Structure and composition of sputter-deposited nickel-tungsten oxide films
2011
Films of mixed nickel-tungsten oxide, denoted NixW1-x oxide, were prepared by reactive DC magnetron co-sputtering from metallic targets and were characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry and Raman spectroscopy. A consistent picture of the structure and composition emerged, and at x<0.50 the films comprised a mixture of amorphous WO3 and nanosized NiWO4, at x = 0.50 the nanosized NiWO4 phase was dominating, and at x>0.50 the films contained nanosized NiO and NiWO4.
Local Structure of Supported Keggin and Wells-Dawson Heteropolyacids and Its Influence on the Catalytic Activity
2019
[EN] Keggin [PW12O40]3– and Wells–Dawson [P2W18O62]6– heteropolyanions are nanosized transition-metal-oxygen clusters belonging to the heteropolyacids (HPAs) family. They are widely used as catalysts due to their high Brønsted acidity, and their dispersion on solid supports favors the accessibility to their acid sites generally increasing the catalytic activity. A series of binary materials composed of Keggin or Wells–Dawson HPAs and SiO2, TiO2, and ZrO2 have been prepared by impregnation or solvothermal methods. Remarkable differences have been found in the catalytic activities among the unsupported and supported HPAs. These differences have been correlated in the past to the structural ch…
EBIT diagnostics using X-ray spectra of highly ionized Ne
2003
We have carried out a detailed analysis of highly ionized neon spectra collected at the NIST EBIT using an NTD germanium X-ray microcalorimeter developed at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics [Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A 444 (2000) 156]. Our attention was focused especially on the Ne IX He-like triplet to check electron density diagnostics through the intercombination/forbidden line ratio. We have investigated possible effects of the ion dynamics on the plasma emission line intensities, looking at the dependence of the count-rate and the charge state distribution on the electron beam energy and current. The temperature and spatial distribution of the neon ions, and hence the overl…
Quantitative molecular plating of large-area 242Pu targets with improved layer properties
2015
Abstract For measurements of the neutron-induced fission cross section of 242Pu, large-area (42 cm2) 242Pu targets were prepared on Ti-coated Si wafers by means of constant current density molecular plating. Radiochemical separations were performed prior to the platings. Quantitative deposition yields (>95%) were determined for all targets by means of alpha-particle spectroscopy. Layer densities in the range of 100–150 μg/cm2 were obtained. The homogeneity of the targets was studied by radiographic imaging. A comparative study between the quality of the layers produced on the Ti-coated Si wafers and the quality of layers grown on normal Ti foils was carried out by applying scanning electron…
Using photoelectron emission microscopy with hard-X-rays
2001
We present several successful test cases of using photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) for photon energy up to 25 keV. First, the full extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis was implemented in areas as small as 100 mum(2) for transition-metal K edge absorption spectra and, therefore, demonstrated the feasibility of combining structural and chemical analysis with hard-X-ray absorption spectroscopy with high lateral resolution. We also show that PEEM can be used in a transmission (radiography) mode as an imaging detector for hard-X-ray, This approach again leads to the unprecedented 0.3 mum lateral resolution, particularly critical for the use of coherence-based phase contrast …
Acoustic vibrations of metal nanoparticles: high order radial mode detection
2004
The vibrational radial modes of silver nanospheres embedded in a glass matrix are investigated using a high sensitivity femtosecond pump-probe technique. The results yield evidence for coherent launching of the fundamental and higher order radial modes in agreement with a sphere dilation mediated excitation model. The results are consistent with low-frequency Raman scattering experiments.
Relations between cavitation erosion resistance of materials and their fatigue strength under random loading
1999
Abstract The paper contains results of tests on fatigue strength under uniaxial random loading and cavitation erosion resistance for three steels: 10HNAP, 18G2A and 15G2ANb. The obtained fatigue and cavitation characteristics were used for determination of relations between these two phenomena. From the analysis it appears that there is correlation between fatigue strength of the material under random loading and its cavitation erosion resistance. It has been shown that fatigue tests under random loading and tests on cavitation erosion of 10HNAP, 18G2A and 15G2ANb steels may be described with a mathematical model of the same type. It has been also found that there is a linear relation, in t…
MOCVD deposition of YSZ on stainless steels
2003
Abstract Yttria stabilized zirconia was deposited on stainless steel using the metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique, from β-diketonate precursors. The variation of the evaporation temperatures of yttrium and zirconium precursor allowed to control the level of Y within the film. Over the temperature range 125–150 °C, the Y content increased from 2.5 to 17.6 at.%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses evidenced tetragonal phase of zirconia when the Y content was below 8 at.%, and cubic phase for higher concentration. Sputtered neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS) profiles confirmed that the control and stability of Y precursor temperature were of major importance to guarantee the …
Mechanical properties of aluminum, zirconium, hafnium and tantalum oxides and their nanolaminates grown by atomic layer deposition
2015
ABSTRACT The mechanical properties of two different metal oxide nanolaminates comprised of Ta 2 O 5 and Al 2 O 3 , HfO 2 or ZrO 2 , grown on soda–lime glass substrate by atomic layer deposition, were investigated. Ta 2 O 5 and Al 2 O 3 layers were amorphous, whereas ZrO 2 and HfO 2 possessed crystalline structure. Thickness of single oxide layers was varied between 2.5 and 15 nm. The total thickness of the laminate structures was in the range of 160–170 nm. The hardness values of single layer oxides on glass ranged from 6.7 GPa (Ta 2 O 5 ) to 9.5 GPa (Al 2 O 3 ). Corresponding elastic moduli were 96 GPa and 101 GPa. The hardnesses of laminates were in the range of 6.8–7.8 GPa and elastic mo…
Synthesis and characterization of praseodymium-containing ZrSiO4 solid solutions from gels
2011
Abstract The preparation and characterization of a series of praseodymium–zircon solid solution (Prx–ZrSiO4) materials with increasing nominal amounts of Pr is reported. Pr-doped zircon gels were prepared by gelling mixtures of zirconium n-propoxide, praseodymium acetylacetonate and tetraethylorthosilicate, and annealed over the range of temperature up to the formation of Pr–zircon solid solutions. The reaction sequence was followed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance (DR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The first crystalline phase detected on annealing gels was a tetragonal praseodymium-containing ZrO2 phase (t-Pr–ZrO2). On further annealing, the subs…
