The image of the monolingual dictionary across Europe. Results of the European Survey of Dictionary use and Culture
2019
The article presents the results of a survey on dictionary use in Europe, focusing on general monolingual dictionaries. The survey is the broadest survey of dictionary use to date, covering close to 10,000 dictionary users (and non-users) in nearly thirty countries. Our survey covers varied user groups, going beyond the students and translators who have tended to dominate such studies thus far. The survey was delivered via an online survey platform, in language versions specific to each target country. It was completed by 9,562 respondents, over 300 respondents per country on average. The survey consisted of the general section, which was translated and presented to all participants, as wel…
Metodi digitali per l'insegnamento classico e umanistico
2020

Learning Slovak in an E-Learning Environment: A case study
2014
Providing a motivating learning environment for learning a less commonly taught language is a challenge. Developing technology, societal changes, virtual mobility and networking create new demands for teachers and students of these languages. Growing needs for international mobility call for the adoption of new pedagogical approaches. It is the urgency of using more up-to-date, pedagogically acceptable computer-assisted teaching programs that led to the development of the e-learning course of Slovak reported upon in this article. The course is based on a socio-constructivist approach and its main aim is to promote the development of learners’ communicative and cultural competence. This empi…
Online Mathematics With Interactive Concept Maps
2008
There has not been a free and easy-to-use utility to handle both authoring and presentation of large graphs online, especially with mathematical content. On one hand, concept map editors are ideal for authoring graphs, but publishing capabilities may be limited. On the other hand, numerous browsing and layout tools exist for publishing content generated elsewhere. We present a transformation tool Xcm2kg that tries to solve the problem by integrating authoring with IHMC CmapTools to publishing based on TouchGraph. GXL is used as an intermediate format to facilitate interoperability with other graph-based applications. The tool is demonstrated with concept maps drawn on an undergraduate mathe…
The Hungarian Case: From Natio to the Ersatz Nation-State
2009
The Kingdom of Hungary had been part of the Habsburg realms since 1526 when the Sultan Suleyman I the Magnificent (ruled 1520–1566) defeated the Hungarian armies at Mohacs. The King of Hungary and Bohemia, Louis II (ruled 1516–1526), died in the battle. Due to the dynastic agreement between the Jagiellonians and the Habsburgs, the latter were to take over Hungary and the Czech lands should the former fail to produce male heirs. In the other case, the Jagiellonians could hope for the imperial throne in Vienna. Meanwhile, the Ottoman Empire seized most of Hungary proper, including Buda (1541), the seat of Hungarian Kings. Foreseeing this outcome, the Habsburgs had already moved the capital o…
Badania teolingwistyczne heortonimów chrześcijańskich (na przykładzie języka rosyjskiego i polskiego)
2021
Around the beginning of the twenty-first century, the study of eortonyms (names of religious holidays) became one of the actively developing areas not only of liturgics, but also of theolinguistics and onomastics. This allowed us to fill a niche in onomastic terminology. In addition, a new direction – comparative eortology began to be developed in Slavic theolinguistics. Theses on comparative Russian-Czech, Slovak-Russian and Russian-Bulgarian eortonyms have been defended date. To a far lesser extent, this problem is developed on the basis of the Russian and Polish languages. A special stratum of the religious vocabulary, which ought to pay close attention to is Christian (primarily Orthodo…
Evidence-based programming language design : a philosophical and methodological exploration
2015
Background: Programming language design is not usually informed by empirical studies. In other fields similar problems have inspired an evidence-based paradigm of practice. Such a paradigm is practically inevitable in language design, as well. Aims: The content of evidence-based programming design (EB-PLD) is explored, as is the concept of evidence in general. Additionally, the extent of evidence potentially useful for EB-PLD is mapped, and the appropriateness of Cohen’s kappa for evaluating coder agreement in a secondary study is evaluated. Method: Philosophical analysis and explication are used to clarify the unclear. A systematic mapping study was conducted to map out the existing body of…
