Carbon and nitrogen isotopic values in Lithops aucampiae during leaf development.
2021
Abstract Lithops (Aizoaceae) are succulent plants consisting of a pair of opposite succulent leaves inserted on an extremely short stem. The apical meristem produces a new leaf pair that develops between the older pair, recycling water and metabolites. This peculiar anatomy and growth form make ecophysiological studies quite challenging. Lithops are considered to have CAM metabolism, though experimental evidence is scarce. We followed the changes in carbon and nitrogen isotopic values in mature leaves, young leaves and roots, with the aim of investigating how the use of resources is optimized to achieve survival in extremely arid environments. Two-year-old plants of Lithops aucampiae were g…

Near band edge and defect emissions in wurtzite Cd0.025Mg0.10Zn0.875O nanocrystals
2021
Abstract We report on near band edge and local defects emissions in Cd0·025Mg0·10Zn0·875O (CdMgZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) as a function of temperature, where a strong temperature-dependent near-infrared emission around 1.7 eV (~730 nm) has been observed. The NPs were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method and were annealed at 750 °C after growing. The crystallographic parameters have been determined by 2-dimensional synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) and conventional XRD analysis, confirming their growth within the wurtzite phase with a preferred orientation along the (101) plane and an apparent crystallite size of 52.72 ± 0.18 nm. This apparent crystallite size is consistent with the near…

The Social Exclusion Bench Tool (SEBT): A visual way of assessing interpersonal social exclusion
2021
People usually prefer to appear with an inclusive and positive attitude to others’ eyes. For this reason, the self-report scales assessing social exclusion intentions are often biased by social desirability. In this work, we present an innovative graphical tool, named Social Exclusion Bench Tool (SEBT), for assessing social exclusion not influenced by social desirability. The tool is based on the consistency between social distance and physical distance evaluation. The results showed that in two samples of adults from Italy (N = 252) and the UK (N = 254), the SEBT positively correlated with self-report measures of social exclusion, but not with the social desirability measure. The tool has …

Do colour morphs of wall lizards express different personalities?
2021
Abstract Colour morphs sometimes have different behavioural strategies which may be maintained by frequency or density dependence mechanisms. We investigated temporal changes in behavioural reaction to a novel environment among colour morphs (yellow, orange, white) of the European wall lizard (Podarcis muralis). Adult males were given two 15 min experimental trials, and their locomotion was highly consistent between the two trials. Boldness, freezing and escape behaviour were less repeatable. Colour morphs differed in their locomotion and freezing behaviour. Boldness was similar among the morphs, whereas escape behaviour was lowest in yellow morph. Consequently, yellow morph males tended to…

The Role of Fc Receptors on the Effectiveness of Therapeutic Monoclonal Antibodies.
2021
Since the approval of the first monoclonal antibody (mAb) in 1986, a huge effort has been made to guarantee safety and efficacy of therapeutic mAbs. As of July 2021, 118 mAbs are approved for the European market for a broad range of clinical indications. In order to ensure clinical efficacy and safety aspects, (pre-)clinical experimental approaches evaluate the respective modes of action (MoA). In addition to antigen-specificity including binding affinity and -avidity, MoA comprise Fc-mediated effector functions such as antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and the closely related antibody dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP). For this reason, a variety of cell-based assays have…
Optimization of urban delivery systems based on electric assisted cargo bikes with modular battery size, taking into account the service requirements…
2021
The implementation of new forms of urban mobility is a fundamental challenge for improving the performance of city logistic systems in terms of efficiency and sustainability. For such purposes, the exploitation of electric vehicles is currently being investigated as an alternative to traditional internal combustion engines. In particular, the employment of lightweight electric cargo bikes is seen as an attractive possibility for designing improved city distribution systems. Such vehicles, however, present substantial limitations related to their endurance, speed, power, and recharging times; therefore, their configuration must be optimized considering the actual operational context and the …

Using descriptive statistics and thematic content analysis, we explore selected characteristics of the peer-reviewed scholarship, including most commonly used concepts, methods and topics, geographical and co-authorship patterns, critical readings of key processes of neoliberalization, including commodification, privatization, dispossession, governance rescaling, governmentalities, and its engagement…
Concurrent TMS-fMRI for causal network perturbation and proof of target engagement
2021
The experimental manipulation of neural activity by neurostimulation techniques overcomes the inherent limitations of correlative recordings, enabling the researcher to investigate causal brain-behavior relationships. But only when stimulation and recordings are combined, the direct impact of the stimulation on neural activity can be evaluated. In humans, this can be achieved non-invasively through the concurrent combination of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Concurrent TMS-fMRI allows the assessment of the neurovascular responses evoked by TMS with excellent spatial resolution and full-brain coverage. This enables the functional ma…
Epigenetic Alterations Upstream and Downstream of p53 Signaling in Colorectal Carcinoma
2021
Simple Summary Colorectal cancer (CRC) belongs to the most common cancer types. It is well known that half of all CRC possess missense mutations in the TP53 tumor suppressor gene. However, the entire signaling cascade upstream and downstream of the p53 protein may also contribute to CRC development, if relevant players in this signaling cascade lost their function. Besides p53 loss-of-function by mutations, epigenetic changes (DNA methylation, post translational modifications of histones, micro-RNAs) play a vital role in CRC development. In the present review, we concentrated on the epigenetic modifications related to the entire p53 signal transduction cascade upstream and downstream of p53…

Disparate movement behavior and feeding ecology in sympatric ecotypes of Atlantic cod
2021
Abstract Coexistence of ecotypes, genetically divergent population units, is a widespread phenomenon, potentially affecting ecosystem functioning and local food web stability. In coastal Skagerrak, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) occur as two such coexisting ecotypes. We applied a combination of acoustic telemetry, genotyping, and stable isotope analysis to 72 individuals to investigate movement ecology and food niche of putative local “Fjord” and putative oceanic “North Sea” ecotypes—thus named based on previous molecular studies. Genotyping and individual origin assignment suggested 41 individuals were Fjord and 31 were North Sea ecotypes. Both ecotypes were found throughout the fjord. Seven …

Higher glucose availability augments the metabolic responses of the C2C12 myotubes to exercise-like electrical pulse stimulation
2021
The application of exercise-like electrical pulse simulation (EL-EPS) has become a widely used exercise mimetic in vitro. EL-EPS produces similar physiological responses as in vivo exercise, while less is known about the detailed metabolic effects. Routinely, the C2C12 myotubes are cultured in high-glucose medium (4.5 g/L), which may alter EL-EPS responses. In this study, we evaluate the metabolic effects of EL-EPS under the high- and low-glucose (1.0 g/L) conditions to understand how substrate availability affects the myotube response to EL-EPS. The C2C12 myotube, media, and cell-free media metabolites were analyzed using untargeted nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics. Furt…

However, scientists continue to strive to create enhanced technology while continually developing nanomaterial-enabled biosensing methods that can provide new methodologies, potentially fulfilling the present demand for rapid and early identification of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Our review presents a summar…
Analysis of hybrid vehicle transmissions with any number of modes and planetary gearing: kinematics, power flows, mechanical power losses
2021
Abstract This paper is focused on upgrading a unified parametric model, available in the literature, that can perform both the analysis and the design of Power-Split Continuously Variable Transmissions (PS-CVTs), which are particularly promising to deploy in the hybrid electric powertrain. In particular, this work is focused on the analysis of PS-CVTs and proposes a new matrix approach for identifying the basic functional parameters underlying the model from the constructive layout of the transmission. This new method does not rely on a case-specific formulation, thus befits any power-split transmission, regardless of the number of planetary and ordinary gear sets and their constructive arr…
Application of deep convolutional neural networks for the detection of anthracnose in olives using VIS/NIR hyperspectral images
2021
Abstract Anthracnose is one of the primary diseases that affect olive production before and after harvest, causing severe damage and economic losses. The objective of this work is to detect this disease in the early stages, using hyperspectral images and advanced modelling techniques of Deep Learning (DL) and convolutional neural networks (CNN). The olives were artificially inoculated with the fungus. Hyperspectral images (450–1050 nm) of each olive were acquired until visual symptoms of the disease were observed, in some cases up to 9 days. The olives were classified into two classes: control, inoculated with water, and fungi composed of olives inoculated with the fungus. The ResNet101 arc…

Authentication of berries and berry-based food products.
2021
Abstract Berries represent one of the most important and high-valued group of modern-day health-beneficial “superfoods” whose dietary consumption has been recognized to be beneficial for human health for a long time. In addition to being delicious, berries are rich in nutrients, vitamins, and several bioactive compounds, including carotenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and hydrolysable tannins. However, due to their high value, berries and berry-based products are often subject to fraudulent adulteration, commonly for economical gain, but also unintentionally due to misidentification of species. Deliberate adulteration often comprises the substitution of high-value berries with lower valu…

One year into the pandemic: Short-term evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and emergence of new lineages.
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic was officially declared on March 11th, 2020. Since the very beginning, the spread of the virus has been tracked nearly in real-time by worldwide genome sequencing efforts. As of March 2021, more than 830,000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes have been uploaded in GISAID and this wealth of data allowed researchers to study the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 during this first pandemic year. In parallel, nomenclatures systems, often with poor consistency among each other, have been developed to designate emerging viral lineages. Despite general fears that the virus might mutate to become more virulent or transmissible, SARS-CoV-2 genetic diversity has remained relatively low during the first ~…

Anharmonic Vibrational Spectrum and Experimental Matrix Isolation Study of Thioformic Acid Conformers -- Potential Candidates for Molecular Cloud and…
2021
Thioformic acid (TFA) is the sulfur analog of formic acid, the simplest organic acid. It has three analogues HCOSH, HCSOH, and HCSSH, each of them having two rotational isomeric (rotameric) forms: trans and cis where the trans form is energetically more stable. In this article, we study computational energetics and anharmonic vibrational spectrum of TFA including overtone and combination vibrations. We also studied experimental photoisomerization and photodecomposition channels of HCOSH molecules with different wavelengths. We suggest that TFA is a potential sulfur containing candidate molecule for interstellar and planetary observations and discuss these in a light of different radiation e…
