Electronic structure of quantum dots

2002

The properties of quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots are reviewed. Experimental techniques for measuring the electronic shell structure and the effect of magnetic fields are briefly described. The electronic structure is analyzed in terms of simple single-particle models, density-functional theory, and "exact" diagonalization methods. The spontaneous magnetization due to Hund's rule, spin-density wave states, and electron localization are addressed. As a function of the magnetic field, the electronic structure goes through several phases with qualitatively different properties. The formation of the so-called maximum-density droplet and its edge reconstruction is discussed, and…

Fractional mechanical model for the dynamics of non-local continuum

2009

In this chapter, fractional calculus has been used to account for long-range interactions between material particles. Cohesive forces have been assumed decaying with inverse power law of the absolute distance that yields, as limiting case, an ordinary, fractional differential equation. It is shown that the proposed mathematical formulation is related to a discrete, point-spring model that includes non-local interactions by non-adjacent particles with linear springs with distance-decaying stiffness. Boundary conditions associated to the model coalesce with the well-known kinematic and static constraints and they do not run into divergent behavior. Dynamic analysis has been conducted and both…

Spin polarized electron transport and partial localization of photoelectrons in highly doped photocathodes

2011

The results of experimental and theoretical studies of spin polarized electron transport in semiconductor SL used for photoemitter application are presented. The experimental study is based on the time resolved measurements of electron emission from the cathode after its photoexcitation by fs laser pulse. The response and spin relaxation times have been determined by means of measured time dependent intensity and polarization of electron emission. We also performed theoretical calculations of photocathode pulse response and compared the obtained results with experimental data. Our analysis testifies the presence of partial electron localization in SL. Electron capture by localized states le…

Weak itinerant ferromagnetism and electronic and crystal structures of alkali-metal iron antimonides: NaFe4Sb12andKFe4Sb12

2004

The synthesis, chemical, structural, and magnetic properties of alkali-metal compounds with filled-skutterudite structure, $\mathrm{Na}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{12}$ and $\mathrm{K}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{12}$, are described. X-ray and neutron diffraction and elemental analysis established the crystal structure without defects and disorder on the cation site. The temperature and pressure dependence of the cubic unit cell of $\mathrm{Na}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{12}$ and the displacement parameter of Na are investigated. The electronic structure is calculated by density functional methods (LMTO, FPLO). Quantum chemical calculations (electron localization function) reveal …

Stochastic Analysis of a Nonlocal Fractional Viscoelastic Bar Forced by Gaussian White Noise

2017

Recently, a displacement-based nonlocal bar model has been developed. The model is based on the assumption that nonlocal forces can be modeled as viscoelastic (VE) long-range interactions mutually exerted by nonadjacent bar segments due to their relative motion; the classical local stress resultants are also present in the model. A finite element (FE) formulation with closed-form expressions of the elastic and viscoelastic matrices has also been obtained. Specifically, Caputo's fractional derivative has been used in order to model viscoelastic long-range interaction. The static and quasi-static response has been already investigated. This work investigates the stochastic response of the non…

Manifestation of the halo structure in momentum distributions from 6He fragmentation

1998

Abstract Experimental data on the momentum distribution in the fragmentation of a 240 MeV/u 6 He beam on a carbon target are compared with several models of the 6 He nucleus based on different physical assumptions. It is shown that the lack of a strict theoretical description of the fragmentation mechanism and, in particular, of the final state interaction prevents any contra or versa arguments for these models. The requirement of fragment ( 5 He) survival or spatial localization of a fragment in the 6 He wave function is an essential point in the reaction mechanism. The analysis of the 5 He momentum (sum of the neutron and the α-particle momenta) distribution is free from the effect of fin…

Readout of quantum information spreading using a disordered quantum walk

2021

We design a quantum probing protocol using quantum walks to investigate the quantum information spreading pattern. We employ quantum Fisher information as a figure of merit to quantify extractable information about an unknown parameter encoded within the quantum walk evolution. Although the approach is universal, we focus on the coherent static and dynamic disorder to investigate anomalous and classical transport as well as Anderson localization. We provide a feasible experimental strategy to implement, in principle, the quantum probing protocol based on the quantum Fisher information using a Mach–Zehnder-like interferometric setup. Our results show that a quantum walk can be considered as …

Infra-Red Asymptotic Dynamics of Gauge Invariant Charged Fields: QED versus QCD

1999

The freedom one has in constructing locally gauge invariant charged fields in gauge theories is analyzed in full detail and exploited to construct, in QED, an electron field whose two-point function W(p), up to the fourth order in the coupling constant, is normalized with on-shell normalization conditions and is, nonetheless, infra-red finite; as a consequence the radiative corrections vanish on the mass shell $p^2=\mu^2$ and the free field singularity is dominant, although, in contrast to quantum field theories with mass gap, the eigenvalue $\mu^2$ of the mass operator is not isolated. The same construction, carried out for the quark in QCD, is not sufficient for cancellation of infra-red …

Local reinforcement effect of embedded strain gauges

2010

The reinforcement effect of strain gauges installed on low Young's modulus materials has received attention by many researchers with respect to both strain gauges installed on the surface [1,2] and embedded inside the material [3,4]. In the case of strain gauges installed on the surface, the evaluation of the local reinforcement effect gives [5] the following correction coefficient C, i.e. the ratio between the actual strain (without the strain gauge) and the strain ' measured by the strain gauge: * ' 1 sg s E C E (1) being * sg g , sg sg sg sg sg sg t L L E E L t t (2) where Esg is the Young’s modulus of the strain gauge, * Esg is a characteristic of the strain gauge which gives the strain…
