BIODIVERSITA’ DELLE COMUNITA’ BATTERICHE IN UN SUOLO SOTTOPOSTO A BIORISANAMENTO IN MICROCOSMO

2021

2021

The pricing capability lifecycle of digital innovations

2021

The pricing capability provides a basis for firms’ competitive advantage. However, to date, the literature has not investigated how this capability forms, develops, and matures. In this study, we define the pricing capability as a dynamic capability consisting of three operational building blocks (tools and data, human and relational resources, and processes, routines, and mechanisms) as well as two dynamic capability building blocks (alertness and responsiveness, and value-based strategic thinking). Furthermore, we propose the pricing capability lifecycle of digital innovations that incorporates insights of the dynamic capabilities view (DCV). Based on a longitudinal multi-case study of fi…

Analysis of different geometrical features to achieve close-to-bone stiffness material properties in medical device: A feasibility numerical study

2021

Background and objective: In orthopedic medical devices, elasto-plastic behavior differences between bone and metallic materials could lead to mechanical issues at the bone-implant interface, as stress shielding. Those issue are mainly related to knee and hip arthroplasty, and they could be responsible for implant failure. To reduce mismatching-related adverse events between bone and prosthesis mechanical properties, modifying the implant's internal geometry varying the bulk stiffness and density could be the right approach. Therefore, this feasibility study aims to assess which in-body gap geometry improves, by reducing, the bulk stiffness. Methods: Using five finite element models, a unia…

An Algorithm for Optimal Sizing of BESS in Smart Islands Energy Communities: the Case of Pantelleria

2021

Energy Communities (EC) are a promising solution to reduce both the carbon footprint and the impact of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) on the distribution grid. Based on a simple energy sharing principle, EC can be decisive in the next future energy transition of some problematic territories, like small islands not supplied by the main power grid. By integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), it is possible to improve the EC performance. However, due to the still high BESSs unit prices, the goal of this work is to find the optimal size of BESSs, under various conditions, which combines the need to maximize shared energy and the possible revenue of EC actors. To set this multi-objecti…

Radiative Seesaw Dark Matter

2021

The singlet majoron model of seesaw neutrino mass is appended by one dark Majorana fermion singlet $\chi$ with $L=2$ and one dark complex scalar singlet $\zeta$ with $L=1$. This simple setup allows $\chi$ to obtain a small radiative mass anchored by the same heavy right-handed neutrinos, whereas the one-loop decay of the standard-model Higgs boson to $\chi \chi + \bar{\chi} \bar{\chi}$ provides the freeze-in mechanism for $\chi$ to be the light dark matter of the Universe.

Modeling and Performance Assessment of the Split-Pi Used as a Storage Converter in All the Possible DC Microgrid Scenarios. Part II: Simulation and E…

2021

Bidirectional DC/DC converters such as the Split-pi can be used to integrate an energy storage system (ESS) into a DC microgrid providing manifold benefits. However, this integration deserves careful design because the ESS converter must behave like a stiff voltage generator, a non-stiff voltage generator, or a current generator depending on the microgrid configuration. Part I of this work presented a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the Split-pi used as an ESS converter in all the possible DC microgrid scenarios. Five typical microgrid scenarios were identified. Each of them required a specific state-space model of the Split-pi and a suitable control scheme. The present paper complete…

Automatic detection of thermal anomalies in induction motors

2021

The paper proposes a methodology based on Artificial Intelligence techniques for the automatic detection of abnormal thermal distributions in electric motors, to rapidly identify pre-faults or fault conditions. The proposed approach, applied to induction motors of different sizes, installed in waterworks plants, is based on the execution of Thermographic Non-Destructive Tests, which allow identifying abnormal operating conditions without interrupting the ordinary working conditions of the system. Thermographic images of induction motors are acquired at the installation site and with perspectives visible to the operator, which are sometimes partially obstructed. These thermographic images ar…

Eccentric fixation measurements using visuoscopy and Macula Integrity Tester (MIT) in children with amblyopia

2021

The aim of the work was to compare measurements of eccentric fixation in children with amblyopia using two different methods, a traditional visuoscopy and MIT. Monocular fixation was evaluated using visuoscopy and MIT in 16 patients (from 5 to 9 years old). Measurements were started with the better seeing eye to compare the results obtained with the amblyopic eye. All study participants were selected with anisometropic and refractive amblyopia. Visuoscopy is simpler than MIT and less dependent on patient responses, so visioscopy can be used for young children who have not yet acquired verbal skills. Children over the age of 5 can more easily understand the MIT method and get more reliable r…

Tracing battery usage for second life market with a blockchain-based framework

2021

This work describes the design of a platform based on a permissioned blockchain for sharing relevant information among the actors involved in grid service provision programs. The information collected by a proprietary monitoring on-board system accessing the central unit of the Electric Vehicle, EV, is then sent to a dropbox folder owned by the car owner and then written on a blockchain platform. The platform could be supplied from similar data from the grid operator collected on the grid during the provision of services. In this way data can be validated and used for tracing the health status of the EV's battery. The design of customized smart contract allows to acquire the profiles of bat…

The Effect of Building Direction on Microstructure and Microhardness during Selective Laser Melting of Ti6Al4V Titanium Alloy

2021

AbstractDuring the last few years, additive manufacturing has been more and more extensively used in several industries, especially in the aerospace and medical device fields, to produce Ti6Al4V titanium alloy parts. During the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process, the heterogeneity of finished product is strictly connected to the scan strategies and the building direction. An optimal managing of the latter parameters allows to better control and defines the final mechanical and metallurgical properties of parts. Acting on the building direction it is also possible to optimize the critical support structure. In particular, more support structures are needed for the sample at 0°, while very…

Distributed Symbolic Network Quality Assessment for Resource-constrained Devices

2021

After a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is deployed it is subject to significant variations of the quality of its radio links during its lifetime. Knowledge of the condition of the wireless links can be useful to optimize power consumption and increase the reliability of the network. However, resource-constrained nodes may not be able to spare the storage space for network monitoring code. Also, reprogramming deployed nodes can be costly or unfeasible. In this work, we show how an approach based on the exchange of symbolic executable code among nodes enables the assessment of the network status in terms of Packet Reception Rate (PRR) with no extra storage requirements on deployed networks. We…

Repositioning teachers as assessors : Compromised aspirations and contested agency

2021

The global trend to emphasise assessment for learning brings up the issue of repositioning teachers in assessment. The contemporary curricular policy reforms encourage teachers to take an agentic role in assessment, but multiple dimensions of the environment affect its realisation. Drawing on an ecological approach to teacher agency, this empirical study investigated how Korean secondary English teachers (KSETs) perceive and enact their own teacher agency in assessment within the ecosystem of Korean education. The dataset for the study comprises semi-structured interviews with 15 KSETs. The interview questions involved the main themes such as personal experiences over the life course regard…

On the origin of controlled anisotropic growth of monodisperse gold nanobipyramids

2021

We elucidate the crucial role of the cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant in the anisotropic growth mechanism of gold nano-bipyramids, nano-objects with remarkable optical properties and high tunability. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations predict different surface coverages of the CTAB (positively charged) heads and their (bromide) counterions as function of the gold exposed surfaces. High concentration of CTAB surfactant promotes formation of gold nanograins in solution that work as precursors for the smooth anisotropic growth of more elongated nano-bipyramidal objects. Nanobipyramids feature higher index facets with respect to nanorods, allowing higher CTAB coverages th…

Odorant binding changes the electrical properties of olfactory receptors at the nanoscale

2021

Olfactory receptors (ORs) comprise the largest multigene family in the vertebrates. They belong to the class A (rhodopsin-like) family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are the most abundant membrane proteins, having widespread, significant roles in signal transduction in cells, and therefore, they are a major pharmacological target. Moreover, ORs displayed high selectivity and sensitivity towards odorant detection, a characteristic that raised the interest for developing biohybrid sensors based on ORs for the detection of volatile compounds. The transduction of odorant binding into cellular signaling by ORs is not well understood and knowing its mechanism would enable developin…

The impact of a short auditory training on L2 pronunciation in languages with different orthographic depth

2021

It is sometimes assumed that the pronunciation of an L2 is more predictable and thus easier to learn if its orthography is transparent. This study aims to find out whether this assumption holds true in the first stages of L2 learning in languages with different orthographic depth. The study also examines the effect that a short auditory training (supported by simultaneous orthographic input) has on L2 pronunciation. A central finding was that the pronunciation of an L2 with a transparent orthography was not easier to learn for a naïve learner when compared to an L2 with an opaque orthography. A second finding was that even a short period of auditory training can introduce a significant impr…
