen : äitiyrittäjyys tuottavuuden ja affektien aikakaudella

2021

Artikkelissa tutkin uusliberaalin postfeminismin kehyksen läpi työntekijyyden ja äitiyden ristiriitaisuuksia ja ratkaisuyrityksiä. Empiirisenä kohteena on äitiyrittäjyysilmiö.

Collaboration network for inspiring children and youth into science, mathematics and technology in Finland

2021

The importance of STEM education is widely recognized. Despite the value of the sector and good associated employment prospects, young students generally lack interest in science and engineering. This is reflected in the difficulty universities experience in recruiting qualified students for STEM subjects, which in turn is reflected in business life and is a factor slowing down countries’ economic development. In Finland, efforts have been made to solve this challenge by launching the LUMA Centre Finland network, which consists of 13 university-related centres promoting STEM issues throughout Finland. This paper describes the network and its objectives, with a special focus on the activitie…

Melatonin and phytomelatonin: Chemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, distribution and bioactivity in plants and animals—an overview

2021

Melatonin is a ubiquitous indolamine, largely investigated for its key role in the regulation of several physiological processes in both animals and plants. In the last century, it was reported that this molecule may be produced in high concentrations by several species belonging to the plant kingdom and stored in specialized tissues. In this review, the main information related to the chemistry of melatonin and its metabolism has been summarized. Furthermore, the biosynthetic pathway characteristics of animal and plant cells have been compared, and the main differences between the two systems highlighted. Additionally, in order to investigate the distribution of this indolamine in the plan…

Obesity and Mental Health: A Longitudinal, Cross-Cultural Examination in Germany and China

2021

The present study examines the relationship between obesity and mental health using longitudinal data. Participants with data at baseline and one-year follow-up were included from two countries: Germany (364) and China (9007). A series of structural equation models with three mediators and one moderator were conducted separately for female and male students in Germany and China. Zero-order correlations indicated that overweight/obesity was significantly related to later depression and anxiety in Chinese males. Additional effects of obesity on later mental health flowed through effects on attractiveness (Chinese and German females, and Chinese males), physical health (Chinese males), and lif…

Prassi della scrittura

2021
