ALCUNE CONSIDERAZIONI SULL’ARCHITETTURA CIVILE A SIRACUSA E NEGLI IBLEI FRA XV E XVI SECOLO
2021
The few buildings that survived the 1693 earthquake, concentrated mainly in the city of Syracuse, offer a fragmentary picture of late Gothic civil architecture in south-eastern Sicily. The analysis of the detail elements such as windows and doorawys in the facades, stairways and loggias inside the courtyards, marked by the coexistence of late Gothic and Renaissance architectural languages, highlights the adoption of decorative motifs widespread throughout Sicily and the Mediterranean context. However, many original solutions emerge, such as the square mullioned window, largely common in the city of Syracuse but also present in Scicli, probably very common in the urban landscape of the hybla…
Tra mito e modello. Le cattedrali normanne nell'architettura religiosa del Cinquecento in Italia meridionale
2021
Chiese colonnari e tiranti metallici (Palermo XVI-XVII secolo)
2014
The churches with aisles of arches and columns are an archetype of Sicilian architecture. From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, the preference for this plan resulted in experiments, evolutions and tests concerned with the science of building in a land exposed to the danger of earthquakes. Contrary to the recommendations dispensed and disseminated by the most authoritative treatises, the cases presented illustrate how metal tie-rods were used at construction sites in Palermo during the Modern Age when building these constructions. These elements were able to counter the thrust generated by the arches and vaults or caused by earthquakes on slender and isolated vertical structures like col…
Construction Guilds in Southern Italy and the Islands (15th-16th Centuries): Leadership and Rivalries
2020
In the South of Italy and the big islands, in counter-trend with respect to the rest of the peninsula, construction guilds know a renewed vitality between the last decades of 15th and the beginning of 16th centuries. Rules, prerogatives and operative modes are regulated by statutes, often undersigned by the masters included in the trade organization, mentioning also the other actors involved in the approval processes. The intertwining of these and other archival documents sometimes reveals the leading role played within the guild by masters that overcome the anonymity usually considered to be inherent in the corporate system. Comparing the rules and the boundaries among specific trades esta…

The castle's Hermitage of Yecla (Region of Murcia) constituted during the 13th to 16th centuries the first parish of the population, hosting a triptych-shaped altarpiece presided over by a tempera painting on wood of Our Lady of Humility or "Virgo Lactans", dated around 1370 and attributed to the painter Barnaba da Modena, which was the titular image of the mentioned temple under the title of Our Lady of the Incarnation, until at the end of the 18th century it changed ownership for the Conception of Our Lady. The table at averages of the eight hundred was placed in an a loft, appropriating it at the beginning of the 20th century by the retired military Pascual Spuche y Lacy, who sold it aro…
Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry characterization of historical varnishes of ancient Italian lutes and violin
2007
The organic constituents of historical vanishes from two ancient Italian lutes and a Stradivari violin, kept in the Musée de la musique in Paris, have been characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results have been compared with the chromatograms and mass spectra of recent as well as old naturally aged reference materials. The three historical varnishes analyzed have been shown to be oil varnishes, probably mixtures of linseed oil with resins. Identification of diterpenoids and triterpenoids compounds, and of the resins that may have been ingredients of the varnishes, are discussed in this paper.

The short die young: the interrelationship between stature and longevity-evidence from skeletal remains.
2005
It has long been observed that tall people display longer life spans. The current data were employed to verify this association within the bioarchaeological context. To this end, stature and its association with age-at-death were analyzed in a pooled sample of 2,923 skeletons. Height was estimated from proxy indicators based on the maximum length of the humerus, radius, femur, and tibia. Stature estimation followed the procedure outlined by Pearson ([1899] Philos. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. [A] 192:169-244), incorporating minor modifications by Rosing ([ 1988] Handbuch der vergleichenden Biologie des Menschen; Stuttgart: Gustave Fischer, p 586-600). Individual age estimates were classified into t…
